. lot of things burned last year but california is a big state. there's plenty more to burn. it's not looking good. >> a red flag warning in effect for big portions of the bay area. fire crews bracing for a potentially dangerous weekend. good morning. thank you again for joining us. it's saturday, may 8th. let's start with that red flag warning and a quick look at the weather with lisa. hi. we are talking about snow. the mountains of the north bay, the hills of the east bay and the valleys of the east bay where red flag warning takes us through early monday. there's a look at live doppler 7. big dome of high pressure building in to the north. the highlighted areas in red, pleasanton, the east foothills, down to mount hamilton. at effected areas where the wind wills gust. the relative humidity throughout the day from ten to 20%. then it'll be dropping.

july. according to oakland's fire spokesman michael hunt this year we are saturdaying two months earliful. >> what with we are seeing very scary and severe. >> from 11:00 p.m. friday through 6:00 a.m. monday, the east bay hills will be on the highest alert a red flag warning. 15 miles an hour winds and dry conditions playing a key role. joaquin miller park closed until next week. >> you will see rov ing patrols. we prepositioned multiof muttible wind land item around the city to respond to any report of a vegetation fire. >> there are over 20,000 resident who live in oakland's highest fire prone areas, normally there would be fire inspections in mid to late titae. >> we are concerned has i hope keep it that way. >> after last year's season berkeley residents passed an eight million dollars a year tax. this fire season.

and conducted refresher wildfire training. we sent the push alert on the abc7 news app last night when the red flag warning went into effect for parts of the bay area. if you want alerts like this on weather conditions throughout the weekend, the app is free to download in the app store. meantime authorities investigating after a san francisco police officer shot a burglary suspect near oracle park. this happened just before one yesterday afternoon near brannon and third. police say that officers were investigating a car burglary when one of the officers shot a man in the wrist. two other suspects in the car drove away. investigators have not said what provoked the shooting. there is a new push this morning to get more americans vaccinated. it comes arch the country's vaccination rate dropped to two million shots a day. that is a 20% decrease from last week. christine sloan with the latest. >> very a challenge to residents. >> officials resorting to

>> i saw his face and i'm like this is the guy that, you know narcotic stabbed that man that stabd in 2017. >> benjamin recognized the man when he saw this video of the man stabbing two asian senior women. the weapon was so violently thrust into one grandmother that the handle broke off. benjamin was a security guard at this homeless shell sister along 5st and the bryant in 2017 when he witnessed and restrained thompson after he randomly attacked another man. >> he was just lying on the bed and he came up and stabbed him in the chest. the look on his face was just unbelievable at that time it. was very calm but very violent. he tried to push him out the window, broke the chain to the window. >> thompson as a long criminal history including multiple assault was a deadly

weapon from 2017 and 2019. he was released on mental health diversion in 2020. >> if something could have been done back in 2017, maybe he wouldn't be back on the street causing harm to innocent people. >> thompson was scheduled to appear in court but didn't show. i pressed the da on why he didn't do more to keep thompson off the streets. you had blamed the judge for the mental health diversion of mr. thompson back in 2020, as the da you and members of your office have every right to object. why did you not object >> he side stepped my question. >> people who suffer from mental illness in way that leave them to get arrested get treatment that can hopefully prevent future criminal conduct. >> that prevention clearly didn't work. two seniors now recovering serious injuries in the hospital. thompson's arraignment has been moved to monday. as for benjamin he said what happened in 2017 changed his life forever.

said airlines man i have to stagger bringing pilots back. >> we have kind of a glut of pilot who need to come back and go through the training. you can't bring them all back at once because there aren't sufficient simulators. >> the public should be confident that flying is safe. he said the number of error that happen is relatively small and there are back up processes in place. changes are coming to the dmv's driver's license test. it plans to eliminate the test in 25 languages and narrowing it down to seven. the test will be available in i english, spanish, and others. a memo call itself as part of an effort to modernize the process but doesn't go into specifics it. will also increase the number of questions 18 to 25. it's not clear when all the changes will take effect. and eyes on the sky this weekend as a piece of space debris comes barreling

toward earth. scientists around the world are tracking an out of control chine seconds rocket that was sent toe last week. space track which is working with the united states space force on tracking the rocket is estimating a reentry between 2:00 p.m. pacific time today and 2:00 a.m. tomorrow. nobody is exactly sure where on earth it'll end up. experts are saying not to panic. >> so much of what is land is not inhibited. central china and s ib eria and the southwest and canada and the out back of australia. it is true that the chances of getting hit are low. >> scientists aren't sure why the rocket malfunction. the government of china has not commented. you may have spotted a string of lights parade across the sky and no they aren't ufo's. they are satellites that were launched by space x

reach around 80 degrees today. it's 51 in the city. 49 in oakland. 46 in mountain view. 50 for you, 46 morgan hill and on the coast we are in the mid-40s's. we had dropped off in to the upper 30's earlier. looking at low 50's santa rosa, mid50's nevado with 65 by the delta. that's due to the gusty winds from the upper elevations being channeled through the delta and the strait. 50 in concord and looking at the winds right now they are at 64 miles an hour. now 57 miles an our. orange and purple to mount saint helena down through ben lomin. it's windy and that's above 2,000 feet and the upper elevation relative humidity is dry only in the 20% range. this will go down to perhaps the teens, maybe even some single digits out by the delta. looking at the roof camera. nice view here. dry and gusty winds elevating that fire danger for

more than 21 million people have been sick in total and it's believed that number could be under counted. while the surge in india has spun into a full blown health crisis, quietly behind the scenes doctors and others in the bay area have been working nonstop to help. while many have roots in india their compassion goes beyond their backgrounds. dan ashley has the details. >> a doctor is busy on her normal rounds at stanford hospital. if they are more tiring than usual it may be the result the human crisis half a world away. >> just called to check on you. how are you feel something. >> it's the middle of night when she started her second shift at home using social media and remote connections to relay critical information to her patients in india. people caught in the tragic surge. >> health care system there is very overwhelmed right now. several of my family members

and friends are doctors out there who are like just overwhelmed. >> she said many of the patients are separate for advice. sometimes for basic things like taking asprin or tylenol. >> big questions that my oxygen levels have been under 90%. the hospital is eight hours away. should i go or should i stay at home >> feeling the shortages of oxygen, ventilators and other devices has become a life and death struggle. enter stanford professor who we first met several years ago when he launched a worldwide search collaborative. now is he biting to an even more urgent collaborative called india covid sos. >> 300 across the world, many of them with on the ground footings in india. academics, engineers. >> it's also an on lime strzok force that's

the pandemic california's population fell by 182,000. the state announced a .46% drop in the population to just under 39.5 million people. >> i was really cramped in our two bedroom apartment. >> randy white moved his family from mountain view to tulsa, oklahoma five months ago. a grant program called tulsa remote gave him $10,000 to relocate and he now has a four bedroom house where he works remotely for stanford's it department. >> from my personal experience actually moving it was almost like the wild west. there was uhauls everywhere leaving the state. >> california's cost of living and new work from home lifestyle weren't the only factors in population decline. >> we had 50,000 die and we weren't seeing as many kids being born. >> consistent in his message sate sewn interest scott weiner said his lack of afford hack housing continues to create problems, especially in the bay
