overnight growing concern about the number of gas stations running on "e" stemming from that cyberattack on a pipeline that supplies nearly half the fuel on the east coast. >> i went to like six different stations. nobody has any gas. >> reporter: an analyst for gas buddy says 40% of metro atlanta gas stations were without fuel. in metro raleigh, north carolina, that number 50%, wilmington, more than 60% of stations reportedly without gas. >> this is potentially the most substantial and damaging attack on u.s. critical infrastructure ever. >> reporter: gas stations in at least seven states are reporting shortages from florida to virginia and supply issues appear to be creeping north. according to bloomberg distributors say they're now getting gas on a rationed basis in linden, new jersey, where the 5500-mile critical pipeline ends. a cyberattack five days ago forced its operator colonial pipeline to shut down the pipeline causingho >> it wa96o 98 all, but it's pot

of the week it could go up another three to seven cents. it's the law of supply and demand. >> reporter: colonial is expected to decide today whether it can fully restart the pipeline, but it could take days to reach places because experts say the fuel moves only five miles per hour through the pipeline. energy secretary jennifer granholm asking people not to panic buy. >> much as there was no cause for, say, hoarding toilet paper at the beginning of the pandemic, there should be no cause for hoarding gasoline. >> reporter: the fbi identified the group responsible for the attack as darkside, a gang of hackers based in russia in a brazen scheme to extort money. u.s. intelligence has not yet tied the russian government to the attack, but former homeland security adviser tom bossert says the kremlin has done little to stop these cybercriminals. >> the russian government doesn't want to take them down. they have a long pattern of allowing and sometimes helping the organizations like these,

like darkside, that disrupt the west. it pleases them. their interests align. >> reporter: one congressman is demanding the government regulate cryptocurrency, which these hackers often demand. the other big story this morning, congresswoman liz cheney's last stand just hours before she's expected to lose her leadership position. she blasted former president trump blaming him for misinforming millions of americans about the election and saying our freedom will only last if we protect it. abc's alex presha has more on that this morning. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, mona. yeah, cheney was the highest ranking republican that voted to impeach then president trump but now four months after the january 6 insurrection, she's likely to be voted out of her leadership role. ahead of today's vote that's all but certain to kick her out of republican leadership, congresswoman liz cheney stood at a half empty house chamber tuesday night repeating the words that led to this moment. >> today we face a threat america has never seen before, a

former president who provoked a violent attack on this capitol in an effort to steal the election has resumed his aggressive effort to convince americans that the election was stolen from him. >> reporter: cheney, the number three republican in the house, not backing down. >> remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar. i will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president's crusade to undermine our democracy. >> reporter: the wyoming congresswoman won't be ousted over policy. she's voted with former president trump more than 90% of the time. instead she faces replacement over continuing to call trump out and had this warning. >> he risks inciting further violence. >> reporter: but other top republicans say that's the wrong message. >> for us to win in 2022 and 2024, we need everybody. >> reporter: a letter sent by leader kevin mccarthy urged

members to kick cheney out of leadership saying, it's clear we need to make a change. >> do you support elise stefanik for that job? >> yes, i do. >> reporter: gop leadership has backed a trump endorsed replacement new york congresswoman elise stefanik. stefanik objected to certifying the presidential results but her confirmation could be delayed by some who think she's not conservative enough. in a memo obtained by abc news, house freedom caucus member representative chip roy says, we should either someone who reflect our values or perhaps leave the spot vacant. we expect them to vote in the secret ballot to oust cheney from leadership but we do not expect a second vote that would elevate stefanik to replace her. at least not today. andrew and mona. >> alex, thank you. in the middle east air raid sirens and explosions were heard through the night as israel's military and palestinian militants escalated their attacks against each other. israel says it's been targeted

by more than 650 rockets in more than two days while the palestinians say more than 30 people in gaza have died including children. dramatic video shows the moment a 13-story building collapsed. israel says it bombed that building because militants kept offices there. this is the worst violence since 2014 and abc's matt gutman says it could get worse. >> reporter: israel is on war footing. the military says it has called up thousands of reservists. for a time flights were diverted from israeli airspace. really for the first time in a generation there is violence on multiple fronts, not just in gaza and in jerusalem but also in mixed arab/jewish towns inside israel proper. >> one reason behind the violence is the outrage among palestinians over families in jerusalem being evicted. a court will rule on the issue soon. turning to the pandemic, more states are starting to provide vaccines to children as young as 12. meanwhile, the head of the cdc is under growing pressure after tense moments on capitol hill.

republican lawmakers blasted the director of the cdc over the agency's covid guidelines that remain in place even as more americans get vaccinated. >> i always considered the cdc to be the gold standard. i don't anymore. >> reporter: senator susan collins calling the cdc's guidelines conflicting and confusing. >> so here we have unnecessary barriers to re-opening schools, exaggerating the risks of outdoor transmission. >> reporter: senator bill cassidy joining collins expressing frustration. >> this is a blanket, walk outside and wear a mask. you're vaccinated and everybody else in the room is vaccinated but you're wearing a mask. >> reporter: the criticism coming after "the new york times" called out the cdc for claiming there's a 10% risk of covid transmission outdoors. experts in the report insist that number is closer to 1%. "the times" writer saying, the cdc's claim is like saying,

sharks attack fewer than 20,000 swimmers a year, both true and deceiving. back on capitol hill, dr. rochelle walensky explained the difficulty of issuing guidelines for the entire country with different regional case rates and she got personal when talking about her kids and summer camp. >> i have a 16-year-old. every day -- every year he comes home from camp and he writes the number of days until he returns to camp the next year. this year it got to zero, and i told him he wasn't going. i want our kids back in camp. we now have 38,000 new infections on average per day. last may 11th it was 24,000. and we sent a lot of kids home and camps were closed. the camp guidance is intended to get our kids to camp and allow them to stay there. >> reporter: president biden has promised to get more aggressive when it comes to offering new guidance for people who are vaccinated. >> i think the cdc is taking kind of a slow and steady approach to relaxing these guidelines, and i think that's appropriate. >> reporter: and in south carolina the governor has issued a new order allowing parents to

decide whether their child wears a mask in school. a developing story from memphis, the interstate 40 bridge spanning the mississippi river is closed because of a crack. a routine inspection found the crack in the bridge truss. boat traffic was also halted. it comes as president biden meets today with members of congress to discuss his infrastructure plan. time now for a look at your wednesday weather. time-lapsed video shows a funnel cloud forming about 100 miles from houston, a severe thunderstorm hit the area but no reports of damage. more rain is expected there today. conditions will be more severe along the gulf coast where thunderstorms could drop another three inches of rain. more flooding is possible. there's also light rain and snow in the northern rockies. checking today's high temperatures, 70s on the west coast, 60s from texas to new england, 89 in miami. 99 in phoenix.

at a v.a. hospital was sentenced for the murders of seven patients. the judge calling her a monster. abc's megan tevrizian has more. >> reporter: this morning, a former nursing assistant who killed seven elderly veterans at a v.a. medical center in west virginia has been sentenced to life in prison. 46-year-old reta mays pleaded guilty to seven counts of second degree murder for intentionally injecting patients with lethal doses of insulin in 2017 and 2018. the judge sentenced mays tuesday to seven life sentences calling her the worst kind of monster adding, you're the monster that no one sees coming. you've made liars out of anyone who has told their kids monsters don't exist. >> i mean, there's a lot of things a lot of us heard for the first time. some of the things she had done and some things that the judge said during the, you know, his speech at the end. we didn't realize. >> reporter: william edge, the son of mays' first victim learning in court that during
