the unexpected guest in a bay area

a live black bear has caused quite the commotion in this sleepy north bay neighborhood. no masks inside if fully vaxed? caught in the act. fremont police say they arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman. why there could be more victims. forecast is coming up. abc 7 news at 11:00 starts right now. building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. we're in the backthe bear. we have eyes on it. >> what an evening. after about two hours of

captivating a north bay neighborhood and abc 7 news viewers, a bear has left a backyard. but san anselmo neighbors should still be cautious. the bear moved to the open space area tonight. police say for the next 24 to 48 hours, people should keep any trash or pets inside. the bear was spotted in the 1000 block of temple pious avenue. we begin with abc 7 reporter liz who was right there in the thick of it. >> are you kidding? a bear in san anselmo? >> it's scary, but also really exciting. >> reporter: when i showed up around 5:30 tonight, there were crowds of people outside already trying to catch a glimpse of this black bear that was up in this tree here behind me. the owners of the home that i'm in right now, they're the ones who called 911. >> nigh next st coupys ago

and sent me a text message and said is it normal that there's a bear in the tree? i went outside and saw the bear, called 911. police department showed up fairly quickly. >> reporter: it took a couple hours for california fish and wildlife to get here, so central marin police officers were in the backyard trying to keep the bear up in the tree. they were banging pots and pans to scare it and get it up there. they didn't want it to get down and start roaming the streets. in that time, several people gathered to try and see this bear. a bear ere's town bear in ross and statues. but no. >> reporter: eventually california fish and wildlife arrived here in this neighborhood and that is when they asked people to stay inside their homes and shelter in place. they asked folks who had been

watching to stay away. that's when they tried to get the bear to safely come down. eventually it did and dan picks up the tense minutes here. the bear made its way from tree. you see police here, the marin humane society. the bear went through had year. the home owner said he heard the bear climb the fence and now he's made his way to the base of the mountain. they say that's good news. >> marin police say bear sightings are uncommon in the county. there have only been two or three bear sightings in marin since 2003. we sent this push alert just before 6:00 tonight. we're streaming live coverage of the bear on our abc news app. what a scene that was today. let's move to our other top story tonight. in a sign that life re is

the cdc t need to wear masks in most situations. >> anyone who is fully vaccinated can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, large or small, without wearing a mask or physical distancing. >> to be clear here, california hasn't yet signed off on these new guidelines. kate spoke with business owners and employees in san francisco about this major change. >> i take it off at home and that's it. >> reporter: despite the new guidelines, many san francisco san franciscans n fr not so sure. masks are still required on planes, trains, buss and in hospitals. but inside businesses, people could let their masks down if local health departments adopt

the thing that everybody doesn't like though is the cdc seems like they're changing their recommendations hourly and nobody can keep up with it. >> i think a lot of it is mental. we lived without a mask for our whole lives so we should be able to get back to. >> reporter: both agencies using it as an opportunity to encourage more people to get vaccinated since that's how you lose the mask. abc 7 news. now listen to this, the nation's second largest grocery chain says it will still require everyone to wear mask inside its ste. so encouragg cial distancing and hand washing. home depot and starbucks also say they will keep their policies mandating shoppers and employees wear masks. walgreens and macy's say they

are reviewing their mask requirements. cvs says the same. today for the first time, kids as young as 12 could get vaccinated in the bay area. parents say when word got out that a vaccine clinic would be open outside berkeley high school, they were flying. >> it's going to nice to be able to see people again and hug people and stuff. >> i've been really wanting it. >> reporter: how about your friends? >> they've also been really wanting it. >> appointments were not required at the berkeley site, but they were required here at 6 flags hurricane harbor in concord. in the east bay, a man is under arrest tonight after police say they caught him sexually assaulting a senior woman in fremont. it was one of two attacks reported today in the area.

as matt boon explains, they believe there could be more victims. >> reporter: around 11:00 of police cars. came in, knocked my door. >> reporter: it was only later he learned what police were investigating, the sexual assault of a 67-year-old asian woman. >> i was horrified. this is fairly a quiet neighborhood and i didn't expect something that bad. >> i would say shocking is probably an understatement. >> reporter: sergeant recardo cortez says when officers got there, the woman was still being assaulted. >> it was obvious when the officers arrived on scene what was happening felt. >> reporter: the man has been identified as 28-year-old alexander lomax. he was also identified in an incident earlier in the morning

about a le. won walkg in the area told investigators she was thrown to the ground while the man attempted to sexual assault her, but he was by a bystander. because of this, police believe there could be more victims. >> sexual assault doesn't always get reported. we want to hear from you. we want to make sure this person is held accountable for everything he has done. >> reporter: in fremont, abc 7 news. fbi agents were in oakland today as they ramp up efforts to combat hate crimes. they say attacks have increased recently. they're asking victims to come forward but know that can be easier said than done. >> they may have a fear or distrust of law enforcement. they may have fear due to their immigration status. or fear of retribution. >> the fbi has a social media campaign encouraging people to

june 2nd. police say he was crouched down. it turned out to be a hammer. in july, solano county district attorney recused herself from the case. >> to not only restore public trust, preserve the safety of our community, but also provide confidence in the outcome. >> reporter: until now, the 15 general has declined to investigate the shooting. >> what is needed is a fair and complete and impartial, thorough and transparent review. >> reporter: new attorney general rob bonta announced the california department of justice will conduct an independent review to determine whether criminal charges should be filed, something sean monterrosa's sisters have been advocating for all along. >> my mom's birthday was yesterday, so this was almost like a birthday gift to her.

pitman was shot. >> reporter: police were tracking three suspects as part of a burglary investigation. one of the suspects was 23-year- old xavier pitman. as a plain-clothes officer moved in to make an arrest, they both fell to the ground and the officer shot pitman in the wrist. san francisco police chief bill scott says even the officer apologies. >> the officer asked me to convey through his attorney how badly he feels that this happened. he did not intend for his gun to go off and he apologies to mr. pitman. >> this is xavier pitman's mother. basically my son is disabled for the rest of his life due to your officer accidentally shooting his gun. >> it should not have happened and we are sorry. >> reporter: but not everyone

has sympathy for pitman. >> the streets need to be safer and it's not safe. it's about accountability. >> now, police are still looking for the two men that were with pitman. governor newsom unveiled what he's calling the largest relief -- this includes $4 billion in grants, some $100 million to promote efforts to bring tourists back to california and an expansion of an ongoing tax credit for businesses. >> small businesses like small hotels intimately understand the pain and stress of the last year, directly understand it and the struggle now to reopen with all of the dust settling around us. >> more details will come tomorrow when the governor releases his revised budget

afternoon as the wind picks up. you will see sunshine. still a mix of sun and low level clouds along the coast and the southern end of our viewing area. if you have to travel early in the day, make sure you give yourself a little extra time. 40s, 50s and that drizzle could measure. as we take a look at the afternoon highs, a lot like today. low 80s inland with a nice sea breeze. and up to 60s, 70s, along the bay side communities. you're looking at that mix of sun and clouds. winds picking up, blustery around the coast. inland areas up to 25, 30 miles per hour. that continues into tomorrow night. i want to show you what's going to happen with an area of low pressure moving down. tomorrow night, we're going to bring in a little more drizzle heading into saturday morning.
