>> it certainly has been nationwide. in minneapolis there are still massive crowds in the street. the reaction has been peaceful. there have been smiles but there have also been tears. as a go to this video right now, this is what the reaction looked like the woman in the pink shirt is george floyd's sister. her emotions a speak for themselves as you watch this video. this doesn't bring george floyd back but so many say this is a first step to justice. here is what george floyd's family members had to say. >> i can sleep in peace now. is back with my grandma again. that is all we ever wanted. justice for my uncmy uncmy uncmc i was glad to see him walking out of the courtroom in handcuffs like my brother was handcuffed. is not in control anymore. we can't ever get him back. we can never get him back.

accountability following george úfloyd's murder. julian joins us live with what they have been saying today. >> get evening. really a fluttering almost fleeting sense of relief coming from the people i speaking with this evening. i believe that the jury returned a guilty verdict against the former officer derek chauvin. then, the reality sets in that there is so much work that still needs to be done and happened to make sure similar acts of police brutality don't continue to happen in the future. again, i spent the afternoon with so many people led the demonstrations across the bay area last summer demanding police accountability and reform. cat works of the justice teams network and the cofounder of the anti-police terror project has been pushing for 50% of oakland police officers budget to be reinvested in social services for more than 5 years. she credits floyd's killing any protest that followed for creating the momentum that led

to that fight by creating the macro program. the task force to reimagine policing in oakland. here is her reaction to the verdict and what is to come. >> even if just for a second we never get to breathe. we never get to stop. we never get to exhale. i am happy.am happy.am happy.am. i also want people to be clear. we have not solved white supremacy or anti-blackness in this country with this one conviction. we still have work to do. >> from the veteran a 19-year-old ucla student and activist, xavier brown who along with his childhood friend organized one of the largest protests for george floyd last year with 15,000 marching throughout oakland last summer. it is a sense of relief from him. >> floyd was able to get justice that his family was able to get some sort of closure from that horrible horrific tragedy.

we want to continue our position about today's guilty verdict in the derek chauvin trial with nikki jones, a professor studies at uc, berkeley. >> professor thank you for joining us. you have written extensively about what happens to george floyd. i would like to start with your personal reaction to today's verdict? did you expect when came down from the jury? >> my first reaction in my thoughts they went out to george floyd and those who love him and cared for him. my hope was that for them it th felt like some form of justice and some peace that they could gather from the process and some amount of closure to the extent that it could be gained. i did expect a guilty verdict. i think the prosecution put on a very strong case.

at the same time i am very aware of the history. even though it looks like it can be a very strong case there is always the possibility that the verdict that one expects is not the verdict that is delivered. we have seen that time after time. think what we see right now is a sense of relief for many people. it is a release and a collective release of breath. again it is just a reminder of how often justice has been denied to black peopleblack peoe black people who are victimized and killed by the police. >> professor, well said. let's talk about the release and relief that is in this moment a pullback look of the big picture. do you think this verdict will have a lasting impact on the relationship between police and citizens especially of course people of color? >> i think it will have an impact. when we think about policing and what policing is it is a combination of extraorinary violence and ordinary

dominance. i think what we saw in this case is a rebuke of the extraordinary violence that was on display in derek chauvin's actions. you saw that the police officer after police officer getting on the stand and condemning his actions and his behavior. challenge that is it leaves a whole universe of ordinary dominance and routine aggression and violence that doesn't quite cross that line in part because the line is so far out there. i think the work that remains is revealing uncovering challenging the ordinary dominance that people are responding to and people protesting against when they are out in the streets. it is the extraordinary violence in the violence that goes viral. it is also the daily the aggregation that people who are the frequent targets of policing and live in high surveillance neighborhoods are exposed to each day that is a big part of the problem. >> it really is. professor what is the number one thing -- going forward that you hope to see? the number one change following today's historic verdict?

soon i think the following the killing of george floyd were a rupture. it created a space for abolition and conversation and it is about abolition and abolitionist imagining and to emerge and elevate to really be amplified. i hope people continue along the path that they are not afraid of transformation and that they push past the comfort of reformist narrative and reformist agendas and continue with the momentum. keep the wind at our backs when it comes to transforming not a system but what it means to guarantee and deliver an experienced safety in our communities particularly these of the police. >> embrace change. keep pushing forward. professor nikki jones, thank you for talking with us

we appreciate the insight you have been able to give us on what transpired today which again was so historic. thank you. >> thank you. >> let's move on and turn out to our efforts to build a better bay area and protect our health in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. california has set a new record low for the test positivity rate of 1.3%. it has been dropping steadily recently. 5 counties move from the red to the orange tier where there are fewer restrictions. none of those counties are actually in the bay area. marin county was optimistic about becoming the first bay area county to reach yellow tier but a recent spike in cases, attributed to spring break travel has kept it in the orange tier. by the end of the week we may find out how much longer the pols on the johnson & johnson vaccine will last. all injections are on hold for an investigation into rare blood clots. luz pena is a member of our

vaccine team and she has been looking into this and is joining us live after speaking with medical professionals about what new findings european medical agencies remain as we move forward. >> over 7 million people have been vaccinated with the johnson & johnson vaccine in the u.s. so far. doctors are hoping this explanation will help regain the public's trust and reduce vaccine hesitancy moving forward. >> it is the possible link the medical doctors say could help understand what happened to the 6 women who developed blood clots with the johnson & johnson vaccine. the european medicines agency points to an immune response. >> the current hypothesis as it may be an autoimmune response that caused the platelets to clump together. >> dr. philip grant wasgrant was principal investigator at the johnson & johnson trials out of stanford. he believes these findings show all rare blood clots can occur even without the vaccine. >> it happens one out of

