refreshing afternoon, 50s at the coast, 60s around the bay, 70s inland. moronta weekend forecast coming up, reggie? following developing news out of the south bay, san jose police officer is hurt after getting hit by a car. is happened around 2:00 this morning, near peer elaine and suncrest avenue. police say the officer was on duty and standing outside his marked patrol car at the time. we are told the officer is going to be okay, and the suspect is in custody. it's not clear yet what led up to this crash and if we get more information, we of course will pass it along to you. from a man accused of stabbing two women out of san francisco bus stop is expected to be in court today. district attorney has vowed to be at that arraignment, to represent the prosecution. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield i'm alive outside the hall of justice with more on the charges filed. amy? >> reporter: hi there. yes, got the charges right here. attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse. and we have video of the attack. we are going to show it to you but it is brutal to watch. just a heads up, if you want to turn away for a couple of seconds, this was obtained by anger dion lim, the resources. you can see in the video, a man

walks up to two elderly asian ladies who are standing on the platform on market street, and to stop them. you can see the randomness of it. they don't even seem to see him coming before he attacks. this was on tuesday in san francisco. there are now questions of whether this could've been prevented. the man accused of the crime, patrick thompson, has a criminal history. he has also been previously charged with assault with a deadly weapon. that was a separate case. so many are asking why he was even on the streets to begin with. >> he just walks up to them, but he shouldn't have been out in the first place. period. violent criminal, did an unprovoked attack before, and he is free to walk around, to do it again, and guess what he did? >> reporter: san francisco district attorney chase aberdeen said he will appear at today's arraignment of thompson, and he plans to handle this high-

profile case. the two victims, one in their 60s, one in their 80s, their recovering in the hospital. he said he visited their bedsides and he said their strength and courage is inspiring. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. amy, thank you. the fbi is increasing efforts and resources to combat hate crimes in northern california. a new four prong approach includes increasing investigative activity, improving law-enforcement coordination, increasing community outreach, and launching a public awareness campaign. and look at this, that campaign involves the new advertisement on muni train, to encourage people to report hate crimes. the fbi says the more people who come forward, the better they can investigate. >> i can tell you from personal experience, these incidents, this is how this is always occurred, maybe not increasingly high numbers during certain periods of time, but people were always reluctant and scared to make it known. and i think people are feeling a little bit more open and willing to do so now. i'm think for that. >> the fbi is also sharing

the bank with her hands up people nearby clapped as another hostage walked out followed by two more. no one got hurt. this morning, pfizer said they are now applying for full approval of its covid-19 vaccine. the drug company and its partner, biontech, believe their vaccine has enough effectiveness and safety data to meet the stringent fda requirements to gain full approval. this process is expected to take months though. pfizer is the first company to seek full approval, but moderna said it will start its process later this month. experts believe a full approval could encourage hesitant americans to get vaccinated. if you received two moderna vaccine shots, you might not be done. booster shots will likely be needed every 9 to 12 months. the company's president says, half the people participating in a booster shot trial no longer have detectable immunity against the new code variance. covid cases continue to

drop, and part of that success goes to dr. david kessler, the chief science officer of the white house covid response team and the former dean of ucsf medical school. abc7 news vaccine team member kate larsen spoke exclusively with kessler. he says, he is not so sure that herd immunity is actually on the horizon for the entire united states. both vaccines, the u.s. could eliminate the most severe cases and deaths. he's not focused on overcoming vaccine hesitancy. >> if you been vaccinated, talk to somebody who has not been vaccinated. we have to be able to help people overcome those fears. we are very close. >> from faith leaders and physicians to celebrities, he said hundreds of million dollars are now being spent on getting the message out. grocery workers in san francisco could be paid an extra $5 and our in hazard pay for another month. next week, the board of supervisors is set to vote on whether to extend the line until june 15th. it requires grocery and drug stores with at least 500 employees to be paid hazard

pay. according to the examiner, the grocery industry has argued against this proposal because san francisco is in the yellow tier now and there's no longer justification for the hazard pay. the law went into effect in march, but is set to expire may 19th. in the east bay, five people at a senior care facility were able to escape the fire. contra costa county fire department that it started just before 4:00 yesterday afternoon at the facility on castle hill road near interstate 680 in walnut creek. neighbors say they heard explosions, they thought maybe there was an earthquake, others thought it sounded like a tree fell on a home. >> i got up immediately, i went outside to look and i could hear a woman screaming. >> the house explodes, it sounded like an explosion. the neighbors said the same thing. everybody thought was their house, that's how it was so loud. >> i live on the hill right here. the minute the two big explosions went off, i looked out the window, and everything was black.

