good morning, and happy mother's day to all the moms watching this morning. also a friendly reminder, if you haven't gotten your mom a present, now is the time to do it. >> get on it. yep. >> hit the 7-eleven right now. >> we start this morning with some hopeful news. in the last week the average number of daily covid-19 cases has fallen below 44,000, down 15%, and just in the last three weeks, the natio has dropped by 25,000 cases. >> but vaccinations are also declining for the first time since early march. the seven-day average has fallen below 2 million doses a day, down by 22% in the last week alone. here then is where things stand as of this morning. almost 58% of the adult u.s. population has received at least one dose. 43% of american adults are fully vaccinated. >> we'll have more on the pandemic just ahead, including a live interview with the director of the national institutes of health, dr. francis collins. but we do begin here with what

we're learning overnight about the space debris plummeting back to earth. meteorologist rob marciano is here with the latest. good morning. >> hey, whit, well, the world has been anxiously watching and waiting for this moment, and overnight, it happened. that chinese rocket, the long march 5b as it's called, finally came crashing back down to earth. now, the chinese space agency says it happened around 10:24 last night. the debris re-entered the atmosphere over the maldives landing in the indian ocean, but the u.s. space station says their calculations say it happened over the arabian peninsula. now, so we don't know exactly where it happened, but we hope most of it burned up upon re-entry because it's massive. some of the biggest space junk ever to re-enter the atmosphere. it's 10 stories tall, 23 tons. people all over the world were watching it. here's a glimpse of it over fuji city, japan. you may remember when they launched this thing back at the end of april, normally these

rocket boosters fall down to earth but this one got caught up in orbit and part of a big problem. we have 20,000 pieces of space junk flying around there at over 17,000 miles per hour. just unbelievable to get your head around. dan. >> it is a problem, no question about it, and something we're going to continue to deal with going forward. rob, thank you very much. let's switch back to the pandemic now, and new concerns about people getting together in large gatherings and spreading the virus. today's worry of course is mother's day. abc's zohreen shah is at the airport in los angeles where we're seeing a big spike in air travel this weekend. zohreen, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. as more americans get vaccinated, more are flying. tsa's top official telling me they are shattering pandemic records. he says this shows we're returning to a sense of normalcy. this weekend, a single-day pandemic air travel record. airports like atlanta's there waa line way around th.

>> reporter: 1.7 million travelers passing tsa friday compared to 200,000 this time last year. here at l.a.x., some kids flying just to surprise mom. >> so glad you came. love you. >> i could have come back later, but i wanted to be back for mother's day. >> reporter: as acti tsa administrators saying they are significantly ramping up staff. >> between now and the fourth of july, we do expect several hundred thousand more on some of our busiest spaces. really is shaping up to be a very busy summer. >> reporter: as the traveling boom continues, airport vaccine clinics expanding. miami airport joining some us u.s. cities like atlanta monday offering the vaccine. now the focus turning to young people. the fda expected to announce this week whether 12 to 15-year-olds can get pfizer's vaccine. states nationwide preparing for the rollout. in florida, orange and osceola counties planning to create vaccination sites at

helpless. nearly everyone has a loved one who needs help right now, and for so many, there's nowhere to go. this morning, india's health care system is completely grapples with the world's largest covid crisis. at this temple, converted into a rushed onto an ambulance after news that a hospital bed had opened up nearby, running day and night for the last few weeks. the clinic tells us they stepped in to help up to 15,000 people get oxygen free of charge. >> we try our best. that's the best i can do. >> reporter: this is one of the temple's volunteers. he says at the peak, he was seeing nearly a dozen people die every day. do you think that the numbers that we're seeing out of india right now, the number of cases and the number of deaths, is it even higher? >> yes, it is. it is obviously. >> reporter: india is reporting a record-breaking more than 4,000 deaths a day. but it's widely believed the real number is actually fiv

ten ti for many, grief is turning to anger. we meet sonny at a crematorium in new delhi. he tells us his mother passed away after he finally found her a hospital bed. >> the system suddenly collapsed. it's a failure of the government. they should be taking care of each and every patient. >> reporter: many now turning to vaccines as a way out of this crisis, but only a small fraction of the country's billion-plus population has been fully vaccinated. >> there seems to be a severe shortage of vaccines. if you see the board here, the outside, you will see that covaxin is not available at all. >> reporter: the u.s. joining several outside countries in offering aid. vices arrivingors and oxygen mumbai fdaeving, but it still may not be enoh. we just spoke to d d whnsim t most is knowingow my he ave because or ran o ospace. guys, a little bit of good news. he did say things are calming down inside there slightly, but

they are still in desperate need of icu beds. whit? >> maggie rulli right there for us in delhi with that awful situation. thank you so much. we do turn now -- joining us now is dr. francis alcohol ins, director of the national institutes of health. thank you so much for being with us this mother's day. first i do want to pick up on the crisis there in india right now. some aid groups argue the u.s. is not doing enough, accusing us of hoarding vaccines. we heard in that report the pleas from people. should we be doing more to help? >> well, i can assure you this is on front of mind for everyone trying to figure out what more can be done. we are shipping ventilators and oxygen, as you saw. ppe is being sent in large quantities. vaccines will be made available as soon as they are cleared by the fda, which we think should be fairly soon. so all those efforts are absolutely moving as quickly as possible. it is absolutely heartbreaking to see what's happening in india.

