>> but another congresswoman is already waiting in the wings to step into cheney's leadership role, and she's picking up some key support. abc's faith abubey has the latest from washington. faith, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, mona. representative liz cheney is now urging her party to choose truth and the constitution over what she calls a cult of personality. republican congresswoman liz cheney is warning her party that history is watching as her time on the party's leadership team appears to be coming to an end. cheney is a consistent critic of former president donald trump's false claim that november's election was stolen from him, and she accuses some republicans of trying to whitewash the january attack on the capitol. house republican leader kevin mccarthy recently made it clear that he wants cheney gone as the party's conference chairwoman. >> i've had it with her. you know, i've lost confidence. >> reporter: writing in "the washington post," cheney says, her party is, quote, at a

turning point and republicans must decide whether we are going to choose truth and fidelity to the constitution. cheney also warning republicans to, quote, steer away from the dangerous and anti-democratic trump cult of personality and, quote, history is watching. our children are watching. we must be brave enough to defend the basic principles that underpin and protect our freedom and our democratic process. she also vowed to continue speaking out against the backlash. >> as the party we need to be focused on the future, we need to be focused on embracing the constitution, not embracing insurrection. >> reporter: cheney is the daughter of former vice president dick cheney, trump recently called her a warmongering fool. some republicans including trump are now backing new york congresswoman elise stefanik to replace cheney in her leadership role, but not all republicans are on board. the conservative organization club for growth tweeting, quote, house republicans should find a conservative to lead messaging and win back the house majority. cheney voted with trump's agenda more than 90% of the time, far more than stefanik but the key difference is that unlike cheney, stefanik voted in january in favor of overturning

joe biden's election victory. >> signed affidavits with documented numerous unconstitutional irregularities. >> reporter: trump's growing influence on the party comes despite the former president being banned from the major social media platforms. facebook's oversight board wednesday upheld the company's decision to suspend trump for encouraging the capitol rex rammell but it was ordered that facebook clarify its policies and determine within six months whether the trump suspension is permanent. house republicans could vote as early as next wednesday on whether to premove her from her leadership position. breaking overnight caitlyn jenner sat down for her first tv interview since entering the race for governor in california. she stood by her recent comments opposing transgender girls competing in girls sports and she also laid out her position on former president trump. >> what i liked about donald trump is he was a disrupter, you know.

the yankees and mets will begin seating fans in separate areas at the ballpark. sections for vaccinated fans will be at 100% capacity. sections for unvaccinated fans, at 33%. another positive sign, the cdc now projecting a sharp decline in covid cases by july as long as vaccination rates remain high and people keep wearing masks and socially distance. >> it's absolutely true that the more we vaccinate, then there's going to be a decline in covid cases. it's also still true that winter season is our viral season. and so we expect to see some sort of viral surge that includes covid but also other common viruses like rsv and flu. >> reporter: but this morning officials warn variants of the virus and fewer people getting vaccinated remain a wild card. the u.s. is now vaccinating an average of 2.2 million people per day, far fewer than the

april high of 4 million a day. >> we are not out of the woods yet but we could be very close. >> reporter: if a booster shot early data shows its booster shots would be effective against the south african variant and moderna's president says they hope to create one vaccine for all covid variants including the strain that's ravaging india where nearly 4,000 people each day are dying from the virus. more u.s. help could be on the way. the biden administration says it's supporting easing patent and intellectual property protections for the vaccines, which could allow other countries to accelerate their own manufacturing efforts. the india variant has now been confirmed in california. meantime, some good news for americans struggling itnns ially during the pandec.rs but the judge now says that ruling won't take effect until the justice department's appeal is heard. protesters gathered in atlanta last night angry that a police officer who was fired for fatally shooting a black man has been reinstated. authorities say officer garrett

rolfe shot rayshard brooks outside a wendy's last june. police said brooks had been struggling with them after they confronted him for passing r a . he'll stay on administrative leave as he faces a felony murder charge. a virginia couple charged with kidnapping a toddler at a church nursery. police staked out the mobile home and rescued noah trout, one day after he was abducted. investigators looking into reports that the couple may have stopped at two other churches before noah was taken. he was unharmed but his head was shaved possibly to change his appearance. >> you'll be happy to know that the emergency medical services arrived on the scene shortly after noah was recovered, and he seemed fine, but he will be taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. he has been reunited with his family. >> police say the suspects have no apparent connection to the boy's family.

