>> vaccines should be available later this year. we spoke with families that are anxious to get their younger teenagers vaccinated. we'll have that story as we continue, but like so many parents, rashawn murray has been waiting and we'll continue to keep you updated on that story. stay with us. moving on now, we have a new development, san francisco and marin counties could advance into the less restrictive yellow tier next week which means an increased capacity up to 50% for places like gyms, movie theaters and entertainment centers, but the biggest change will be bars not serving food will be allowed to reopen indoors status would also allow live performance venues to increase their capacity. it is official. the 49ers selected their quarterback of the future, trey

lance. the 49ers traded up from 12th to the third overall pick and had a lot of people fooled with their intentions. >> yeah, absolutely. abc7 news sports director larry beil has more on lance and what this means for jimmy g. >> well do, not play poker with 49ers coach kyle shanahan. he bluffed everybody for weeks when most of us thought the 9ers were going to take mac jones of alabama with the third overall pick. instead the choice of trey lance out of north dakota state, an elite level athlete, size and speed, but he played against lesser competition in college. the 9ers kept the secret when they knew lance was their guy. >> we've been very high on trey since the beginning, since day one and yes, the person everyone else is speculating about, we liked him, too. >> we've been convicted and excited for a long, long time. so we went right back to where we've been and that's really excited about adding trey lance

to the 49ers and we're thrilled about that. >> just excited and i know this coaching staff and the guys in the quarterback room are going to push me and help me compete and help me learn. so that's the biggest thing. i'm just looking forward to it. >> lance is a project. he's going to need time to learn which probably means jimmy garoppolo will start the upcoming season for the 49ers, much more coming up in sports. >> larry, thanks very much. tonight was a huge night for bay area native najee harris. the alabama running back has been drafted by the pittsburgh steelers. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone was in emeryville where there was really quite a celebration. >> reporter: alabama running back and former antioch high school football star najee harris drafted in the first round of the 2021 nfl draft. >> the pittsburgh steelers select najee harris. >> reporter: we were there as najee was surrounded by family

and friends in emeryville. in fact, at one point it was so busy that he took the call he got from the steelers outside. >> appreciate everything, coach. >> reporter: what many don't realize is harris grew up in numerous places, antioch, oakland and in 2010 when he was just 12 years old he spent time living in this richmond shelter. >> it's all god's plan. my roots will always be in the bay area. >> reporter: a humble harris was interrupted by champagne showers during our interview. one for the memory books. >> just all the little kids out there that's going through the same stuff, i'm going to tell them there is people in your same position and there is light at the end of the tunnel. >> reporter: we asked the future pittsburgh steeler if he was nervous as the clock kept on ticking without a call. >> i was getting hella nervous, yeah. just every time you see the trades happening and others picked in the first round, it's kind of scary, but finally it happened. it all worked out how it was

planned. >> you're leaving tomorrow? >> that's what they said. >> reporter: what a night it was here in emeryville and as for what comes next for najee, i'm told he's headed out of town on an airplane headed towards pittsburgh on friday morning. j.r. stone, abc7 news. let's go back to our top story tonight. it's the question on so many parents' minds. when will the covid vaccines be ready for young teenagers and children? >> that's right. abc7 news reporter kate larson is part of our vaccine team and spoke to families who are anxious to get their younger teens vaccinated. >> give her the vaccine. they said no. i said okay, we'll wait. >> reporter: like so many parents roshawn murray has been waiting. >> she is asthmatic and i wanted her vaccinate the since day one. >> reporter: sixth grader kyvay robinson has never set foot inside her middle school.

right now the vaccine is authorized for people 16 and older. she's in the next group of kids ages 12 to 15 who could get vaccinated. >> at first i didn't want to get, but if me getting it means i'll be able to go back to school and play sports and do things that i like, i'll get it. >> reporter: san francisco's department of public health tells me operationally they're preparing to vaccinate the 12 to 15-year-old group. all that need to happen is the actual authorization from the fda. >> the safety signals are really good and we anticipate that they won't be different for children. >> reporter: stanford's dr. maldonado is chair of the committee on infectious diseases for the american academy of pediatrics. will the dosing regimen be any different for children than adults? >> that's what we're investigating now. we don't know the answer. >> reporter: dr. maldonado expects those answers and the impact of the vaccine on children to materialize soon. >> even before school it's going to make a big difference this summer. people want to get out and

