joining us. i'm ama daetz. >> you spoke with witnesses about what happened and city leaders about what needs to be done. >> the women who are in their 80s and 60s are in san francisco general hospital receiving treatment right now. a city official tells me one woman was stabbed in the arm and torso. the other woman in the elbow. everyone i've spoken to today is absolutely horrified that this happened. >> i was kind of worried because my back was turned. it could have been me instead. >> reporter: patricia lee was working at the flower stand when she saw a man walk by her with a knife in his hand. >> it was a pretty big knife. it has knuckles in the handle and he had like a blade. the blade has like holes in there. like a military knife. >> scott: see says the man walked to the muni platform and stabbed two men. >> ben: the back was turned

and all i see was the the flying. he walked away like sunday morning. >> how does that make you feel? >> unsafe and feel like we need more officers patrolling.office >> reporter: officers canvassed the area. sfpd arrested the suspect a 64- year-old san francisco man. >> this is something that is happening to asian people in our communities specifically. this is a pattern. >> scott: the stabbing and arrest happened in san francisco's supervisor matt haney's district. >> it was broad daylight on market street with a crowd of people. how did this happen. >> it's hard to imagine anything more disgusting and awfuwag for the bus. they were targeted. this is an environment where your broad daylight people are around where you should be safe. >> what can the city do to keep

people safe? because this shouldn't happen any time of day. >> yeah, it shouldn't happen any time of day. we have to hold people accountable who are committing crimes like this. we have to have police in areas where people need to be safe and have them more visible. >> reporter: police tell me they do not have evidence of hate crime but are not ruling it out. i'm told assault with a deadly weapon are possible. i heard a few moments ago that both women are out of the surgery. they're stable and their families are with them and of course we wish them a speedy recovery. firefighters have had a busy few days in the bay area. a car fire late this afternoon llside. o county raced up crews were mopping up around 6:30. you can see smoke and ashy smoke still rising into the

air. the flames came dangerously close to some fire lines. also in the north bay, firefighters had a small wildfire in santa rosa under control tonight. it started in the area of leslie road and spring road and burned a couple of acres. there's no word on what started that fire. businesses are preparing to reopen. the county is the first in the bay area to reach the less restrictive yellow all others are waiting to open and they remain in the red. >> i didn't think the yellow tier was ever going to come. >> reporter: but it has. and the roller rink will open friday for more than just me and this little 6-year-old. good news after they tried to unsuccessfully tried to open twice in the orange tier and was shut down by the city. >> now is my turn.
