this sleepy north bay neighborhood. no masks inside if fully vaxed? caught in the act. fremont police say they arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman. why there could be more victims. forecast is coming up. abc 7 news at 11:00 starts right now. building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. we're in the backyard of the neighbor's home next to the bear. we have eyes on it. >> what an evening. after about two rtws s, bear has a . t san should still be cautious. the bear moved to the open space area tonight. police say for the next 24 to 48 hours, people should keep

any trash or pets inside. the bear was spotted in the 1010 block of temple pious avenue. we begin with abc 7 reporter liz who was right there in the thick of it. >> are you kidding? a bear in san anselmo? >> it's scary, but also really exciting. >> reporter: when i showed up around 5:30 tonight, there were crowds of people outside already trying to catch a glimpse of this black bear that was up in this tree here behind me. the owners of the home that i'm in right now, they're the ones who called 911. >> nigh next door neighbors across the fence over here, just moved in a couple days ago and sent me a text message and said is it normal that there's e outside and saw the bear, called 911. police department showed up fairly quickly. >> reporter: it took a couple hours for california fish and

wildlife to get here, so central marin police officers were in the backyard trying to keep the bear up in the tree. they were banging pots and pans to scare it and get it up there. they didn't want it to get down and start roaming the streets. in that time, several people gathered to try and see this bear. >> have you ever seen a bear here before? >> never. i've never even heard -- except there's like a town bear in ross and statues. but no. >> reporter: eventually california fish and wildlife arrived here in this neighborhood and that is when they asked people to stay inside their homes and shelter in place. they asked folks who had been watching to stay away. that's when they tried to get the bear to safely come down. eventually it did and dan picks up the story from there. >> it was a few tense minutes way from

my door. >> reporter: it was only later he learned what police were investigating, the sexual assault of a 67-year-old asian woman. >> i was horrified. this is fairly a quiet neighborhood and i didn't expect something that bad. >> i would say shocking is probably an understatement. >> reporter: sergeant recardo cortez says when officers got there, the woman was still being assaulted. >> it was obvious when the officers arrived on scene what was happening felt. >> reporter: the man has been identified as 28-year-old alexander lomax. he was also identified in an incident earlier in the morning about a mile away. a woman walking in the area told investigators she was thrown to the ground while the man attempted to sexual assault her, but he was scared off by a bystander. because of this, police believe there could be more victims.

>> reporter: police were tracking three suspects as part of a burglary investigation. one of the suspects was 23-year- old xavier pitman. as a plain-clothes officer moved in to make an arrest, they both fell to the ground and the officer shot pitman in the wrist. san francisco police chief bill scott says even the officer apologies. >> the officer asked me to convey through his attorney how badly he feels that this happened. he did not intend for his gun to go off and he apologies to mr. pitman. >> this is xavier pitman's mother. basically my son is disabled for the rest of his life due to your officer accidentally shooting his gun. >> it should not have happened and we are sorry. >> reporter: but not everyone has sympathy for pitman.
