moms, a big friend of the show. maya feller, she is standing by. there you see she is getting ready for what she thinks is a chat with us about spring produce, but no talk of fava beans or fiddle ferns today because we are whisking her away to the perfect mother's day brunch. it's a big surprise, and we'll have much more on that coming up. >> i'm so excited for that. >> i just want to know what that is. >> honestly i asked the producer the exact same question. >> i can show you a picture later. first, though, we have a lot to talk about this morning, the race to vaccinate. the u.s. reaching a milestone in the fight against the pandemic as more than 150 million americans have received at least one dose of the covid vaccine. that puts us on track to hit president biden's goal of 70% of the population having at least one shot by july 4th. >> unfortunately, though, there could be a major snag here. vaccination rates are down significantly in the last week according to a federal document. pfizer is now asking for full fda approval for their shots

with moderna next, and some public school systems in florida are getting ready to set up vaccination pods for the 12 to 15 age group. let's go back now to abc's trevor ault who is at a pfizer headquarters in new york. trevor, good morning once again. >> reporter: good morning again, dan. so the vaccines are working, and now doses are available essentially everywhere, but the focus is now shifting to maintaining our momentum and making that hard sell to hesitant americans that these shots are worth it. this morning, with now 150 million americans receiving at least one shot of the covid-19 vaccine, the white house is pushing to get hesitant americans on board with the aim of administering at least one dose to 70% of the adult population by the fourth of july. >> we're doing everything we can, bringing every resource to bear to reach americans who need more convenience or more information. >> reporter: health officials are hoping pfizer's request for full approval of its vaccine might encourage those who are

still weary. this week the country's vaccination rate fell to 2 million shots a day, a 20% drop from the week before. >> i didn't really know much about it so i thought, maybe wait a little bit and see how that goes. >> reporter: robin banks was one of many holding out on the vaccine, and he then tested positive three weeks after he was eligible for the shot, ending up in the hospital. >> i do regret not getting the vaccine earlier because i would not want to go through this. >> reporter: and the spread of the virus is still a concern. in florida, where overall cases have decreased and the governor recently suspended any covid-19 restrictions, the state is still the highest site of case load of covid variants. after spring break, the total skyrock skyrocketed. overnight, new signs of normalcy. with the atlanta braves welcoming back a full crowd at the ballpark for the first time since the pandemic began. >> it's gone.

>> reporter: and the cdc director says this week she expects a decision to potentially grant emergency authorization to give the pfizer vaccine to 12 to 15-year-olds, though for younger children like preschool age, she doesn't expect they'll be able to start getting their shots until next year. dan? >> have to wait on that. thank you, trevor, so much. let's move now to the economy and president biden on the defensive after that new jobs report showing america's hiring numbers are falling well below expectations. critics therefore are asking given these new numbers, was president biden's nearly $2 trillion rescue plan worth it? abc white house correspondent maryalice has more from the white house. maryalice, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan. like you said, these disappointing job numbers clearly frustrating the white house. they say it's a sign of just how far the country has to go to recover from the losses, from the pandemic. only about 266,000 jobs created in april.

that is less than half of the numbers created in march. unemployment actually seems to have edged up, but there were jobs added in leisure and hospitality. we have been talking so much about those industries that were hit so hard this last year, but there were losses in temporary help services, things like careers and messengers, but this news like you said just putting the white house on the defensive. republicans blasting the president. republican governors saying that the additional $300 a week in federal unemployment benefits have been keeping people from seeking work. now, president biden and treasury secretary janet yellen are really balking at that idea. they say that they always expected that the road to recovery would be long, would be bumpy. they are arguing that if anything, this demonstrates that democrats' policy proposals, things around paid family leave and paid medical leave, funding for child care are really needed right now. you are hearing a big conversation from the white house about a need to help caregivers that were just overburdened this last year,

i have been reading it in bed. it's so good. you also address significant issues including race and colorism. why was it so important for you to tackle all these issues head-on? >> when i was looking for a beach read, i was looking for a story centered on women of color, centered on women that looked like me in all of our complexities, and i don't really think that you can do an authentic story, write an authentic story about martha's vineyard with its wonderful history of -- of, you know, black folks being able to buy beachfront property on martha's vineyard at a time when they couldn't buy beachfront property anywhere else without exploring the real life issues we encounter. it was very important to me to write it in an authentic, real life, robust way, and that would including issues of race, issues of colorism, and i hope that you're enjoying reading it because i did want to reflect us in all of our complexity. so that's why.

>> it's funny you say that, sunny. a lot of books you get 100 pages in before you really get started. not this one. you get right into it. >> that's some good tease. this is your first work of fiction. i'm curious what makes it so personal. >> you know, i, as you know, cover a lot of social justice cases, social justice issues, but when i'm doing that work, i have to read the case files, and i have to read up on it, and brush up on it and it's always so very dark, and always so personal, and i wanted a getaway, you know, this has been a really hard year and a half for so many of us, and i was looking for that kind of getaway, and i couldn't find it. again, centered on people of color. i wanted to experience black joy, black beaches, and i decided like tony morrison says, if there's a book you want to read and it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it, and i started writing and sketching away, and martha's vineyard is my special place, the place that i go for refuge,

awesome custard, and then you top it with a great pecan and brown sugar crumble. you can do it in the blender or food processer if you want to make it easier on yourself. this will cook in the oven for about an hour, half the time wrapped in foil, and the other half without the foil so it gets brown and crispy on top. then for the savory side, we got this chicken apple sausage and potato hash. it's great, because if you start it, when you put the fresh toast in the oven, everything will be done at the same time. that chicken apple sausage provides just the amount of sweetness to go up against this potato and onion, garlic and crushed red pepper flakes, and then to finish it all off, a little bit of parsley for freshns. >> all right, kendra, great job. we're eating this in the studio. >> it's so good. >> nobody else will talk to me because their mouths are full. >> yeah. >> i do want to say the final price tag for this entire mother's day brunch is $38.07. that's just $9.52 per serving.