i might say while india has most of the attention when you look at some of what's happening in south america, there's deep, deep trouble there as well. we are not done with this global pandemic by any means, even though here in the united states we are beginning to see really encouraging signs of getting past the worst of it. >> and as we've seen with this pandemic, threats overseas could certainly be a problem here for us at home, but i do want to turn back to the u.s. we are making progress on vaccinations, as you mentioned. cases coming down, but there will be family gatherings this weekend for mother's day of course. given where we are in the pandemic now, how much does that concern you, and what advice do you have for how we should actually get together? >> well, first of all, let me say happy mother's day to all the moms 'cause this is their day. and moms are the ones who have often been handling a lot of the responsibilities for covid. you have been ordering the masks and the hand sanitizers. you have been checking out the information about the vaccines. in a lot of families, it's the moms who have basically gone out

and said, yes. we need to get this family immunized. and maybe they haven't. maybe the dads and the adult children haven't quite gotten around to it yet. s a little pitch here. all you husbands, sons and daughters who are 16 and older, give mom a present. sign up and get your vaccine if you haven't already done it, and let me give you one little tip here of how to find out how to do that. go to your phone and just punch in a text to get vax, g-e-t-v-a-x. so that would be 438829. punch in your zip code, and you will get immediately three locations where vaccines are available. so no reason to say, i don't know where to go. g-e-t-v-a-x, 438829. it's mother's day. give mom a present. she'll love you for it. >> all right. speaking of sons and daughters, this week we are expecting the pfizer vaccine will likely be authorized for kids 12 to 15, but many par sti hesitant, even those who got the vaccine themselves.

what's your message to them? >> i would say if the fda decides to issue this, it's because they've looked with great care at the data, and concluded that this is entirely safe and effective, and we've seen a lot of that data previously, but the fda is going to look at it in even more detail. that would be really encouraging that this vaccine basically works for adolescents the same way it does for adults. i have a 14-year-old granddaughter. i will tell you i'm getting asked questions by her mom and dad, and i'm saying, if fda approves it, by all means, get her signed up. roll up the sleeve. that will provide a whole lot more opportunity for freedom for those kids, and we want to be able to open up the high schools and the middle schools in the september timeline. this is the way to get started on that ahead of time and have everybody in a safer space. so i think this is a great opportunity, but let's see what fda says. i think we're going to find out this week. >> okay, we'll stand by. dr. francis collins. thank you for your time this morning, and enjoy the rest of your mother's day weekend. we do appreciate it. eva? now to the cyberattack on a

major pipeline that supplies nearly half of the fuel to the east coast. the entire network now shut down. an investigation under way. abc's elwyn lopez has more. >> reporter: this morning, a ransomware attack forcing a shutdown of one of the nation's largest pipelines. the target, colonial pipeline which supplies 45% of fuel to the east coast. its 5,500-mile network carries gas, diesel and jet fuel from texas to new jersey. >> we have seen attacks on critical infrastructure over the past five years, but nothing of kind oforeth iwh pe, but also it future i halti the ofheipelins eratio. like this and realize how vulnerable we are. >> reporter: this strike, the latest in cyberattacks in the past five months.

last december, solarwinds, which provides software to the government and fortune 500 companies, taking a hit after a massive software breach, reportedly exposing government agency emails to hackers. and in february, investigators say someone wanting to tamper with the florida water supply took control of the computer systems at a water treatment facility. as for friday's attack, experts now warning it could lead to an impact at the gas pumps. >> it's crucial to add this pipeline in service. if it drags on beyond, say, three or four days, we may start to see some supply challenges. >> reporter: now experts say gas and jet fuel prices will not spike unless the outage lasts more than three days. the fbi says it is working closely with the company and other government agencies on this, dan. >> elwyn, thank you so much. let's talk politics now, and this week ouse republicans are potentially fateful vote on the future of liz cheney. she's a member of the republican

