>> these people chanted and marched from to city hall to demand justice for their elders and other victims of hate crimes. the center for the study of hate and extremism has found that anti-asian hate crimes are up 140% this year compared to last. in south bay, a message of unity and a cold to action. community members and leaders were joined for a march to stop asian eight. the march started that franklin square and ended at center park. organizers are calling on lawmakers to take action against the rising violence against asian americans. >> we has local community leaders need to let our riches pictures know that we have to be very strict. the should be consequences for all of these things happening. people should be held responsible.

>> organizers say it is their responsibility to stand in solidarity with all communities facing hate and discrimination. in the east bay, if you need to get vaccinated, there are plenty of opportunities this weekend. abc 7 news was at a clinic in fremont. it will be open again tomorrow. appointments are recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome. organizers say people should not have any trouble getting a shot right now. >> now that it is open to the general public, there is so much access. they can go to their local pharmacies and be able to get vaccines pretty regularly. >> if you cannot make it there this weekend, there are clinics plan for next week and. contra costa county has a couple of temporary walkup clinics this week and. one is that the pittsburgh youth development center, the other at st. john missionary baptist church in richmond. new appointment is needed. the sites are only eligible for county residents. they are open from 9:00 through 4:00 tomorrow.

the number of people in the hospital with covid has hit an all-time low in california, down from a high in january of nearly 23,000 to 1681 yesterday. the state also reports nearly 40% of people in the state are fully vaccinated. two vaccination sites are closing due to the lack of demand. the sites at the at the fairgrounds and in the canal neighborhood will stay open through today for people getting their first shot and through may 29 for their second. also starting today, everyone 16 and older can get vaccinated at berkeley's buchanan street mass vaccination site, regardless of where they live or work. abc 7 news has assembled a vaccine team dedicated to getting answers and the latest information for you. if you have any questions, had to our website, abc7news.com.

new details on the expansion of credits for prisoners in california. he could speed up the release of 76,000 inmates. the state department of corrections has issued a statement today saying it is not an early release program, but inmates will be eligible to get an increased amount of time off their sentence for good behavior or's time served credits. voters approved the program in 2016 and upheld it this past november. california increased the early release credits for some inmates today, say it still needs final approval. the california democratic party is holding its convention this weekend. late this afternoon, governor gavin newsom addressed the delegates and the effort to recall him. everything is happening virtually because of the pandemic. the governor focused on promoting the effort of the state in fighting the coronavirus. then he had this to say about the recall. >> national republicans and extreme right-wingers, they are not they are throwing everything they can at their recall power

olympia dukakis has died. she took the oscar for best supporting actress in 1987 for moonstruck. she also won a golden glove for that role. she performed many times at san francisco's american conservatory theater and served as grand marshal of the san francisco pride parade in 2011. she died this morning in new york city after months of failing health. she was 89 years old.

turning to developing news, it is never too early to think about fire season. today is wildfire awareness day in california. the state is increasing efforts this year to get people ready, including a new program that could be rolling into the city where you live. a grant program has led to the creation of 15 trailers packed with information and the tools needed to create a defensible space. >> we have learned that usually takes a face-to-face conversation to really help people understand the complexity in what they need to do personally. >> they have also set up a text alert system where people can sign up to sit receive messages on how to prepare for fire season. in the south bay, an effort to beautify the environment. dozens of volunteers in san jose got to work, cleaning up litter on the longest waterway in the area. illegal dumping and encampments are increasing pollution in the creek. today's cleanup included
