a new poll shows californians like the job governor newsome is doing when it comes to public education during the pandemic. the public policy institute of california survey showed 52% approved of the handling of the k-12 education system. there is change compared to how they think it's are doing right now. overwhelmingly, 80% say the children are falling behind. a few minutes ago i spoke about this. he is the associate survey director and research fellow at the public policy institute of california. >> it is great to be with you. thank you for coming on. >> tell me a little bit about this study. fascinating results that a significant percentage feel governor newsome is doing a good job in his handling k-12. when you ask people specifically about how their kids are doing you get a different response.

>> we do find overall there is really good approval ratings currently for the governor. 57%. similar numbers of the handling of the reopening process as well. it is an important component. we do find feel children are falling behind during the pandemic. that includes 64% who are saying they are falling behind a lot. that is a really important part of this. it is noteworthy that despite those feelings that the children are falling behind, most say that system is on the right track. >> generally speaking? >> yes. >> how do they fail when it comes to coming out of the pandemic? do they feel their students are behind as a result of virtual learning the last year and a half? >> we do find a large share nearly 2 in 3 are falling behind. there is even greater concern for lower income students and

english language learner students. that is definitely a concern. we know those are issues with broadband connectivity in certain household which is driving some of this problems and concerns when it comes to distance or virtual learning. >> we find most californians and parents do kind of want schools to currently be partially reopen. and as well as a plurality they are saying the reopening process is going on at about the right pace. there is some synergy with what is happening but there are some divides with a large divide when it comes to a partisan divide with many more republicans saying they want to