leadership team who got herself into hot water by critic donald trump's claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged. let's bring in abc news deputy political director averi harper. averi, good morning. so it seems like liz cheney could be voted out of her leadership post this week. so what does that say about the grip that donald trump still has on the gop? >> well, dan, it says that that grip is so tight on the party. he is still the leader of the party even though he is no longer in office. you have to remember the only reason why cheney is going to be ousted from her role as the republican conference chair is because she continues to speak out against president trump. not only did she call out the election lies, but she lso called them dangerous to the republican party and to democracy itself, and so now we're seeing this push for congresswoman elise stefanik to take her place amid concerns that she's not conservative enough, but one thing matters. she's a trump loyalist, and she has the endorsement of the former president. >> it looks like liz cheney could be paying the price. let me ask you about something

else that's coming up this week. there is a meeting set between republicans in congress and democrats in congress to talk about areas of potential collaboration going forward. given however that the senate minority leader, the republican leader in the senate, mitch mcconnell, recently talked about, quote, stopping the biden administration, what are the odds of bipartisan cooperation going forward on things like infrastructure or children's education? >> right. those comments really harken back to the obama years when mcconnell talked about making obama a one-term president. so this is a far cry from the republican epiphany that biden said would happen once trump was out of office. so in terms of negotiation on infrastructure, look, biden says he's open to it, but we'll see what happens. the fact is that republicans have a much narrower interpretation of what infrastructure is than democrats so there's a long way before that plan could ket t e bipartisansh io before w avi,want to point t thisirst

mississippi as well, but the rains go all the way up into the ohio river valley, pennsylvania, and eventually towards the northeast. not the prettiest of days across parts of the northeast, and this is where the rough weather will be, from memphis through lufkin, texas. damaging winds, large hail, the possibility of seeing a tornado as well, and heavy rain in some of these areas that have seen a lot of rain the last couple of weeks. so they're sat we have offshore winds gusts 30 to 35 miles an hour and 71 in the city and breezy throughout the afternoon and 76 in oakland and 86 up in santa rosa and 82 in san jose and accu weather seven day forecast it's mom's day.day forecast it doesn't matter what the weather is on mother's day, right? it just doesn't.

the scene after a shooting incident saturday afternoon right outside this studio right here in times square. two women and a 4-year-old child were shot and hospitalized. they are all expected to survive. police say they're looking for the shooter and another person of interest. they say the whole thing started as a fight among a small group of men. also right now, the ncaa could enact a rule change that would allow college athletes to make money from the use of their names, images and likenesses as soon as july 1st. currently the ncaa doesn't allow athletes to profit financially with the exception of scholarships and educational stipends. here's a sad story a lot of pet owners can relate to. former president barack obama and former first lady michelle obama paying tribute to their dog bo, announcing he lost his battle with cancer. mr. obama tweeting photos of him with bo at the white house saying he was exactly what we needed and more than we ever we will miss him dearly. we begin this half hour with

a closer look at one of the latest police-involved shootings. 16-year-old ma'khia bryant was shot and killed by a columbus, ohio, police officer as she allegedly swung a knife at another woman. now bryant's younger sister who watched that whole scene unfold spoke to me about what led up to her making that 911 call for help and why they were trying to get out of that foster home in the first place. >> 911, where is your emergency? >> these grown girls over here trying to fight us, trying to stab us, and trying to put their hands on our grandma. get here now. >> reporter: these were the last moments of 16-year-old ma'khia bryant's young life. >> this is my sister and, like, we were planning to do things together that we're not ever going to be able to do anymore because she's done. >> reporter: a neighbor's security camera shows the fight that spilled out of the columbus, ohio, foster home where ma'khia and her 15-year-old sister ja'niah bryant were reportedly staying.

they were arguing with two adult women who had been at a party there before, started over cleaning the home while the foster mom was at work. ja'niah says she called their grandmother for help before eventually dialing 911. >> ma'am, do you see any weapons? >> no! >> reporter: police body camera video shows the moment the police officer pulled up. ma'khia rushing toward the women with a knife in hand. the officer gets out of his car and fires his weapon killing her. the family waiting for the police investigation to be completed. >> do you think in some ways your sister that day was trying to protect you? >> she was being a bigger sister. she was trying to protect herself, you know. it's very complicated, but, you know, at the end of the day, this is still my sister, you know? this is still my family taken away from me.hurt. >> reporter: this wasn't the first call to help ja'niah had made. about a month before on march

>> how do you want people to view your sister? what do you want them to know about her and who she was? >> she liked to joke around. she also could dance really well, so we would tend to have dance battles. she loved her hair. she loved doing hair. she would do my hair sometimes and stuff like that. she loved playing in makeup. we really had a tight bond. >> very close sisters, and we've reached out to child social services. we did not hear back. ja'niah is now living with her grandmother, which is where the girls had hoped to be all along. ultimately the family hopes to spark change. so what happened to ma'khia doesn't happen to any other kid. >> and the fact that she made the 911 call asking for help, and then it all led to that. i yeah, d>> telling ierview. >> s, years old. >> yep.
