could be a bigger problem than we thought. shot at a million. the stunning new million dollar prize being offered just to get people vaccinated against covid, plus the big step today to vaccinate children. plus, the "american idol" finalist now off the show because of something he did when he was 12 years old. a fish story like we've never seen, and now it's come full circle. and a whole new kind of coffee that's more friendly towards the environment, but how does it taste? good thursday morning, everyone. we begin with the restart of that critical fuel pipeline targeted by hackers. >> the desperate search for gas is not over. anxious drivers waiting in long lines are draining supplies, and many others across the southeast are struggling to find a gas station that hasn't run out of fuel. >> overnight we learned about a red flag that was raised years ago warning that security at tat pipeline company and now president biden has signed an executive order to address the issue, but first we look at the

rush to find gas. this morning, drivers across the south are rushing to gas stations to fill up whatever they can. >> y'all, that is a water bottle. a water bottle. >> tiffany. >> a water bottle. >> reporter: even water bottles. the consumer product safety commission now warning people to use only containers approved for fuel. in alabama a couple was seen filling up at least seven gas cans in the back of their suv. >> oh. >> reporter: in north carolina this fight breaking out after witnesses say the woman tried to cut the line. drivers are even lining up where there's no gas shortage like here in ft. lauderdale. experts call it a classic case of panic buying. >> i think a lot of people are topping their tank because they're worried because they don't really understand the situation. they know that there's a problem with the pipeline, but they don't really understand what it

means. >> reporter: it follows the shutdown of that critical pipeline which carries 100 million barrels of fuel to the east coast every day. colonial restarted its pipeline yesterday, five days after russia linked hackers forced them to shut it down. supply problems have resulted in thousands of gas stations from florida to virginia running out of fuel. >> how many gas stations have you tried? >> eight. >> this is my sixth. everything is like out of gas. >> reporter: overnight analysts say more than 70% of gas stations in metro atlanta were out of fuel and the same percentage for the entire state of north carolina. in durham county people are being asked to work remotely to save gas until further notice. tracking site gas buddy says fewer shortages are expected today, and gradual improvement is likely in the next 48 hours but the demand is already fueling a spike in prices now topping $3 a gallon for the first time since 2014 with price gouging rampant. the price at this station in virginia, $6.99 a gallon.

>> six gallons of gas for $35. that's absolutely ridiculous. >> reporter: in the meantime, new revelations about security at the pipeline company. the associated press reports an audit three years ago found glaring deficiencies. the firm that conducted the audit saying, quote, an eighth grader could have hacked into m. in response, colonial says its workers are constantly assessing and improving our security practices, both physical and digital. colonial has not said how they gained access to its network or if a ransom was paid. president biden has signed an executive order to improve cybersecurity that calls for better information sharing between the government and private sector and establishes a cybersafety review board. breaking overnight, israel has been hitting targets in gaza claiming progress against palestinian militants. the israelis say their air strikes have killed as many as ten senior leaders from militant group hamas. missile strikes took down two more high-rise towers in gaza. israel claims they housed hamas

facilities. around 70 palestinians have been killed and 7 in israel, children among the victims on both sides. another major concern, violent street clashes across israel. in one case a jewish mob dragged an arab driver from his car and beat him. abc's matt gutman is in tel aviv. >> reporter: i spoke with israeli military officials. they said they're assessing the situation on an hourly basis, and they say they have not ruled out a ground invasion of gaza, but they say they are not there yet. and in those towns with mixed arab/jewish populations, the israeli government declaring what is basically martial law, which could possibly increase tensions, as well. >> meanwhile, the u.s. is working to de-escalate tensions. secretary of state antony blinken has spoken to palestinian president mahmoud abbas, but abbas has little influence in gaza. new details about the mysterious ailment known as havana syndrome. "the new york times" reports that 130 americans who served

overseas have been affected prompting the biden administration to step up its investigation. some people have suffered long-term brain injuries after experiencing the phenomenon, which involves sound waves, pressure or heat. the initial cases were in china and cuba but some of the latest cases were in europe. one involved a military officer and his son. intelligence officials have not determined if the incidents are attacks. some claim russia is to blame. now to the pandemic and a big new incentive to get vaccinated, $1 million. that's what one state is now offering in hopes of getting more shots into arms. abc's alex presha is here to tell us how we get that million dollars. alex, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrew. look, we've seen a lot of incentives to get vaccinated from free beers to doughnuts, even baseball tickets. but now getting vaccinated could make you a millionaire. this morning vaccinated people in ohio are getting a shot at a massive payout. the state is giving five adults $1 million each in return

for getting at least one dose of the vaccine. >> to be eligible to win, you must be at least 18 years of age or older on the day of the drawing. you must be an ohio resident and you must be vaccinated before the drawing. >> reporter: federal coronavirus relief funds will be used for the prizes. ohio congressman jim jordan, a frequent critic of covid restrictions, tweeting, we've gone from 15 days to $1 million if you get the covid-19 vaccine. give me a break. >> only in this country do we have to beg people to take a miracle drug. >> reporter: the incentive comes as more americans are now eligible for the vaccine. today major pharmacies will begin offering shots to kids as young as 12. these 14-year-old twins already got shares. >> i thought it would hurt, but it didn't hurt at all. >> i think honestly the benefits outweigh the side effects. >> reporter: meanwhile, a growing covid mystery for the new york yankees. the team says seven staff members have now tested positive for the virus even though they were all vaccinated. >> we've always known that the

vaccines are not 100% effective, and i know that the yankees themselves said they were starting to relax a little bit around each other, so i think they need to tighten up a little bit of the masking and distancing when they're not playing. >> reporter: and as more americans get vaccinated, the cdc is under pressure to relax guidelines on masks. the cdc director saying last ou the interstate 40 bridge linking tennessee and arkansas could take months to repair. officials released photos of the crack that forced the bridge to close. a local congressman says it shows the urgent need to fix the country's infrastructure. president biden met with congressional leaders yesterday to discuss his infrastructure plan. republicans said they'll refuse to raise any taxes to pay for it. biden speaking to msnbc last night said, he may suggest more audits of wealthy americans. police in northern california have arrested an 11-year-old and 17-year-old for attacking and robbing an elderly asian man in his driveway. police say the 11-year-old

was behind the wheel of the getaway car which had been hijacked. now they're looking into other crimes the pair may have committed. time now for a look at your thursday morning weather. brush fire burning in bone dry conditions 75 miles from los angeles. it destroyed at least two homes and forced 100 people to evacuate. no injuries have been reported. more dry conditions are expected there today. in fact, there's very little rain across the country today. only some showers in the plains, the northern rockies and in florida. clear skies everywhere else. checking today's high temperatures, around 70 from kansas city to boston and 70s along the west coast and 102 degrees in phoenix. coming up, the growing mystery over the missing tiger in texas. but first nearly everything is getting more expensive, and now wall street is getting worried. we take a closer look. and two planes collide in
