♪ >> growing up, my mom used to always give us lottery tickets as prizes for family games or contests, so i love playing. plus, it benefits the california public-education system, so it's a win-win. but these days, driving around to find a lottery ticket can be a real pain, let alone finding parking, paying the parking meter, walking to the right store. it's an ordeal. the first thing you have to do is find the forms and then fill them out -- and find a place to fill them out. today, i think i'm going to go with my kids' birth dates and then some random numbers for my second ticket, and i'll keep my fingers crossed. >> good luck to you. >> thank you very much. now the tough part is remembering where i put my ticket. it could so easily get lost, or i might even forget to check the numbers on the right day. ooh! don't want to miss out on that money. that was an ordeal, and for some

people, it might not be worth it. but there is an easier way to play the lotto. >> this is the abc7 "bay area spotlight," sponsored by mido lotto. >> there's a new app looking to make misplaced lottery tickets a thing of the past. and here to tell us more about it is rich wheeler, president of mido lotto. hi, rich. how often do lottery tickets go unclaimed? >> so, there's about $2 billion in lottery prizes that go unclaimed every single year across the u.s. >> that's incredible. so, how does it work? >> we're very much like instacart or doordash but for lottery tickets. we're giving people the convenience to order and manage their tickets directly on their phone. don't have to get cash, don't have to go to the store. any small-tier winnings that you get, we put it directly to your wallet, and we never take any of your prize winnings. >> do you delir thticketsysally? >> so, the order that you place in the app, what's happening on the back end is, we're then fulfilling that order in an officially licensed lottery retailer.
9:58 am
and then the cool thing is, we digitize that ticket so that you, as a user, you can see your numbers, you can manage your ticket directly in the app. >> what has the response to this been? >> unbelievable. people love the fact that they don't have to get cash and go to the store, about the fact that they're gonna lose their ticket. they get reminders in the app when the draw's about to happen so they don't forget. and, of course, they're never gonna lose their ticket 'cause everything's in -- done directly in the app. we've been live about a year. we've had over 10,000 five-star reviews, so people seem to really love it. >> where did the idea for this app come from? >> we just thought, in the year 2020, 2021, it was crazy that, in an age where i can get chewing gum or a car on my phone but you couldn't get a $2 powerball ticket. so we just wanted to offer the conveniencto to be but then ao crtefun around the experience, as well, so we want to make lottery more fun and more social. you can play in groups, you can give gifts to your friends and your family. and everything's done directly in the app. >> since you can download this from the app store, how do you

keep this responsible and age-appropriate? >> well, there's two things that are making sure that people are physically located in the state. so, for california, you have to be in california to order a ticket. so we employ sort of industry best practice to geolocate you physically in the state. and then, obviously, age verification. we have to make sure people are of legal age to play. >> how is this good for the lottery and the state? >> lotteries are always looking for ways to get new revenues to support the beneficiaries that they provide revenue dollars for. particularly with our service, we're not about getting more money from people who are already playing regularly. they're already served pretty well. there's about 60% of the population that plays lottery about once a year but don't play more often just 'cause it's not that convenient in the sort of mobile age. so, we're getting new users in, new revenues, that obviously is going through to public education in california. >> great. thank you so much, rich. and for everyone at home who wants to play, you can download the app at midolotto.com or the app store. or you can scan the qr code on your screen to install and claim
