now from abc 7, live breaking news. right away, an all out assault as firefighters battle not just the flame but the winds. as a grass fire takes off in solano county. with that, we say good evening and thank you for joining us, i'm deon limb. it didn't take much to spark a fire that quickly grew into a dangerous wildfire today. that fire started off lopes road. and the winds triggered a red flag warning which helped push it to 45-acres. cornell bernard was right there as firefighters fought to get it under control. he joins us live where you can

see lots of activity behind you cornell. >> reporter: the red flag winds still very strong here in solano county today. firefighters mopping up, keeping an eye on hot spots in the hills. the fire burned 45-acres today. and a neighbor says his lawnmower may have started the fire. >> i got scared. i was nervous. i locked up one dog, because he was antsy. >> anthony wright called 911 the moment he saw smoke and flames near his property. minutes later the fire was making a run up the hill, fueled by acres of dry grass, cal fire calling in grounds crews and air support to fight it. air tankers making a low altitude attack, dropping fire retardant. >> the eucalyptus caught fire after the field caught fire. i thought it was going to domino effect. they caught it. he grabbed what he could to try to put the fire out.

>> a hose and fire extinguisher. got it from our well. drug it back there and started spraying. but strong winds were no match. given the northern wind conditions we've experienced and the dryer conditions, the fire took off rapidly, spotted over the ridge. >> i was trying to cut the grays down. >> rosenberg rodriguez believes he accidentally started the fire while cutting call grass on his riding lawnmower. >> i hit a rock with the lawnmower. and that sparked it. and that's how it started. >> firefighters say one spark is all it takes during red flag fire conditions. >> it's keeping me up at night. hopefully homeowners are doing their due diligence. >> he's seen fires near their home before. and he's ready for another long summer. >> one month ago it was green and now it's all golden state, dry, but the fires are real

bad. >> tear bad. a grass fire this large so early in the season really has firefighters concerned, it's hot and dry. it feels like june or july but it's only may. despite what we heard from that homeowner today cal fire is still investigating the cause of this blaze. live in solano county, abc 7 news. there's a red flag warning in effect right now for parts of the east and north bay. meteorologist drew tuma joining us on the roof over looking the bay and gives us a look at the conditions. it feels like it's the middle of summer. we're in fire season all ready. it's may, we have an offshore wind event under way. it's gusty in areas, maximum gusts, any where from 20 to 30 miles per hour. and the winds, warm and dry air. humidity levels are very, very low. especially inland from napa to cop cord to fairfield to antioch, livermore, the

more important than ever to actually implement them. >> i'm hearing from my fellow mayors and organizers that we don't have 24/7 response. this is a shortcoming. >> the council discussed new training for 911 dispatchers along with new use of force policies for alameda police. they also want to establish a civilian over sight board and launch an outreach campaign to educate the public about mental health resources. as the bay area experiences a spike in crimes against the aapi community the city of santa clara is providing a pathway for people to become allies, today city leaders held a virtual workshop to teach bystanders what to do if they witness verbal harassment. the seminar included how to safely deescalate various situations and how to provide support and solidarity to the person being targeted. >> a lot of times when we hear

about these hate incidents and hate crimes being committed, a lot of times people standing around have done nothing or don't know what they're supposed to do. >> the city of santa clara partnered with the council on american islamic relations for today's event. sir francis drake high school settled on a new name. it will be named after archie williams. keep in mind this is a fairly significant change. williams who was black, won a gold medal at the 1936 summer olympics in berlin. he was one of the first black pilots in world war ii. williams was born in oakland, attended uc berkeley and was later a teacher and coach at sir francis drake high school. the high school decided to change names last year as the country had a reconning with race and social justice, sir francis drake was associated with the slave trade. a rally to save city college too long over the streets of

san francisco today. >> dozens of members of the american federation of teachers joined the march from city hall to the castro. they're fighting the layoff of 160 faculty members. the union says cuts will force city college to close several departments and ethnic studies programs. they're calling on san francisco leaders to find alternative resources to fund the school. turning to the coronavirus. california is on track to hit another milestone this weekend. nearly 14 million people are now fully vaccinated in the state. that's 44% of those who the state believes need the shot. california reported just under 2000 newly diagnosed cases of covid-19 today. the seven-day positivity rate remains at 1.2%. a concert airing tonight on abc hopes to encourage everyone to get vaccinated. some communities are also offering incentives to get people to roll up their sleeves. more than 150 million american adult haves received at least one dose so far.

and as abc news reporter faith tells us, there's still some hesitancy. >> the fds a expected to grant emergency use authorization to pfizer's vaccine for children age 12-s to 15 early next week. >> we know in age group can transmit the virus and certainly we want to get that age group, those kids back to as normal a summer as possible and the vaccine is a big step in that direction. >> florida public school systems looking to set up vaccination pods for the new age group. similar to the ones hosted at high schools last weekend. so far, more tan 150 million american a dull haves received one shot of the covid-19 vaccine. the white house is hoping to administer at least one dose to 70% of the adult population by the 4th of july. as more miles per hour get vaccinated, health officials say the number beers are going in the right direction. >> cdc reported over 41,900 new

developing news, a sipe r attack shut down a pipeline that's the source for half the fuel supply. they transport from houston to the new york harbor. the company discovered the attack on friday and immediately shut down its systems. colonial says ransom ware was used in the attack. debris from an out of control chinese rocket could crash down-to-earth in less than an hour. scientist haves narrowed down the timeframe to between 6:00

tonight. that's where that red flag warning continues over night. because we do expect winds in our hills to gust over 25 miles per hour at times. then tomorrow afternoon into the early evening on our sunday, it's a breezy to windy day again. you can see strongest gusts likely exceeding 30 miles per hour. and those winds once again will drop humidity levels. we recover slightly over night. you can see a good increase especially inland. but then, with the daytime heating, those winds ramping up, those humidity level drops especially away from the coast, that's why that red flag warning will be in effect tomorrow. the details, this will last until monday for the north bay mountains and the east bay hills for the northerly winds, gusting at times over 30 to 40 miles per hour bringing that dry air, dropping humidity levels to single digits. we have to act like this is not the start of foyer season like the middle of summer because everything is so dry. we have to be cautious that any fires that do start could spread rapidly. over night tonight, it's mild