vacation. >> reporter: pfizer announced at the end of may they'll introduce 25 vial packs of their vaccine which is eight times smaller than their current 195 vial pack size. the smaller packs are more manageable for doctors' offices like pediatric practices that don't need massive quantities of vaccine. the hope is that families will feel comfortable getting the vaccine from their own doctor. murray works for the rafiqqi coalition for health and wellness and counsels vaccine hesitant people. >> bringing it closer to home and having people of color and people that care, they can talk to you and educate you and walk you through it is a big help. >> reporter: in san francisco, kate larson, abc7 news. to the east bay now, firefighters have extinguished a vegetation fire that burned today in pittsburg, broke out around 4:00 this afternoon burned near homes south of buchanon road. some appeared to have yard damage. contra costa fire officials say

t's a good reminder to the fire's cause has not been determined. today's early season wildfire is a stark reminder of what's to come. to prepare, newly established fire hand crews are getting specialized training now in the south bay. abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo introduces us to task force rattlesnake. >> reporter: mitigating imminent fire threats and performing hazardous fuels reduction, a tall order for these newly established hand crews busy with specialized training in san jose. calfire in cooperation with the california national guard formed task force rattlesnake, clara is unit taking on two. >> we haven't had established hand crews in the past. with this entity and being able to have these two fire crews it's going to be a huge asset for the surrounding communities and the santa clara unit itself. >> reporter: the battalion chief spoke with us outside the south bay headquarters at the

california national guard armory. he says together the teams consist of four calfire captains, eight seasonal firefighters and 48 guards members. >> we have helicopter pilots, mechanics, police officers. so it's all new to them. >> reporter: new and nevertheless crucial as california faces dry conditions and drought, significant fire potential also in the forecast. >> i think every year that i've been around i've always said oh, that was the busiest year i've been part of, but we've been saying that more and more. >> reporter: the calfire santa clara unit or scu battled the scu lightning complex which ignited last august. the fire was active for 44 days torching 500,000 acres. >> it definitely brought challenges and also opened our eyes up for the need in the unit. >> reporter: these men and women training monday through friday, battalion chief calling every day a small victory working to get ahead of the

wildfire season. in san jose, i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. a $1 million grant will hope low income and special needs sidents of the berryessa estates community in napa county prepare for fire season. the grant from calfire will cover the costs of creating defensible space for homeowners who need help protecting their properties. the berryessa estate neighborhood has seen several destructive wildfires affect the area in the past few years. a troubling image tonight, many parts of the bay area are in extreme drought highlighted in red. for a closer look at what this means, let's check in with abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. >> it does not mean a very good fire season ahead. i want to explain in a moment. first let's look at the drought monitor. when you see the entire state is in a drought, extreme drought shaded in red, 53% of california. you look at the bay area and much of northern and eastern and parts of the san francisco

police and the highway patrol are investigating a shooting tonight that resulted in a collision along an east bay freeway off ramp around 9 p.m. at the railroad avenue off ramp to westbound highway 4 in pittsburg. the shooting victim crashed into one of the two hoppers that were being hauled by a big rig. police have not released the victim's condition. developing news, the head of oakland's chinatown chamber of commerce says he was

attacked in the city's downtown today. you've likely seen carl chan on our news before. he's spoken out often on crimes in chinatown and against asians. he was walking near broadway and eighth street this afternoon he said when a man yelled a slur and pushed him to the ground. chan was only scraped up, thank goodness, but says it could have been much worse. >> in one way i have to say i got lucky, but i just don't want to see this happening over and over again, not only about me. i don't want to see it happening against any seniors. >> chan says he snapped a couple of photos of his attacker while he got away and was able to give police a description. police say they did not make an arrest, at least not yet. new details tonight about the alameda police officers placed on leave after mario gonzalez died during an arrest earlier this month. images from the department's facebook page snow officers cameron leahy and eric mckinley both hired in 2018 and are

currently on paid administrative leave. another officer, james fisher, as well as a civilian parking enforcement employee are also on leave. we do not have photos of those two. gonzalez's death is still under investigation. alameda city council has scheduled a meeting for may 8th to look at how police respond to mental health calls. another item about law enforcement tonight, new developments, a vacaville police officer caught on camera hitting his k-9 partner will no longer be a dog handler. this december encounter troubled a lot of people who saw it. we showed this to you on the news. the officer striking the police dog during a training session. vacaville's interim police chief says the officer is still with the force but has been reassigned away from the k-9 unit. the police dog has been returned to its vendor and is no longer on the force. california's small businesses will get more than $6 billion in tax breaks under legislation signed today by governor newsom. the governor visited with several small businesses in san