and army training in south carolina is charged this morning with dozens of crimes after an armed school bus hijacking. so police are saying that this is 23-year-old javon, who held and army issued rifle at the bus drivers had. investigators say he was only in the army for three weeks and hold the driver he wanted to get home. gma spoke with the student who was on the bus. >> i called my dad and dad and and my dad started freaking out. >> several soldiers over the course of the initial stages does have that desire, anxiety, due to separation from their families to get home.

taxes. this is an effort by the owner to ensure that front of house and back of house workers are getting paid fairly. the new tip remodel starts when the cafe reopens for interlining in a few weeks. since the start of the pandemic, sonoma county has really become a hotspot for bay area real estate. real estate and analysis by our data journalism team found that 39% of homes in sonoma county were selling for more than their asking price of a by the end of 2020. that is double what it was before the pandemic. on average, buyers are paying $28,000 above the list price. we asked a local real estate agent why the recent fires haven't scared away >> i would say there were more covid and pandemic related i can deal with the fire. i can deal with all that, i can't deal with covid and the pandemic. i need a place to be. >> agents say they are getting dozens of offers on anything that is below $1 million.

francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. thank you, amy. developing news av's vaccinations rise in the u.s. the number of new infections continues to drop. this morning, at the lowest level we have seen in seven months. more than 147 million americans have received at least one dose of the covid vaccine. that is 57% of adults. meantime, a new survey from the kaiser family foundation suggests that enthusiasm for vaccination may be reaching a plateau. it also found that only three in 10 parents plan to vaccinate their kids. this is coming as drugmakers await emergency authorization from the fda for kids to get the shots. >> don't be worried, don't be scared, people here know what they are doing. >> early data from moderna suggests it's vaccine is up to 96% effective in 12 to 17-year- olds, with no safety issues. the company has a goal to make the shots available before the next school year begins.

a party is being blamed for covid i'll break among students. this happened in us high school union district in contra costa county. according to east bay times, district officials say 21 students tested positive late last month, 19 go to lost lummis high school in walnut creek, the other go to other high schools in the district. more than 100 other shootings were directed to quarantine a home. the cal state system is teaming up with hospitals and pharmacies for free public vaccination clinics. partnership includes rite aid, albertsons, safeway, cvs, and walmart. last month, they said it's requiring all students, faculty, and staff on campus to be vaccinated. as more people get the shot, scientists are working to answer the question, could getting two doses of a different covid vaccine improve your immune response? more than 100 people in the uk are at trial, getting injected with one dose of the pfizer vaccine, and then 20 days later, with a dose of the astrazeneca vaccine. experts say two different vaccines could expedite distribution and save lives in

let's talk about the friday morning commute, hi, francis. hi, mike. we have problems all around the bay area. in fact, a traffic alert has been issued for this injury accident in the north bay. southbound 101, in novato, as you make your way toward alexander, there was a crash where a person was trapped, now they are saying the second from the left lane will be blocked for at least half an hour. you can see the traffic is backing up and growing into petaluma. so that'll be a slow ride for you. an overturned crash, westbound 24, lafayette is heavy from pleasant hill road out to happy valley road. this crash is off to the right hand side? i'm hoping the traffic will pick up, but it's been slow there whnew probm peniula, southbound 101 in san mateo, at third, there is a stalled cement truck, blocking the right lanes. we also have a wind advisory for the san mateo bridge, bay bridge, and altamont pass. , reggie? still ahead, reaction to life in prison sentence for two bay area students.
