nih director dr. francis collins in a moment. but first, whit johnson joins us live from a mass vaccination site in white plains, new york. good morning, whit. >> reporter: robin, good morning. this next phase of the rollout presents a new set of challenges, the infrastructure is already in place but demand has dropped considerably. president biden acknowledging that these next two months are pivotal if we hope to win our independence from the virus. president biden laying out his administration's newest goals in the fight against the coronavirus getting 70% of adults at least one dose of vaccine and 160 million fully vaccinated by july 4th. >> that means giving close to 100 million shots, some first shots, other second shots, over the next 60 days. >> reporter: the new phase focusing on three areas. adding more vaccine locations, increasing confidence in the shots and getting children between the ages of 12 and 15 vaccinated. the fda could expand emergency use authorization of the pfizer

>> okay, whit, thank you very much. let's bring in the director of the nih dr. francis collins. we talked about the progress at the top of the program but also appear to be hitting a wall on vaccinations bumping up against the number of people who are willing to take -- getting to the more resistant right now. how do we break through that wall? >> well, good morning, george. i think we need to listen to what the concerns are of people who are still on the fence and those concerns ought to be addressed carefully and we shouldn't slip into this zone of somehow blaming people who haven't signed up yet to roll up their sleeves. we need to answer those questions. one of the things i would encourage people to go and look at is this new covid-19 community core. if you just google on the phrase we can do this, you can look and see. the information is there. 400 or more organizations have joined, most of them community organizations, organizations of doctors. that ought to give you a lot of confidence that it's not just government people like me that are advocating for this.
7:06 am
it is, in fact, the whole country that needs this. we're in this together. we americans are pretty good at doing things together once we get that calling. so have a look at that and if you're one of those people waiting, maybe it's time to look at the evidence and decide whether it's time to just go forward and be part of this solution. that's what the president is calling us to do, to get 70% of americans with at least one dose by july 4th. we could do that. >> looks like we're heading toward approval for administering the vaccine to adolescents 12 to 15-year-olds. how big a difference will that make? what do you say to parents of those 12-year-olds to 15-year-olds? >> one of those is my granddaughter, and i can tell you there is a lot of excitement in michigan about the idea that the fifth of my five grandchildren will be eligible if fda goes ahead with this emergency use authorization. obviously this is going to be really important for the fall. high school kids in particular are known to be just about as susceptible and just about as

good as passing along this virus as other young adults and it will be really great to get that immunization schedule going well in advance of september. i'm certainly hopeful the fda, when they look at all the data, will judge this to be safe and effective and give a green light and as you heard from the president, the u.s. is ready to go in terms of making those available and, again, look at the data that's been out there now in other situations and will be released in this case. it's remarkable how safe and effective these messenger rna vaccines have been. that's what the pfizer vaccine is. so, i think, parent, get informed, look at the information, make a decision. probably your teenager wants to be part of that decision and i think the evidence will lead you in the direction of saying, yeah, let's get immunization out there. let's get this behind us. >> the evidence says that the vaccines are effective for about six months, for at least six months. what do we know about whether
7:08 am
booster shots will be necessary? >> we really don't know, george. the reason for booster shots could be one of two things. one is that the immunization fades over time. as you've said, we have very good, encouraging information that it's good for at least six months, and that's about all the time we have been able to observe this since it is such a new pandemic. the other question is these variants that we're worried about. if variants emerge for which the vaccine no longer provides adequate protection, then it might be necessary to offer people boosters that would protect you against the new version of this covid-19 virus. we hope that won't be necessary and just to encourage everybody right now, the vaccines that are currently being distributed in the u.s. work for all the variants that we are seeing in the country. so we're not ready to go there, but we have to be prepared and, if it's going to be necessary, be sure we've taken appropriate steps to get ready. >> doctor, thanks for your time and information. michael? >> thank you, george. now to the latest on that deadly train disaster in mexico
