building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc7 news. a bisbee day for firefighters as wind, combine would dry conditions whipped up fires. several parts of the bay area remain under a red flag warning for another 24 hours. the last time we saw a red flag warning in may was seven years ago. good morning, it sunday, may 9. i am liz kreutz. happy mother's day. we are going to start with a look at the weather with lisa argen who is tracking the red flag warning and what we can expect today. good morning. have happy mother hfs day. >> thank you, i hope everyone is planning on having a nice afternoon for mother's day, although it remains challenging with the red flag warning and the lack of fog. the sea breeze only at the coast. there is live doppler 7, a red flag warning through 6:00 monday morning. winds have been lighter butter

up elevations, 20-30 mile gusts. the parts we are really concerned about will be gurnville, sonoma county, napa, and mt. diablo, 22 north wind gusts. st. helena, 30 miles an hour. little haze, relative humidity is up a bit due to a weak system over the ridge. 54 in san francisco, 67 in mountain view with 62 in san jose, and of course emeryville, sunny skies, 67 in santa rose aw 70 nuvaudo . 2-7 degrees morning this morning, 70 by the delta. for the rest of the day, a warm and breezy one around the bay, and inland, with 70s and 80s coming into play by noon time. but it will stay comfortable at the coast. winds up to 20 there. but those offshore winds will be watching them, the relative humidity continues to drop throughout the next 24 hours as our red flag warning continues. so, we will talk about the warmer weather tomorrow, even though the winds will be

cooperating a little bit. liz? >> thank you. a home in east oakland has been completely destroyed in a fire near 17th street around 8:30 last night. crews were able to contain the two-alarm fire in an hour. the residents were able to safely evacuate with no injuries and an investigation into the cause is under way. pg&e was calld to inspect wires but power has been restored in the area. a shed and multiple vehicles were also burned. san jose feerts battled two fires near golf courses before 8:30 last night this fire broke out near the san jose municipal golf course, it burned three acres. firefighters say it burned through a couple homeless encampments and several oak trees. nobody was hurt. crews got the fire under control within a few hours. in the afternoon a fire burned about 2 acres near lose lagos golf course. firefighters got it under control pretty quickly as well.

in solano county it didn't take much for a spark to quickly turn to a dangerous wildfire. the fire started lopes road near benicia, the winds that triggered a red flag warning helped push it to 45 acres. abc7 news was there. >> reporter: i was nervous, running around, i locked up one dog because he was antsy. >> reporter: anthony wright called 911 the moment he saw smokes and flames near his property in benicia. minutes later the fire was making a run up the hill, fueled by acres of dry grass. cal-fire calling extra ground crews and air support to fight it. air tankers make ing a low altitude attack, dropping fire retardant. >> eucalyptus caught fire after the field caught fire, and i thought it was going to domino effect. they got it. >> reporter: anthony's uncle mike grabbed what he could to try and put the fire out. >> had a hose and fire

extinguisher, drug it from our well, because our well is in the back where it started. just drug it back there and started spraying. >> reporter: strong winds were no match. >> given northern wind conditions we have experienced and the drier conditions, the fire took off rapidly, over the ridge, got to heavier brush, we augment would additional resources. >> i was trying to cut the grass down. >> reporter: rosenberg rodriguez believes he accidentally started the fire while cutting tall grass on his riding lawn mower. >> i get with the lawn mower, that thing spark and that is how it started. >> reporter: firefighters say one spark is all it takes during red flag warning fire conditions. >> it is keeping me up at night, to be honest with you. hopefully home owners are doing their due diligence. >> reporter: anthony has seen fires near his home before, and he is ready for another long summer. >> like one month ago, all green, now all golden state, dry, but the fires are real bad. >> reporter: a grass fire this

large so early in the season has firefighters concerned. it is hot, it is dry, it feels like june or july, but of course it sewnly may. despite what we heard from the home owner, cal' fire says it is still investigating the cause of the fire, but they do say using lawn mower should be avoided during a red flag warning alert. abc7 news. in the north bay this early start to fire season has many residents on edge there. they have been through fires before, but not this early. abc7 news reporter luz pena spoke to a family who survived the tubbs fire. >> reporter: the family's memories and and years of sacrifice gone. >> that is my husband, he is looking for any souvenirs or something that may have been spared, but unfortunately nothing was found. >> reporter: in october of 2017, carla's parents woke up to their

