at how many doses have been paused in california and the timeline for when they will become available. stephanie sierra, abc7 abc7 abc >> thank you very much. the bay area's largest county is making tremendous progress in the effort to vaccinate residents. úsanta clara county has agreed to administer 1 million doses, but there is still a lot of work to do. chris wynn has the story. >> reporter: in santa clara county this afternoon, a major milestone has been reached in the fight against covid-19. >> all the folks who have been working to get folks vaccinated, a very sincere thank you, to all of you who got vaccinated, a very sincere thank you. >> reporter: as of today, 1 million residents have received at least one dose of a vaccine, that is more than 60% of residents 16 and older who are eligible. >> we are celebrating, today, that we still have a ways to go. >> reporter: nearly a third of the eligible population have been vaccinated. despite the news, officials are

among them, 93% say they want to continue to use contactless payments. we've gotten used to that. 83% will continue to shop via social media. 64% still plan to use curbside pickup. 59% still plans for video appointment. i spoke with denise dresser about the survey and getting back to normal. >> denise, it's great to see you. how are you doing? >> i'm good. thanks for having me. >> it's great to be on with you. i want to hear about how you've been doing with salesforce, the massive tower liketower liketowe other office buildings has been empty for the most part of the year, but things are beginning to change. >> things are beginninhome for 22 years. we are looking forward to welcoming employees back when it is safe and when we follow government and health regulations. we are excited about reopening, for sure. >> a lot of people are. they are getting the mental adjustment and emotional adjustment to some sense of

normalcy. but you have recently conducted a fascinating survey about what people can expect. give us a sense of what you found. what surprised you? >> here is something that did not surprise me. you are probably in the same boat. we are all anxious to get back to life and see people and have in person experiences. what we did find interesting is that consumers have been getting to digital experiences, shopping online, picking something up at the curbside, i have two kids, and i love to do video dr. appointments. i don't have to drive them here and there. those are things people don't want to give up. i think that will be interesting as we reopen. we will have digital and experiences. >> something we have learned to do, for example, contactless purchases, you think will stay with us.

>> i do, absolutely, and what's exciting about that, because people loved it, right? we really got used to it. companies adopted. the exciting opportunity is, that will be the way of the future. for companies across every industry, and that's what i love about cell force, is connecting people to customers, as this is a new way to differentiate how you provide an experience to a customer either contactless or in person. so it's going to be an exciting time. >> what do you think is going to be the biggest challenge for most experiences as they resume normal operations in terms of how they reenact -- with their customers? >> places like amusement parks, museums or office buildings, they have been closed. first of all, they will see a surge in field service getting ready for a new experience in the physical building again, right? the other thing that will be different is, inc. about us, if we are going to a hotel or traveling, we will have a lot more questions, is there room service?

can i rent equipment, can i go to the spa, can i work out? those in the moment experiences will happen more upfront during, or even after. being able to meet consumers where they are give you a good experience. they will have in the moment questions. >> people are looking forward to getting back into stores, restaurants, back on airplanes, getting back to traveling hotels, change. how will that stay the same in terms of what we experienced the last year? >> it will be a slow and gradual experience where people are going to be really careful about where they're going. they will have questions in advance before they go. companies will need to be prepared for that, how they answer the questions we may have as we go. and they are going to want to have the option to be in person or digital. so it will constantly be this evolving experience, and a

really deep personal relationship with your customers. any channel they are at, and they want to continue at.contin. >> it will be a fascinating time. >> i'm excited. >> great to be with you. >> thanks. another interesting finding from the company's survey, 96% of consumers in question plan to shop inside a store by the end of this year. we are all sort of feeling our way through this new reality is we are just out of the pandemic. >> retailers should like the sound of that, right? i'm wondering if you will like the results of the reagan forecast. we have been waiting for >> we have, we have, it's like waiting for gadot. he's here, but only staying a little while. let's take a look at conditions. we have gusts ranging from 25 to 30 miles per hour or higher near novato to san francisco. let's take a look at current

temperature readings as we look across the embarcadero. it is 59 in oakland, with 60s in mountain view, 59 in morgan hill and 52 in half moon bay. we are seeing some blue sky and clouds. we have readings in the 60s, 72 at fairfield, andfairfield, andi concorde and livermore, so is quite a few degrees milder than it was, yesterday, in most locations. we are looking out on the bay and the city of san francisco, it is cloudy and much cooler, tomorrow. north bay rain will move through the area on sunday. it will taper off and end on monday with a warmer week coming up. here is the information for overnight. we will see high clouds and low clouds and patches of moisture tomorrow morning near the coastline. it could produce an isolated shower or two. the main rain won't be until sunday. overnight lows are in the upper

