stars will arrive for the 93rd oscars airing right here on abc7. this will feature something absent from all of the awards, which is a red carpet. attendance is limited with 170 people allowed inside. and of course, there are strict covid restrictions. abc news reporter jade hernandez is live with more on what's a historic night. a record number of women and people of color up for the nomination. good morning, jade. looking beautiful this morning. >> reporter: thank you. good morning, liz. to inject a smaller oscar ceremony with enough glitz and glam, there's a special offering for tonight's event. the red carpet is ready for the academy acards. things will look very different. gone will be the crowds and press. only nominees, their guests, and presenters will be attending. the oscars' covid safety

precautions taking cues from a feature film two of the somehows producers worked on. >> three of the leading open deemoologists in the world that worked with us, they are working with us to make sure that we can keep everyone who is papering saef. >> reporter: the academy changed the rules for eligibility with movie theaters closed during the pandemic. studios opted to offer knewly released films for at home streaming. >> how do you put the genie back in the bottle when this is over? i think there is an appetite for hollywood to find a solution where streamers and the theaters can coexist. >> reporter: netflix leading all studios going into the award show with 35 nominations, including ten for "mank." the film about the screen writer is up for best picture against a diverse mix of seven other

films. . >> i think a lot of these films share this social justice, you know, flavor that it feels contemporary, even though all of these films are period pieces. >> reporter: and for the first time, there were two women competing in the best director category. one sent this after her win at the bafta wards. >> if this means more people like me get to live their dreams, i am very grateful. >> reporter: and also speaking out at the bafta awards. >> i just feel so proud of everyone who worked on the film. . >> reporter: tonight's ceremony will take place in two locations, union station in los angeles and right here at dolby theater in hollywood. another change, performances of the nominated songs will air

earn annouhe state will resume administering the johnson & johnson vaccine. a review panel of four western states support lifting the temporary pause on the vaccine. the review found that it was safe and effective for use after the cdc and fda's decision to resume use on friday. governor newsome, who received the johnson & johnson shot, said the state will resume use immediately. and counties are ready to resume giving it with a few changes. even so, some people are still feeling wary. >> reporter: the administration of johnson & johnson's covid-19 vaccine can resume immediately. johnson & johnson vaccine is back after an 11-day pause. the fda and cdc saying the benefits for the vaccine outweigh the risks. >> we're confident the covid-19 vaccine meets the robust

standards for safety, effectiveness, and quality for a medical product that is used widely. >> reporter: this after a cdc committee voted to lift the cause but recommended a label noted with the risk of blood clots. there's been 15 cases, including three degs, all women. that's out of 8 million people. . >> contra costa county will start using the johnson & johnson vaccine on monday. >> reporter: people getting vaccinated will have a choice. >> you will have an alternative of the pfizer or moderna. >> reporter: that's because the county has a surplus of vaccines and the public may be reluctant. and this clinic will offer j&j. >> i would get it. it's one and i don't have to come back. >> reporter: the city of berkley will aline with other counties and resume the use of

covid vaccination. geing their second shot. j.r. stone found the problem is with the syringes and needles in this story only on 7. >> sat down, rolled up my sleeve. she put the needle in and said, oh, after the plunging part of the syringe. and i said, okay, this isn't good, in my mind. >> reporter: michelle is describing the moment she got her second dose of the covid-19 pfizer vaccine at santa rosa's junior college. >> only a little bit got in. most of it stayed in. . >> reporter: those from petaluma health center in charge of the doses said that four individuals dealt with the

leakage and need another dose. the chief medical officer said human error is not to blame, rather the syringes and needles supplied by the feds. going on to say the retractable needles were the problem and once they identified the issue, 100 needles were taken out of use and replaced with different ones. as for michelle, she had side effects like chills and a fever a day after the dose. and now doesn't know what to expect the third time. but she's happy she's opted to get the vaccine. >> to see my family, my friends. i want to go to dinner. i want to sit in a movie house again. just not right now until i get my now third shot. i want to do that. if i don't get vaccinated, i won't feel comfortable going and sitting with people who i love and care about it. >> reporter: michelle is scheduled for another shot this upcoming thursday action a week from the last one she had. there are still questions about whether this time line complies

in and around 50 degrees. 52 in pal at and concord. and 53 in san jose and freemont. there's the s.a. p. center. we're dry now. the rain develops by 8:00, maybe a little bit earlier in the north bay. wet and breezy today. by the afternoon, the front will be pushing through the south bay. and we'll see the rain showers ending. a chilly start to the workweek. maybe an isolated shower. the numbers warm up. today, light to moderate rain. a slight chance of a thunderstorm north and east bay valleys, higher elevations, in the afternoon. and looking at anywhere from a tenth to a half inch of rain. that half inch comes with the enhanced upper lift in the hills. g together. at 9:30, we have rai in t north bay. it pushes across the east bay. showers throughout half moon bay. the peninsula, 1:00.

party and perceived misses on the handling of the economy and immigration at the border. only ford and trump have had lower ratings 100 days in. and it comes as president biden makes history, becoming the first president in office to label the massacre of hundreds of thousands of armenians in world war i as genocide. and governor newsome did the same yesterday. ce kardashians honored those killed. in san francisco, hundreds gathered and laid flowers. starting in 1915, 1.5 million were massacred or deported from the empire, which is now turkey. up until the historic statement, pastsint avoided using the word "genocide." the turkish government said it

about the historic day in their public schools. all day, we are getting you ready for the 93rd on yule oscars airing on abc7. it will feature an overlooked chapter in the history of the disability rights movement. two producer directors from oakland nominated for the document called "crip camp." it featured how a bay area played a pivotal role. david digs into the archives to expand on the documentary. >> reporter: the documentary captured the summer of 1971 at camp jeanette in new york, a special place where young people with disabilitied could be themselveses. these are the words of a former camper.

jim was 15 years old then. he was born with spina bifida. he was given a camera to capture their experiences. that was a half century ago, but it put in perspective the disability movement. they spent six years working on the documentary. >> we could use the camp to shift the perception of disability and tell one of the great unknown and unsung civil rightses stories of the time was intriguing to me. >> reporter: in the five hours of unedited film, the campers discovered common bonds and a desire to remove barriers on the path to independence. >> there was the antiwar movement, the civil rights movement, the woman's movement. and gay rights movement. looking around and saying, you know, we need one for ourself. >> reporter: judy had been a camper and returned as a

counselor that summer. >> we felt that we needed to come together in order to really express a new vision. and that we were going to be the leaders of that vision. . >> reporter: the bay area became ground zero where the center for independent living for pioneering efforts for self-determination. progressive policies to support disabled students apply uc berkley opened long-closed doors. in 1977, i covered judy and others from the camp occupying the san francisco office of the u.s. department of health, education, and welfare over inaction to sign regulation 504 to bar discrimination of the disabled. the 28-day sit in posed great risks for the participants. >> not having a backup ventilator. not having your usual person care attendant. not having access to catheters.