naeshd engulfed in flames. almost four years later we are experiencing a red flag warning, two months ahead of what firefighters anticipated. >> it is hard to bring it up to my parents. but i think we all know it is here. but we don't really like to talk about it, but i know it is in the back of all of our minds. >> reporter: the warning has been in effect since 11:00 p.m. friday and will go until 6:00 a.m. monday. humidity and high temperatures in the upper 80s, playing a key role. >> this county has been through a lot. the red flag warning and information we are putting out is not intendd to scare people. it is to make sure people understand what the conditions are, and are taking the preventative proactive measures. >> reporter: this time around, santa rosa is better equipped for wildfires. >> the improvements, alert and warning systems, and network of cameras that monitor communities now have really enhanced our ability to respond to wildfires. >> reporter: to them, this is their new home. >> at first we didn't want to rebuild this home, because we

always knew it would still be a problem, but my dad, he always made sure to tell us that when he came into this country, he wanted to make sure that he left for his nephews and nieces and for us that he was resilient. >> reporter: if you look around fountain grove you see reminders of october 2017 at every turn. the fire station once standing, still gone. but in hopes of healing, neighbors are slowly coming back. how many of your neighbors decided not to come back to this neighborhood? >> i would say most of them. i mean, there is about three that have been rebuilding. there is a home over there that is still in the process of being rebuilt but doesn't seem it will finish. i would say out of 30 houses, only three have come back. >> reporter: in santa rosa, luz pena, abc7 news. >> the abc7 news app is one way to stay on top of wildfires during fire season. we sent out this alert about the fire in solano county yesterday,

just before noon. when you download the app, enable notifications. part of abc7's effort to build a better bay area amcludes tracking how the economy is doing, as businesses rebound from the pandemic. san francisco bars are welcoming back patrons indoors for the first weekend in over a year. bars that don't serve food reopened last week as the county moved into the yellow tier. capacity is limited to 25%. abc7 was in north beach as patrons knocked back a few at the showdown. the bar manager echoed their excitement. >> having people sit inside and seeing familiar faces is definitely-- a bit overwhelming but it is nice, finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. feels good. >> reporter: masks are still required inside, except when actively eating or drinking. san francisco is the first bay area county to move into the least restrictive tier. lets get a check of the forecast outside. >> well, it is warming up quick again, liz, with already 70s by

peninsula. >> reporter: this morning, part of this massive rocket launched by china days ago has come back to earth. footage passing over japan before reentry circulating on social media. >> this is the second largest uncontrolled reentry in the last couple decades. >> reporter: the portion of the rocket weighed 23 tons was 10 stories tall, and hit speeds of 18,000 miles an hour. the rocket reentering the earth's atmosphere late saturday over the arabian peninsula. chinese authorities say most of it broke up upon reentry. man-made space debris has fallen before, though it is usually small or not on land. in march, a piece from a space x rocket landed on someone's property in washington state, and in 199 saeb, loty williams from tulsa, oklahoma, became the first known person to be hit by space junk while walking through a park. >> looked like fire, it was this big ball of fire.

couldn't see anything, couldn't hear anything, you didn't smell something. >> reporter: fortunately she was not hurt by the six-inch chunk. christine sloan, abc news, new york. new developments in a raresator saturday session, the alameda city council voted on police reforms . abc7 news reporter matt boone said they were rushed for approval after the death of mario gonzalez in police custody last month. >> reporter: a disclaimer mayor ashcraft. >> this is not specifically about the mario gonzalez incident that happened in our city. >> reporter: mario died after an encounter with alameda police on april 19th, when they were called by neighbor whose reported him looking disoriented or drunk in a park. police body cam footage showed gonzalez pinned on his stomach, being kneeled on by police before going limp. police initially described his death as the result of a medical naerjs, but it is now under

investigation by three separate agencies, it prompted the city to speed up its discussion on police reform, especially in non-criminal or mental health-related situations. >> we have been working at this almost a year now hoping to get this prior to the end of the fiscal year. >> reporter: that was vice mayor malia referring to infact the city created community-lead work group for recommendations on the issue after the death of george floyd last may. the public commenters were quick to point that out. >> instead of swift acagainst the department oriented towards harming black and brown residents, some of you punted and some of you did not keep the commitments you voteed for then. >> reporter: one of the commenter uzwas rebecca ruiz part of mental health first which provides mental health crisis hotline a part of anti-police terror praunlect. >> our purpose is to eliminate