fernando valley earlier today, many of them devastated by the pandemic. the legislation will allow small businesses to write off expenses on state taxes. that's if those expenses were paid for with ppp loans that have since been forgiven. >> the stress, anxiety, the fear that so many people have had to struggle with over this last year, the pandemic-induced recession, the impact that's had on this economy and the impact that's had on small businesses. >> the bill could cost the state 6.2 billion over the next six years. california is seeing a one time budget surplus that might be as much as $15 billion. in the north bay as restaurants and wineries increase capacity, it appears they can't find enough staff. during the height of the pandemic a lot of people got laid off as you know and left the area because of the high cost of living. now you can find hundreds of job listings on local hiring websites. >> you used to get say 10 to 15 resumes, not all of them good. now you get none.

>> people can easily go from this shop to across the street for $1 more. they can go to another one for another dollar more. >> the napa wine train hopes to resume service by middle of may and it has more than 100 job openings. the south bay community is rallying to support the japanese art and cultural center in san jose. the nonprofit is struggling after it was forced to shut down during the pandemic. the center offers martial arts and language classes, but the managing director says the benefit to the community goes beyond that. >> there's a lot of i would say asian anxiety, asian hate or asian discrimination. we think this particular place is able to hope to foster a sense of community, a sense of learning of each other's culture. >> the managers hope to reopen the center this summer. their landlord is being

accommodating, but they owe back rent and would like to get ahead on the rest of the year. if you'd like to help, a gofundme has been created. i'm sure they would appreciate any help they can get. let's turn our attention to the weather as we get a little bit closer to the weekend, dan. >> we're almost there, aren't we? meteorologist sandhya patel is here. will it stay this warm? >> no, it will not. today the temperatures began to fall, especially near the coast and around the bay. tomorrow you'll notice inland areas start to feel that cooling breeze and the deepening marine layer as well. here's a live look from our emeryville camera as we look back towards san francisco. visibility is terrific now. the cooling will spread tomorrow. 88 was the high in concord today, tomorrow about 80. from 91 in gilroy to 82 tomorrow, 9 degrees cooler and you will notice that santa rosa will fall 6 degrees, so coming in at 76. i think it's still going to be in the comfort zone unless you're near the coast. this is what started coming in

as you look from our sutro tower camera earlier tonight over san francisco the fog starting to roll in and that started the cooling that is underway. it's going to continue heading into tomorrow. high pressure is starting to weaken a bit. an area of low pressure that is developing here is going to continue to head towards the pacific northwest, but what we'll get out of it is a few extra clouds. the cooling continues, some morning drizzle. here's live doppler 7 seeing those extra clouds now along with the fog down below and those temperatures anywhere from the 40s to the 50s, a few low 60s showing up there, but cooler than where we were yesterday. a lovely view of san francisco with morning fog and spotty drizzle, cooling tomorrow and a windy pattern going into the weekend. here's the hour-by-hour forecast. if you are commuting in the morning, be careful. at 5:00 you will see slippery roads. as we go into 8 a.m. especially near the coastline due to drizzle and the fog will be around with the higher clouds. at 11 a.m.

the marine layer retreats, but we'll have high clouds filtering the sunshine. morning temperatures 40s and 50s, cooler than this morning. you will definitely need the extra layer and for the afternoon hang onto that layer, especially near the coast where it will be windy and cool, mid- to upper 50s, right around the bay 60s, 70s and inland you'll see the warmest spots in low to mid-80s, 80 in concord, 75 san jose, 68 oakland, 58 in san francisco, 72 san rafael, 76 in santa rosa. those winds hour by hour you will notice it get gusty. this is typical for this time of year, 5:00 tomorrow evening over 30-mile an hour winds, but they ramp up more as we go into saturday, 40, 45-mile an hour winds. that will continue to drive those temperatures down as you look at the accuweather seven- day forecast on saturday and then a warming trend begins sunday pushing temperatures back up into the summer-like levels with 90s inland monday, tuesday, 60s coastside. tuesday, 60s coastside. >> thank you.
