an off-campus party is being blamed for a covid outbreak among students in the awk alanis union high school district and contra costa county. officials say tested positive late last month. 19 of the students go to last loehmann's high school in walnut creek. the other to go to other heights within the district. contact tracing helped identify another 100+ students who redirected to quarantine at home. a new study ve died of covid-19 in the u.s. researchers looked at excess mortality from march 2020-may 3rd. the number is 57% higher than official figures. today, unemployment hit new pandemic lows. 498,000 applications were filed last week. here in california, 1547 new covid cases were reported in the last day. test positivity increasedpositid

not surprising. people not vaccinated know they have to assessn ri people who are baue vaccinated may still wear the mask because they may be living with someone who can't get their shot and who has high- risk. i don't think it is up to the cdc or the public health department to give people rules for every single activity they are doing. we know what commonsense measures are. we know what we can best do to keep ourselves safe. >> of california reaches herd immunity this summer and many experts expect that will happen, can we ditch the masks at that point? are we okay? >> i think theoretically, there are multiple factors. this essay we reach herd immunity. let's say the cases continue to go down. we get to the inflection point like what we have seen in israel. i can see mask restrictions being lifted from a lot more businesses but a couple of things to take into account.int.

california is wednesday. we don't have isolated herd immunity. we have cases that could come in. i can still see people saying i will continue to wear a mask because that keeps me safe and that is okay. what we just heard in that package with masks have also reduced other transmission of other diseases as well. after sars about 20 years ago we saw people from other countries continue to wear masks. that is fine if people want to do that. >> let's talk vaccine boosters. what is your take and how soon do you think people will need them and get them? >> going right into it i think it is tough to actually make a claim on if and when we will need vaccine boosters. we we have seen data about how well the current vaccines are working against the current variance. i think will be a different conversation come fall when we see that inflection point. i will play skeptical. i don't think we will completely eradicate coronavirus. i think that is realistic. i think the possibility of a booster shot is in i think people should mentally get prepared for the possibility and make a decision that is right for you. >> a lot of people have had reactions to the second shot. do you think it will be difficult to get them to come back in for the third?

tech. there was something magical about mixing the idea of robots with the idea of pizza. it makes you giggle. you imagine these two really different worlds together. and i think what was so beautiful and exciting about that early stage, we had that spirit of imagination. the segue for me really was this experience of becoming a parent for theent foe time. and there was something about being responsible for another human and raising another human that made me feel a lot of focus and energy around this idea of just completely rebuilding a system. so it could be carbon-neutral, climate-friendly and regenerative. what happened for me was this inner awareness of my purpose and wanting to make sure that the work that i was doing in the world was squarely aligned with my purpose. that's why i decided to step away and really begin working on planet forward.
