hate and extremism has found that anti-asian hate crimes are up 140% in the first quarter of this year compared to last year. to the south bay now, a messaga call stop asian d hate this afternoon. organizers are calling on state lawmakers to take action against the rise in violence against asian americans. >> and we as a local community leaders need to let our legislators know we must be strict. there should be consequences for all these things happening, and people should be held responsible. >> organizers say it's their responsibility to stand in solidarity with all communities facing hate and discrimination. in the east bay there are plenty of opportunities to get vaccinated this weekend if you need to. abc news was at a clinic in

fremont. it will be open again tomorrow. appointments are recommended, but walk ins are welcome. organizers say people should have no trouble getting a shot right now. >> now that it's open to the general public, there's so much availability and access. they can go to their local pharmacies and get vaccines regularly. >> if you can't make it there this weekend, there are also clinics planned for next weekend. contra costa counties has some temporary walk up vaccine clinics this weekend. one is at the pittsburgh youth development center. the other at st. john missionary church in richmond. the sites are only eligible for county residents and are open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. through tomorrow, no appointment needed. and there's a new way to find out where to get the white house senior advisor

for covid response said you can text your zip code to a number and get a text of all the locations where you can get vaccinated. the number of people in the hospital with covid has hit an all time low in california, down from a high in january of nearly 23,000 to 1,681 yesterday. the state reports nearly 40% of people in california are now fully vaccinated, and two vaccination sites in san rafael are closing due to lack of demand. the sites at the county fairgrounds and in the canal neighborhood are open through today for those getting their fist shot, and through may 29th for the second dose. starting today, everyone 16 and older can get vaccinated at berkeley's buchanan street mass vaccination site regardless of where they live or work. and reminder, abc 7 news has assembled a vaccine team dedicated to getting answers and getting you the latest information. if you have any questions,

just ask us at www.abc7news.com. shifting to new details now on the expansion of credits for prisoners in california. it could speed up the release of 76,000 inmates. the state department of corrections issued a statement today saying it's not an early release program. inmates will be eligible to get an increased amount of time off their sentence for good behavior or time served credits. the state says voters approved the program in 2016 and upheld it this past november. california increased the early release credits for some inmates today, but says it still needs final approval. the california democratic party is holding their convention this weekend, and late this afternoon, governor newsom addressed the delegates and the effort to recall him. keep in mind, everything is happening virtually because of the pandemic. the governor focused on promoting the state's effort in fighting the coronavirus and then had this to say about

15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance. academy award winning actress olympia dukakis has died. she took home the oscar for best supporting actress in 1987 for moon struck. she also won a golden globe for the role. she performed many times at the american conservatory theater and was the grand marshal of the san francisco pride parade in 2011. her family says she died this morning in new york city after months of failing health. she was 89 years old. developing news now, it's never too early to think about fire season, and today is wildfire awareness day in california. the state is increasing its effort this year to get people ready, and that includes a new program that could be rolling into the city where you live.

a grant program has led to the creation of 15 trailers packed with information as well as the tools needed to create a defensible space. >> we have learned fire safe council and the community level, it usually takes a face to face conversation to really help people understand the complexity and what they need to do personally. >> they also started a text alert system for people to receive messages and tips for how to prepare for wildfire season. in the south bay, an effort to beautify the environment along coyote creek. today dozens of volunteers got to work cleaning up litter at santa clara county's longest waterway. organizers say illegal dumping and encampments are increasing pollution in the creek. today also included outreach services for those experiencing homelessness in the area. hot meals tolexchangfofilled garbage bags. and here's a you ready to get aw?

terminals and cheaper rates at certain lots. travelers can also go to the airport's website to check parking availability in real time before they head to the airport. two people were trapped under a toppled tree in san francisco. the tree fell just over hour ago near jackson and front street. one person was taken to the hospital, another person was able to free herself. she said she's shaken up, but will be okay. the fire department is warning people about today's fast moving winds. and drew tuma is here to tell us more about the winds. >> yes, they're gusting well over 40 miles per hour where they're strongest, and that continues for the second half of the weekend tomorrow. a live look at sfo. we have the marine layer overhead, the fog streaming above. but you look at the trees. they're just blowing in the wing right now thanks to a cold front that moved through

earlier this of kicked upthe ndacss the entire region. we're gusting close to 50 miles per hour at sfo. 41 is the current wind in the city. those are very strong winds. that's the reason we had trees come down in the city. strong winds in the bay as well, 25 miles per hour. equally as strong along the peninsula. busy in the hills as well. up about a thousand feet, and the winds out of the north and northwest, and they're gusting over 30 miles per hour at times in the strongest spots. where you have the wind and fog right now, you're on the cool side. it's 54 in half moon bay, the city as well. close to sunshine like santa rosa. your location is key to how warm it feels outside. we have high pressure building in. this will actually bring about warmer temperatures over the next couple of days. there's also an area of low pressure that will dive east.

it's a classic set up for a wind tunnel over california, and that continues into sunday. so tomorrow morning, it stays pretty breezy out there. gusts from time to time over 20 miles per hour, and when it's windy in the overnight hours, it tends to keep the temperature a little elevated over the next 12 hours. tomorrow afternoon, so rinse and repeat forecast when it comes to the winds. the strongest gusts probably close to 50 miles per hour along the coastline. thankfully it's an on shore wind, meaning it keeps the relative humidity pretty high, but it's a different story in the central valley where we have fire danger and a red flag warning in effect tomorrow and lasting through tuesday. they'll have a dry north wind racing down the mountain, drying out the air, wawe'll kee warning in effect with solano county as well. back here at home, temperatures overnight tonight on either side of about 50 degrees with that wind continuing. stays windy tomorrow, but tomorrow is a little warmer