the faa has handed down some hefty fines against unruly passengers and charged four a total of $67,000. most refused to wear masks. one woman accused of fighting with flight attendants was fined nearly $33,000. a scare on campus at clarion university in pennsylvania. a bear climbed up a tree and got stuck. rescuers gathered around a big tarp, tranquilized the animal and caught it when it fell. the bear was released into a rural area. time now for a look at your thursday weather. new video shows a couple of land spouts that were spotted in southern nebraska wednesday but the forecast today calls for mostly clear skies across the plains. looking at the radar, some rain today for the midwest and parts of the south, but nothing is severe as they've seen in the last few days and showers today for the pacific northwest. checking today's high

emotional reunions are taking place on u.s. soil more than three years after thousands of migrant children were separated from their parents under the trump administration's zero tolerance policy. this mother hadn't seen her two sons since 2018 when they were 13 and 15. they're among hundreds of families the biden administration is still trying

to reunite. for now those parents initially deported are being allowed to stay in the u.s. temporarily. we turn to colorado now where a man is due in court today charged with the murder of his wife nearly one year after earancother'day.test. >> reporter: this morning, an arrest in the disappearance of a colorado mother of two who vanished nearly a year ago. authorities in chaffee county charging suzanne morphew's husband, barry, for her murder. months after barry pleaded for suzanne's safe return even offering a $200,000 reward. >> if anyone is out there that can hear in that has you, please, no questions asked, however much they want, i will do whatever it takes to get you back. honey, i love you. >> reporter: suzanne was last heard from on mother's day 2020 and said she was going for a bike ride alone and when the 49-year-old didn't return, a neighbor called police.

at the time the family said barry morphew was in denver more than three hours away. law enforcement scoured the area where suzanne went missing including her home where investigators were seen carrying bags of potential evidence. charges against morphew include first degree murder, tampering with physical evidence and attempting to influence a public servant. >> today is not the day for celebration, nor does it mark the end of this investigation. rather it's the next step of this very difficult yet very important journey as we seek justice for suzanne and her family. >> though suzanne's body has not been found, the d.a. says that won't hurt their case. >> i'm the one that considers how strong my case is before i bring charges and i wouldn't bring charges unless i was confident. >> reporter: the arrest warrant has been sealed. so no other details are being released yet when it comes to suzanne's death or a possible motive in the case. kenneth, mona. >> andrea, thank you. a woman in africa has given

arriving just as a train smashes through a semi truck near houston destroying the truck's load of bottled water. the big rig had become stuck on the railroad crossing. no one was injured. also caught on camera, an suv crashing through a bar in chicago. police say the driver hit the gas instead of the brake while parking. no one was hurt. another major issue has surfaced for peloton on the heels of its massive recall. a bug in the software used in the company's bikes and treadmills may have exposed users' personal data including their age, location and workout history. a security firm detected it in a version of its software back in january. it comes as the company's ceo apologizes for not recalling two popular treadmills sooner, the tread and tread plus. treadmills are linked to one child's death and dozens of injuries. video shows how easy it is for one child to become trapped under the machine. owners of the treadmill are advised to stop using them and contact peloton for a refund. a major milestone in the race to send tourists into

space. one private citizen is about to take a strummer trip that's out of this world. this morning, the race to send tourists into space is taking off as jeff bezos' company blue origin announces it will launch its first sightseeing flight this summer. >> we have flown this vehicle 15 times, and after the last flight, we said, it's time. let's put people on board. >> reporter: on july 20th the company's shepard rocket will take off from texas carrying six passengers. the first seat on the rocket will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. the winner will become the first private citizen to launch into space from u.s. soil. astronauts on the space station cheering on this new space race. >> this will hopefully open the door for many more people, civilians, per se, to be able to come up and experience what we experience. >> reporter: while the ticket this summer will fetch a sky high price, the trip won't be a long one, only about 11 minutes with passengers experiencing only a few minutes of weightlessness before returning to earth.
