masks in most indoor and outdoor situations. there are exceptions. masks are still required on buses, trains, planes, and in hospitals. but inside businesses, people could take off their masks, if local health departments adopt the cdc's guidance. this morning on gma, cdc director dr. michelle wilensky said the new guidance is based on science that shows the vaccines are working, this is just the first step. >> this country is not homogeneous. it's not uniform. there are some areas in this country that still have more disease than others. there is areas that might have close quite low vaccination rates. we can treated necessarily as uniform and a lot of those decisions are going to have to happen at the jurisdictional level. >> you can watch george stephanopoulos's full interview coming up at 7:00 on gma. this comes as the number of covid patients in hospitals nationwide dropped to the lowest level since october, and the daily average death count is below 600, the lowest since april 2020, kumasi?

thank you, jobina. while the cdc its math gof lifornia hasn't. here in the bay area, not everybody is ready to ditch their masks. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is johow people are feeling about these new guidelines. amy? >> reporter: hi, good morning. we are out here to check out what this first morning looks like. it looks the same. it looks very similar to all the days before this, kumasi. take a look. we've got video of some people's first coffee run since the federal government's announcement. and it is still full of masks. people still wearing them inside the starbucks to california has not decided yet whether to adopt the cdc's new guidelines. depot this morning that we have seen are still following california's mask mandate, and not assuming that the cdc's announcement means they can get theirs off inside. we asked one woman about it as she had it in for her coffee. >> to be honest, i didn't even hear that. i guess is several people have already gotten their shot, it would be okay.

but most of us haven't. like i haven't got it. so i'm not 100% there yet. >> reporter: the workers here at the starbucks here in walnut creek tell me they are too worried that customers will come in today and challenge the mask rules, now that the cdc has made the announcement. they think everybody will still wear their masks, that is definitely what they are hoping to california officials did put out a statement saying, they encourage everyone to get their shot, before the state looks to fully reopen on june 15th. live in walnut creek, amy amy hollyfield, abc seven news. mechanism riesling has realized budget proposal today. it'll reflect a $76 billion budget surplus. he unveiled what he is calling the largest small-business relief program in the nation. the proposal would expand the states support for small businesses hit hardest by the pandemic. that includes $4 billion in grants. about $100 million to promote efforts to bring torres back to

allocated by the mayor and the board of supervisors, as relief funds for businesses impacted by covid-19. for my california prosecutors are fighting back against the states plan to release 76,000 inmates early. more than 40 district attorneys in the state have filed a petition with the states correction department, to appeal regulations on a could allow for these early releases. the da from marin, napa, and solano counties have signed on. the state is aiming to trim the present collision by expanding the behavior credits that can shorten sentences by one third beer critics of the plan, like the da if you have joined this petition, the public will be put at risk. people in san anselmo should be on alert for a bear. they are warning neighbors to throw a outdoor trash and bring in pet food or the next day or two. this is all because a young black bear was spotted in the backyard on tamalpais avenue. abc7 news team reporter dan noyes was in the middle of everything. >> reporter: the 252 300 pound black bear and a tree in the backyard, drew a crowd.

central per lease, fire and the humane society called in the state wildlife expert. >> we want to make sure the public is safe, and also, care for the bear. >> reporter: after some discussion about tranquilizing the bear, they decided to wait it out. they cleared the neighborhood and suggested residents evacuate, and i was in one home's backyard when the bear decided to come down. it made its way past the police and headed down the street. >> there were a few tense minutes, the bear made its way from the tree, you see the police here, marin humane society, and the bear went through this yard and the homeowner says, he heard the bear climb his back fence and the police are now saying that the bear has made its way to the base of the mountain. they say that is good news. >> he went up onto and went through. thank you. thank you. yeah. sorry about that. >> well, that was dan noyes int

friday. we will start with current conditions, cloudy, mist and drizzle in the air in san francisco. temperatures 46 to 49 degrees. we've got upper 40s to mid-50s everywhere with mostly cloudy conditions. you can see from the east bay hills, clouds have topped and worked their way all the way into most neighborhood there. that is going to keep us in the 70s inland, 60s around the bay, and 50s at the coast. if you are heading out this evening, once the sun sets around 8:11, it'll fall into the 50s rather quickly. moderate tree pollen, high amounts of grass pollen of the way through the weekend. look how close the threat of thunderstorms gets to us. it's in lake and mendocino county, even northern sonoma county on sunday. so, so far, because of that, we've got a red flag warning around mount shasta and points eastward today. that could beuld beuld beuld bee weekend with more of those dry thunderstorms. we will have a look at future radar when we come back. how about a look at traffic

right now with jobina, good morning. at morning. thank you, mike. we will start with the new crash we are following in the south bay here, according to the chp, we have a hit and run with injuries on south on 680 past montague expressway. you can see a tiny bit of red there from our sensors in san jose, showing there is a bit of a slowdown. looks like the fire department is blocking at least one lane. bringing you a live picture from the golden gate bridge where the chp has issued a fog advisory for the area, they've also issued a wind advisory for the venetia bridge and is also on pass, and here is a look at san rafael, showing off 101. very cloudy start to the morning, kumasi? for my thank you, cold jobina. this is a warning not to use hand sanitizer if you are smoking, because in maryland, as you can see here, officials say this car caught fire when the driver put on sanitizer, while smoking a cigarette. not such a good combo, and in an unventilated car.ventilated c as you can see, and probably guess, the car is considered to be a total loss, and the driver had minor burns.

after the arrest, police say he was also identified in an incident earlier in the morning near fremont boulevard and automall parkway. a 57-year-old woman walking in that area told investigators, she was thrown to the ground while the men attempted to sexually assault her mama but he was scared off by a bystander. because of all of this, please do believe there could be more victims. he is facing elder abuse and sexual assault charges. san francisco district attorney chase aberdeen will be hosting a virtual summit today to discuss the rising time targeting members of the asian american pacific islander community. they will be a panel of experts and community leaders there to talk about ways they can prevent those crimes, and how to prosecute them, should they happen. the online event starts at 9:00 am, and it begins with a palm reading. today, we are dedicating the entire 4:00 pm our to abc7 lessons

conversation, about the hate. you can learn what you can do to help protect our api communities right here on abc7. it's been nearly a year since a vallejo police officer shot and killed sean monta rosa. now department of justice is launching an investigation to determine if criminal charges should be filed. they say he was kneeling down, moving his hands toward his waist, revealing what appeared to be a handgun. it appeared to be a hammer. the attorney general has declined to investigate the shooting until now. yesterday, new attorney general rob bonta told his family that the office would be reviewing the case. >> all of us started crying. my parents, you know, my mom's birthday was yesterday. so, this was almost like a birthday gift to >> they accused the case, yesterday, she released a statement saying they are playing politics, she said he told her that his office would not be reviewing the case, due to funding not being available until i 1st. happening today, volunteer and professional scuba divers will begin an effort to remove trash around all 72 miles of lake tahoe. the nonprofit clean up the lake says there is thousands of pounds of trash at the bottom

and other bay area tech company laying out its return to work plans. plans to reopen in san francisco headquarters in november. it's going to come after the company's employees return to offices worldwide, starting in august. in a blog post, yelp said coming into the reopened offices will be, quote, completely optional for most workers. delta airlines will require all new employees to be vaccinated against covid-19. it becomes the first u.s. carrier to implement a
