you're watching abc 7 news live on abc 7 hulu live and wherever you happen to stream asm new age group is eligible for the covid-19 vaccine in california. hundreds of 12 to 15-year-olds lined up in marin county far vaccine clinic. cornell bernard was there and says the county hopes to meet an ambitious vaccine goal in one week. >> i'm really impressed with the number of families and kids that are out here getting vaccinated. >> one of them was 14-year-old dempsey boon. she just got her first vaccination. along with her 15-year-old brother elijah. >> excited but nervous. i don't like shots in general. for this family the vaccine means protection and freedom. >> we can do more things. we could probably travel. i'm not sure if we're ready for that. but we can travel and go more places and it'll be easier. >> it'll be great to have the kids back in school.

hopefully with less social distancing in the fall. hopefully they don't have to wear masks all the time in the fall. >> hundreds of kids and parents showed up for this clinic in san rafael. days after the state gave the okay for 12 to 15-year-olds to get the shot. he was rolling up his sleeve. but some of his friends are pushing back. >> a lot of my friends are saying they didn't want to get the vaccine because of whatever reason but i feel fine. yeah. i'm really happy. i believe in vaccination. and i think it's good for the community. i'm glad jake is eager to get it. was eager to get it. >> there are 14,012 to 15-year- olds in marin. the county says the goal so get half of them vaccinated by next week. >> the quicker we can get shot into the arms of all those who are eligible. faster we can achieve widespread community immunity. >> we're about to have summer break, and students will scatter for summer camps, sports camps, and i think that

they can do so confidently in knowing they're safer. >> online and walk-in appointments were offered here more school vaccination clinics are planned next week. in san rafael. abc 7 news. mean time, a vaccination clinic on the peninsula is providing a safe space for children with special needs. today, sequoyah hospital in redwood city set up a sensory friendly environment for children. living with conditions like autism. the clinic allowed them to receive their shots in a calm and private setting. there were no lines and no crowds which can be overwhelming. >> can they handle the crowd? can they handle the wait line? is she able to handle the, you know, the transition. so it took all that anxiety away so we can focus on getting her vaccinated. sequoyah hospital partnered with hope technology school and the bay area christian church to put together the clinic. organizers say they wanted to help parents who have avoided crowded vaccination sites.

we are waiting for california to release its guidance for masks. after governor newsome said changes were imminent. yesterday he suggested we could see those soon as he presented his budget proposal. but friday came and went with not a word from the state. the changes are in response to the cdc relaxing requirements for people who are fully vaccinated. the governor said it's a complex issue and the state needs to sort it out. well, the cdc's new guidance on masks for those who are fully vaccinated is receiving mixed reaction. abc news reporter zarin shaw tells us businesses are split on how they'll move forward. >> the cdc's new guidance on masks is liberating news for some but also causing anxiety and confusion. >> because we've been in this lock down for so long, it still feels like a shock to transition to a new normal again. >> with almost 2/3 of the u.s.

population unvaccinated, the new guidelines are facing criticism. >> i really hoped the cdc would have been more conservative and allowed for a few more people to be vaccinated before they started pulling back. >> at least 19 of the 24 states that still had mask mandate haves announced plans to scrap them or adopt cdc guidance, including colorado , which is moving to 100% capacity and no social distancing. >> and oregon. >> protect yourself and your families and those around you by continuing to wear your mask and keep your distance. >> some businesses are updating policies but still following state and local laws. wal-mart will not require masks for vaccinated workers or shoppers. and beginning monday, starbucks won't require customers to wear masks while in its stores. but kroger's grocery store chain is keeping its mask policy in place for now. business owners are concerned but enforcing the new rules. >> should i card people? should i ask for vaccination? i can see the conflict will be

with people. where they're going to go and say well , i'm vaccinate bud i don't have my paper with me, how do you deal with that? >> the cdc, tsa and department of transportation remind travelers they'll be required to wear a mask on planes, trains, and buses as well as travel hubs such as airports. zorine shaw, abc news, los angeles. a san francisco staple back in business. for the first time in over a year, people got to enjoy the historic streetcars on market street and the embark adaro today. the cars are running seven days a week to. day marked the return of under ground service. service was shut do the start of the pandemic. the closure allowed crews to work on upgrades including under ground wifi. a major turn point in applying for college, the university of california's system is dropping sat and act scores from its admissions. the chronicle reports all of it is part of an agreement in a