40s. we have mid-50s at the coast to low or mid 60s near the bay shoreline and the mid to upper 60s inland. the approaching storm has light intensity producing light rain and scattered showers on monday, here's the forecast animation starting tomorrow morning, notice not much will happen in the way of precipitation, but early sunday morning, a wave of rain starts to swing through.ing through.in. sunday night, we will have leftover showers or periods of light rain on monday. it should be over by monday evening. rainfall totals by monday evening will be generally a 10th of an inch to mainch to an inch in the wettest locations, perhaps more in the higher elevations and maybe less in some of the locations.

with my wildfire season looming after a dry winter, a new study by bay area researchers is learning about the dangers from smoke, but not just to lungs or eyes. >> reporter: smoke from the recent wildfires in northern california has forced thousands of people to shelter in their homes, turning to masks or filters to avoid breathing in smoky air, but now researchers have uncovered another layer of concern, our skin. >> ours is the first study that connects wildfire air pollution with adverse skin effects. also, in a very short period of exposure of just a few days.

>> reporter: she sampled a two- week period of time of time 2018 campfire. she says the change in air quality 175 miles away in san francisco was so significant that it forced people with sensitive skin conditions to seek treatment. >> during that two week period of time, we measured a 50% increase in pediatric visits for dermatitis, and a 50% increase in visits with adults. >> reporter: she says chemicals in the smoke cacacacaca outer barrier of the skin and penetrate the cells. common symptoms include swelling and itching. the number of patients without pre-existing conditions increased, along with anti- inflammatory medicines like steroids. >> this is a serious symptom we are seeing. >> reporter: rheumatologists reinforce the critical importance of sunscreen to

abc7 news continues to lead the charge on exposing discrimination in the real estate appraisal process. countless families have reached out to the race and social justice reporter with stories of racially biased appraisals and how they managed to beat the system. julian is live with how it paid off for one family to push back. >> reporter: good afternoon, christine. they did push back. that has been the common thread in all four of these stories of appraisal discrimination that families across the area have shared with me so far. in this case, the pip -- family saw it coming, the wife investigates discrimination for a living. >> how could the other appraisal be so off? we are not off. she is off. how could she be so off, is my question. >> reporter: stephanie and her

husband knew something was off after an appraisal on their home came in at $750,000 flat. she had a hunch something was up because she had seen my ongoing coverage of racially biased appraisals across the bay area. one family infamily infamily inn another family in east oakland. she also realized something wasn't right because she got an appraisal on the home just two months earlier. >> with their appraisal, i knew we were still good. it was 849,000. > reporter: after receiving the $849,000 appraisal from another lender in january, they felt confident they could find better rates elsewhere. that's when they found loan depot, they ordered an appraisal. >> again, i'm not worried or concerned. we've already had one done. she takes the pictures. when i get the appraisal back, she gets me an appraisal for $750,000. >> reporter: your initial reaction? >> was shocked. i'm like how -- she missed a whole hundred thousand dollars.

>> reporter: that's when barnes reached out to me. i suggested is called for a reconsideration of value, and file a complaint. the family was left waiting for reconsideration, feeling wronged solely based on the cover of their skin. >> she came to the neighborhood. she has an idea what the neighborhood is supposed to be. she came to the house and saw who the residence was, and she had an idea of what the value of the home should be. >> reporter: after two weeks, they sent an updated appraisal, the same appraiser adjusted the value, which is standard in a reconsideration, to $820,000. it was a $70,000 difference. the appraised value went up, but so did thththththth >> okay, i'm going to take the knife out, but i'll twisted on the way out, you know?

so the 820, it was better, but it was still not enough to meet the 70%. i am at 72%. >> reporter: she is referring >> reporter: she is referring to the loan to the home compared to the mortgage, with appraisal coming in lower than expected, that means more fees to close the deal. she is fighting the fees but tells me she plans to go with this lender because the rates have gone up. a small victory in a battle that shouldn't have happened in the first place. >> we are just tired. we know we have been redlined. we know we have been relegated to neighborhoods. we know we have been discriminated against. and we have accepted it for a long time. we are not accepting it anymore. >> there are avenues like channel 7 that can help them navigate through these murky waters sometimes. >> reporter: and we are here to help people navigate these troubling situations that can often just be so upsetting. this is the fourth family story of appraisal discrimination