the need for law enforcement, and mental health crisis first response by providing mobile care support, de-escalation assistance, non-punitive resources, interventions. >> reporter: she urged the council to create a community-lead non-police response tactic. in the end, the council voted to immediately begin routing some 911 calls for mental health and non-criminal situations to the fire department and paramedics, directing city staff oo come up with more long-term, non-police option. they voteed for staff to come back with revised use of force guidelines set and potential nish noofb be placed on the 2022 ballot that would create police oversight commission. all of this, they hope to fievenlalize by the end of june. matt boone, abc7 news. san francisco 's district attorney announced hate crime charges for the man accused of two unprovoked assaults on asian americans saying there is new evidence the attacks, including this targeting an asian father pushing a troller, were racially

motivated. police arrested 26-year-old sydney hammond after the incident in mission bay last week and he faces aggravated assault for an attack on a 61-year-old man in the tenderloin. as the bay area experiences a spike in crimes against the aapi community, santa clara is providing a pathway to become allies. there was a virtual workshop to teach bystanders whau to do if they witness verbal harassment, how to safely de-escalate and provide support in solidarity to the person being targeted. the city of santa clara partnered with council on american islamic relations for this event. part of building a better bay area is fighting for racial and social justice. while we don't have all the answers, we do have lot of vetted local resources that can help. to find more about how you can take action and be an ally, head to abc7news.com/takeaction. in the north bay sir

francis drake high school could be renamed after famous alum, archie williams, a committee is recommended the name but it must be approved by the school district. williams was born in oak lnld attended uc berkeley and won a gold medal at the 1936 summer olympic in berlin. he was also one of the first black pilots in world war ii. later williams was a teacher and coach at sir francis drake high school. the high school decided to change names last year because sir francis drake was associated with the slave trade. great entertainment has always been a part of aids walk san francisco and a bigger focus now that the event is searchual. glide ensemble gave us a sample of the songs they will sing one week from today. the choir has been performing at the post-walk party ♪ >> aids walk san francisco is the west coast's largest and

clear, and a quick warm up again at the beach. beautiful view in santa cluz, you will be well into the upper 70s today. it is 59 downtown, 60 in oakland. mountain view, good morning at 67. 62 in san jose. 55 half moon bay. the golden gate bridge, very nice. the sea breeze today making it comfortable with the winds up to 20 miles an hour. 70 in novaudo. 68 in napa, fairfield, relative humidity 30% right now and yesterday was in the teens. 68 in concord, 64 in livermore. here is a look at winds, not as strong right now as they were yesterday. but they will continue to gust to over 40 miles an hour possible. mt. tam, 24 mauer diablo. and mt. st. helena 33 miles an hour. with little bit more relative humidity, we have that weak system moving over the ridge, and that will keep numbers from getting too warm.

that happens tomorrow. we look at our view from san francisco, clear and mild this morning, the red flag warning through early monday, cooler weather for everyone as we get into the middle of the week. as for the winds, once again they will be with us, breezy to gusty as we get through the afternoon, especially along the marine county coastline. winds 10-25 miles an hour will be common throughout the afternoon. then into early munldy they get lighter, but high pressure builds and that will create still dry condition s. here we are, 3:00, 9% relative humidity in fairfield. 21% santa rosa. through the 8:00 hour, it is still low by the delta, but we will see our humidity recover into early monday. look what happens by the afternoon, we are back even drier due to the warm up. in fact, the high builds and we will see more 90s all around the bay into our monday, tuesday still looks hot inland. there is a look at monday. mid 90s. around the bay and coast it will be warm but we get the sea

of the east bay winds get breezy throughout the afternoon. right now it is about quickly-warming temperatures and upper elevation winds that are gusting from 20 to 34 miles an hour. it is a little less than yesterday, but with the warmth and the winds increasing throughout the day, we will see temperatures above average and high fire danger the next 24 hours. 62 in san jose, 52 in san francisco. a nice view of the city, where we have a sea breeze keeping temperatures in 60s, but fairfield and novato 70, 68 in concord. we go through the afternoon and temperatures warm quickly through the 80s by noontime inland. we are still in the 60s to even 50s at the shoreline, and getting patchy fog tonight, but it is another dry aft we will talk about our cool down next. developing news, less than a week before the freakness

stakes medina spirit has failed a post-race drug test. hall of fame trainer bob baffert said the horse was found to have 21pico grams of a steroid, double the legal limit. he has denied wrong doing and said he did not know how medina spirit could have tested sxfb said medina spirit has never been on that steroid. >> i got the biggest gut punch in racing, for something that i didn't do. >> he says medina spirit has not been officially disqualified from the kentucky derby. churchill downs released a statement saying if medina spirit's results are upheld it will be invalidated and mandloon will be the winner. new concerns about people getting together in large gatherings. today's worry, mother's day. abc7 reporter has more.