jackie spear spoke to the crowd there. today is unity against hate day. a national event organized bicultural and political organizations to speak up against acts of hate on aapi and all communities. on monday, the white house and the walt disney company are cohosting a panel discussion on diversity in hollywood. and aapi representation behind the scenes. i'll be moderating the panel which includes awe tore kevin kwan and writer director jessica u just to name a couple. watch it all monday at 11:00 a.m. live on the abc news app wherever you happen to stream. the white house sent a diplomat to the middle east in an attempt to broker a ceasefire between the israelis and the palestinians, the region is seeing its worst violence its seen in seven years. one israeli air strike destroyed a building today that houses the offices of the associated press and aljaserad they claimed it contained hamas

military assets and hamas continues to fire rockets from gaza with israel's iron dome intercepting most of them. activists led a march in san francisco to oppose the israeli attacks in jerusalem and tba sha. gaza. 3 to 4000 people marched through the mission district this afternoon. they say they want israeli authorities to stop the forced removal of palestinian residents from their homes. and as you heard, they're calling for a free palestine. >> we are one people. we need to be the march wound through the mission district and while it was loud, it was also peaceful. she is ready to take on changing the world. meet a san francisco high school student whose efforts outside the class room have helped her land a prestigious scholarship. and taking a live look outside, kind of gray, kind of

six graduating seniors in san francisco have been given the superintendent's 21st century award. each will receive a 3000-dollar scholarship. and it's part of our commitment toward building a better bay area. we teamed one the unified school district to acknowledge each winner. leigh-ann melendez highlights the successes of lana wynn. >> i go to george washington high school and i'm ready to tackle a changing world. i grew up in the tenderloin district. my family faced a lot of financial struggles growing up. higher education seemed like a hard to reach goal. and not a clear path for me.

>> i was surrounded by resource, teachers who believed in me. and friends who supported me. and that shaped who i am today. >> my name is linda, and i'm the nurse at george washington high school's wellness center. >> lana goes above and beyond. although we have a lot of exceptional students here, she's outstanding. >> when a close family member became sick, she was forced to learn how to navigate the intricate health care system. >> throughout this i learned many schools, patience, and working with other people. and i learned to reach out to many people within the industry. >> that external experience made her a student health advocate at george washington high. >> i figured that the wellness center was somewhere great to start with. i felt like many students here voiced how there weren't that many resources that met their needs. >> when the pandemic forced schools to close, ted supply hope. sending backpacks , note pads,

live doppler 7 giving you the active sweep m we're tracking a couple showers. we have a thunderstorm pop up over the past hour. thankfully, that storm is moving off the coast. and any lightning we did see also came with the added benefit of rainfall. this is not a dry lightning threat that moved through parts of ukiah. any activity we have right now is really going to diminish over the next hour as the sun goes down, high elevation snow in the sierra. you can see around bridgeport. we have a little rain many the sierra as well. all this activity, responsible because of an area of low pressure moving by to the east, it's diving to the south and east. and as it continues its journey away from california, it will take the wet weather with it over night tonight. not the greatest beach day, a live look from santa cruz, over cast skies along the coast, cool in the 50s. there's folks enjoying the sand at this hour. temperature wise, it was a

below average day. we had that on shore breeze, a lot of cloud cover close to the coast. it's 55 in the city. only 59 right now san jose. 61 in santa rosa. a little warmer. sunshine, a light breeze at 74 degrees right now. we'll show you that marine layer. it's coming back over night tonight. first thing tomorrow morning, 7:00 a.m. it's a cloudy start again for most of us. those clouds slow to break down again. by the afternoon, we'll see a fair am of sunshine inland. but the clouds are stubborn along the coastline, keeping temperatures on the cool side once again. we have an added breeze coming back in the afternoon, wind gusts by sunday, around 3:00 p.m. you can see any where from 20 to 30 miles per hour. it's kind of solidifying that cool feel we'll have to finish out the weekend. over night tonight, turning cloudy once again, some coastal drizzle as well. numbers in the upper 40s. to lower 50s. tomorrow, clouds very slow to break down in the morning. by the afternoon, it's mostly sunny, away from the coast.