100,000 people per year. it is more often in women than in men. >> the european agency took into account the data from the u.s. cases. ucsf starter malcolm john says those cases could lead to an explanation but they need to be investigated closely. >> it is causing platelets to be removed from the body and platelets to become activated and that is what causes the clotting. >> dr. john lennon effort to vaccinate the black community in san francisco. in 3-4 weeks, over 500 people were vaccinated with the shot and no reports of blood clots have been flagged. >> we have not heard of any clotting competitions with any of the patients that have been in our clinics. >> he says there is still a slight risk during the first two weeks of the vaccination but says the benefits outweigh the risks.

what a day it has been with a shelter verdict coming down today. >> the entire trial was fascinating to watch. spencer, you watched it closely as well. the word that comes to so many minds today, mine included i would be curious about years is relief. >> that is exactly what i felt with the verdict. it was a verdict i sort of expected with the evidence that was presented by the prosecution. of course, you never know what goes on in the minds of jurors. just a sense of relief.

this point. just a lot of people gathered. reena roy shows us what it took to get to today's verdict. >> after 10 1/2 hours of deliberation the jury has come to a verdict in the murder trial. >> with the jurythe jurythe jury one unintentional and second- degree murder while committing a felony find the defendant guilty. >> convicted on all three charges. showed no emotion as he was cuffed and taken back into custody. >> for a high profile case, this is a pretty fast verdict. when the world is watching the jurors typically want to cross their tees and stop their eyes and make it clear to that they very carefully considered the evidence. >> monday jurors heard six hours of closing arguments from both sides after nearly 3 weeks of powerful testimony and supporting evidence. prosecutors argued chauvin's action killed floyd. the defense hoping to create reasonable doubt seeing his use of force was justified blaming

floyd dragon heart issues for his death. >> mr. chauvin should be found not guilty of all counts. >> what the defendant did to george floyd, killed him. >> the diverse ranging from 20s to 60s 5 men and 7 women. 4 black, 6 white and to self identify as multiracial. >> when there are no questions, when there are no clarifications asked by a jury for jury instructions, when you have nothing to read from the jury a fast verdict like this indicates there is a full agreement. >> security here in minneapolis is stepped up with national guard members deployed and scattered throughout the city. security is also pretty tied in several major cities including new york and washington, d.c.

derek chauvin is among a small group of officers who have been arrested for using chokehold's. he is wind of 25 police arrested for crimes in which an officer choked someone or restrained them by the neck. 143 police officers have been arrested nationwide for use of force over the past 16 years. of those cases 73 resulted in a criminal conviction including that of chauvin. experts say cases against police are tough to prove. >> these charges are rare. convictions are rare. jurors don't like to convict police officers. they would like to thank the people serving them and they would like to think they are protecting them. it is a very difficult case to another prosecution deserves the credit for that. there are reform movements legislatively pending on the federal and state side that should make cases like this easier to prove. i think this case will encourage the reform movements that are already going on. this is not typical

of a process but this is sort of a beginning. >> the guilty verdict is also giving others that it may be a possible sign of change for the better in our nation's legal system. >> this is something i never thought would happen in my lifetime. look at where we are. someone who is a police officer being held accountable for murder. we are moving in the right direction but we want to prevent these things from happening in the first place. it is time for us to continue to fight and to stay hopeful because a better future is just really within our hands. >> earlier on abc seven news at 4:00 we spoke with dr. jan trant, a professor of ethnic studies at cal state university east bay about what the verdict means for communities that have been victims of police violenc before. >> i am left with the words enough and not enough. our communities experiencing enough whether or not we are directly impacted that we have

if you looked in the skies of palo alto this afternoon you probably got quite a surprise. family had a brand-new living unit delivered by a 500 ton crane right into their backyard. destine dorsey had a front row seat as the house was installed for the family. >> i think it is really cool because the house was flying so high. >> what did it look like? we will kind of like a fine house. >> we are installingare installg

palo alto. >> it was built off-site using a factory built process. with take care of the foundation and utility connections. >> we have a big family so we are doing this. we have 8 schedule we want to have a home for the kids to start to visit when they come home from college. we want to have space for relative relatives when they come over and visit. our house isn't big enough for all of that. >> and moved into the backyard lowered it downit downit downitn and donna jiffy. we have made it easy. there was a lot of background to make one of these projects work that we built a process that is very easy and approachable for homeowners across the state of california. by nature finishing the building before it arrives we need a big machine to lift the building in the back of the garage. reg using a 500 ton crane which is pretty large but it is particularly heavy unit and a piece of equipment we need to get done today. it is the fastest way to add livable space to your home without having to open up the walls of your existing home. >> this is a pretty quick swing. the neighbors have come out in full force to give it a watch.
