or mexico city's metro city. the mayor says a support beam on the overpass gave way. the construction of that metro line has been plagued by problems and accusations of mismanagement and of course we'll bring you more details as soon as we get them. back here at home, the civil war between the republican party is escalating. former president trump is working to consolidate power once again falsely claiming the election he lost was stolen, but one of the top republicans in congress, liz cheney, is fighting back calling trump's lie poison for democracy. the question now is whether cheney can survive politically. this morning, congresswoman liz cheney is doubling down on her fight with former president trump exposing a growing rift in the republican party. >> she has made clear if she is going down, she is going down swinging and hard against president trump. >> reporter: cheney, the third highest ranking republican in the house, is slamming other republicans who perpetuate trump's false claim that the presidential election was stolen from him. in a tweet, cheney accused anyone who spreads that falsehood of poisoning our democratic system.

the congresswoman's message came in response to an earlier statement by former president trump when he declared the fraudulent presidential election of 2020 will be from this day forth known as the big lie, trump working to rebrand the phrase used for his false claims about the election. >> on one level all she's doing is speaking the truth, but she's speaking the truth to the single most influential figure in the party. >> reporter: cheney is one of only ten house republicans who voted impeach trump for inciting january's riot at the u.s. capitol reportedly saying that trump crossed the line. cheney and house minority leader kevin mccarthy gave different answers back in february about the future role trump should play in the party. >> i don't believe he should be playing a role in the future of the party in our country. >> on that high note -- [ laughter ] >> reporter: according to the website the hill, mccarthy's top allies are vowing to remove cheney from her leadership post this month. that role includes being the conference chairwoman overseeing party messaging. >> and i'm also no fan -- [ booing ] >> reporter: it comes after gop

senator mitt romney was booed over the weekend by members of his own party at a convention in his home state of utah. like cheney, romney also voted in favor of impeaching trump. >> it was driven by the fervor that people feel out there for president trump. republicans continue to follow him. republican activists overwhelmingly believe what he has said and believe that any republican who opposes him is someone that, yes, is deserving of boos. >> and former gop president george w. bush addressed the so-called civil war in the republican party in a recent podcast dismissing claims that the election was stolen and urging the party to be more inclusive. a standoff outside cia headquarters has ended with a suspect in the hospital. sources say at least one fbi agent opened fire on the man when he got out of his car holding a gun. the suspect was wounded. officials call this a security incident but would not elaborate. more states are taking steps to fully re-open. florida's governor suspending all local covid restrictions. but in washington, d.c. the mayor is cracking down on

dancing at wedding receptions banning dancing as a precaution. meanwhile, more help is on the way to india, which faces a covid catastrophe with less than 2% of people vaccinated. abc's ike ejiochi is in washington with more. ike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth. health experts say the 6.1.7 variant currently circulating in india is more transmissible, but that our vaccines should hold up against it. nevertheless, the country is taking steps to prevent it from becoming the dominant strain. this morning the u.s. is banning travel from india by non-u.s. citizens, this as the 6.1.7 variant has already been identified in three states. >> all the data we have so far suggests that our vaccines are going to hold up against the variants from india. >> reporter: the ban comes as hospitals in india are overrun by a record-breaking 400,000 new cases a day. the u.s. stepping up to help sending shipments of oxygen, vaccines and supplies. here in the states a different story. the u.s. hitting a new

milestone. new coronavirus cases are now under 50,000 for the first time since october. more than 105 million americans are now fully vaccinated. new data shows children now account for nearly one-quarter of new cases. >> i think it's important to note that children's cases have continued to decline since our winter surge, and, in fact, they're following kind of a course very similar to adult cases. they're just not dropping quite as fast, and i think that's almost entirely due to the vaccine which, of course, is not available yet to children. >> reporter: but the demand for shots in this country is down significantly plunging 26% in the last three weeks to 2.4 million doses a day stoking new fears from health experts. >> what we want is to get to a level of herd immunity where you can go about your day-to-day life and not have to worry about exposure. >> reporter: still, states are moving to lower covid restrictions. the governors of new york, new jersey and connecticut releasing a joint statement declaring a significant easing of covid-19 restrictions allowing most businesses to fully re-open on

may 19th. >> this means that the events that we all associate with in summer can go forward. >> reporter: florida going even further suspending all related public health restrictions immediately. >> the fact is we're no longer in that state. >> reporter: and today, oklahoma following suit. its governor withdrawing the state's state of emergency declaring it's time to return to normal. now, several florida mayors have come out against governor desantis' move so to suspend covid restrictions. the mayor of st. petersburg, florida frustrated saying the governor doesn't always know which each individual community needs because they're not here and they don't live here. kenneth. >> ike there in washington, thank you. president biden has agreed to allow more than 62,000 refugees into the country following backlash from democrats. it's a major reversal after the white house said it would lead the annual cap on refugees at 15,000, which was set by president trump. scientists are tracking an out-of-control chinese rocket falling back to earth that could

partially survive re-entry into the atmosphere. the rocket launched last week, and the boosters were supposed to fall into the ocean. but they fell into earth's orbit. that means the rocket parts, which are 98 feet long, could fall to earth any day now landing anywhere from new york to beijing to new zealand. one expert told a nasa youtube channel a similar mistake with a rocket last year sent debris raining down over africa causing serious damage. >> it had these long metal rods like, you know, 15-meter-long metal rods that were slicing through the atmosphere that crashed into buildings in these villages in the ivory coast. luckily no one was hurt, but over like a 100-mile radius they found debris that was big hardware that likely caused damage. >> nothing this heavy has fallen back to earth in more than 30 years. a large part of the south could see more severe storms today. strong winds blew the roof off a courthouse in northwest arkansas last night. other buildings were also damaged in the area.
