american pacific islanderged wi. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. you are watching abc7 news live here on abc7, hulu live, and wherever you happen to stream. in the east bay, a rally to celebrate and uplift the aapi community, while denouncing hate and violence, which seems to be happening every day. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard reports on how california's new attorney general was there with a commitment to stand with the community. >> there are so many of us, and we all have sve. and we are the story that is america. >> reporter: organizers say this rally in san leandro was meant to uplift and celebrate the aapi community. reverend carl pascual says his family is all for that. >> we're standing out here really to say hey, we don't want to be afraid. we don't want to have to worry about who we are.

we want to be proud of who we are. >> reporter: but many are still worried and afraid. >> every day is a nightmare. in oakland, people getting robbed, getting beat up. >> reporter: this recent attack in san leandro caught on a neighbor's security camera shows an 80-year-old asian man being knocked to the ground while one of the teen attackers is heard laughing. in san leandro, alone police say crimes against the aapi community were up 300% from 2019 to 2020. >> as a department, we're not going to tolerate any hate-related crimes here. >> reporter: many in the aapi community are looking to california's new attorney general rob bo fighting hate crimes. >> we have seen members of the api community be yelled at and spit on and shoved down and punched in the face. >> reporter: bonta says he is prioritizing the protection of aapi individuals from crime. >> we also need to make sure that those who commit hate

tully community branch library in east san jose today. volunteers canvassed nearby neighborhoods to get the word out about the vaccinations. no appointments, insurance, or identification needed. >> why we picked tully library is it was close to the community, especially our most vulnerable which is the unhoused community. >> south bay community groups also pitched in to make the clinic possible. also in the south bay, san jose firefighters control the grass fire that burned about ten acres near a homeless encampment. it all started this morning near the las lagos golf course. firefighters say they tried to protect the homeless encampments, but at least one of them burned down. the good news, no one was injured. firefighters suspect an arsonist may have ignited a wildfire in southern california. the palisades fire is now at 1300 acres with zero containment. it's burning in topanga canyon, just about two miles from the ocean. no homes have burned, but about

all right. turning now to sports. the warriors had an important showdown with the grizzlies. at stake, play-off seeding. chris alvarez joins us now to sort out what this means. >> it's been a busy day, and a lot to still sort out for the warriors in terms of an opponent on wednesday's playing game. this much we know, they are the eight seed. they will play on the road at portland or in l.a. against the lakers. steph curry turned in win the scoring title. he got that done early. steph finishes with 46 point, joining michael jordan, wilt chamberlain, kareem abdul-jabbar as the only players to win multiple scoring titles and nba titles in league history.

appearance at a rally along the great highway in san francisco this morning. the save our great walkway group is hoping to keep the main north-south road closed to cars. city officials turned it car-free last year, all as part of its pandemic slow streets initiative. some want the great highway to be a permanent pedestrian and bicycle boulevard. opponents say it is time to reopen the streets and say drivers are flooding the nearby avenues as an alternative zipping through those residential streets at highway speeds. well, take 50 to 60 volunteers. a few hundred cans of paint, and you have a colorful new look to the guadalupe river park visitor center in san jose. it took a year of planning and design to make this all happen. the painting started friday, and you can already see the results. >> we are painting a kind of a nod to the river in terms of the animals that are native to the river, which are also

studied by the kids and visitors that come through the visitor center. >> and the painting was very lower roar because apparently it was a paint by numbers project. volunteers picked up a can of paint and matched it to numbers on the wall. design and materials were largely donated by local businesses. well, san francisco's financial district turned into an action-packed movie set today. check it out. this is a rare sight nowadays. a real cable car was brought out, first seen along california street. simulated gunfire was heard in front of the set of the 101 california building. filming has been under way around the city for the past few weeks for a two-hour movie reboot of the television drama nash bridges. that stars don johnson and cheech marin as reprising their roles as san francisco police officers. well, as we move through the pandemic, another is being remembered this weekend. the big virtual event that bay

a public health activist in the bay area says a plan by the fda to ban the sell of menthol cigarettes will take years. he says local governments need to take action. >> they're bills before city councils in san leandro, san jose, in los angeles that are actively moving forward as we speak. we have to keep our foot on the metal. >> the tobacco industry challenged a state law passed last year that would ban menthol and flavored tobacco. voters will now decide on it next year. a bay area fundraising tradition raised funds and awareness about hiv and aids. the walk was virtual and abc7 news was a proud sponsor each year. dan ashley has hosted the event for 27 years. >> dion, thanks very much. we had a great day today here at the hotel zelos for the aids walk home viewing party.rmlye'l thounds of people ld gek t

event. and i'm glad they could make it happen for another year. i've been to it many years in the past, and i've always had just a wonderful time. today if you were outside at all, you certainly felt that cool air once again. numbers below average for another day. let's see if we can find some warmer temperatures on the seven-day forecast. outside right now, the exploratorium camera showing you clouds descending again over parts of san francisco, moving into the east bay as well. but we'll take you south. to south bay right now, look at san jose. it's nothing but sunshine from this vantage point. but we will turn to overcast skies across the entire region tonight as our marine layer strengthens once again. numbers, 50s and 60s for another evening. 53 in the city. we're down to 62 in san jose with the sunshine. 54 in santa rosa. 61 right now in concord. breezy this afternoon and evening. strongest through the delta right now. but everywhere we have that wind anywhere from generally 10 to 25 miles per hour. and we're kind of stuck in this

pattern with this breeze strengthening in the afternoon. overnight tonight, it remains pretty breezy across the central part of the bay, from san francisco, oakland, through discovery bay. and then tomorrow afternoon you get the daytime heating. a little bit of energy in the atmosphere, and the winds pick up once again. tomorrow it's no different. by 4:00, 5:00, we still have the winds gust 25 to 35 miles per hour. just kind of reinvigorating that cooler air overhead. here is the marine layer. first thing tomorrow morning, it's overcast skies for most of us. we'll even allow for the chance of more coastal drizzle once again. as you go throughout the morning, the cloud cover slow to retreat. even by lunchtime, we'll likely have clouds over parts of oakland. still mostly cloudy over the city and along the coast. by the afternoon and into the early evening, we'll find more in the way of sunshine as our marine layer gets a little bit more compressed. overnight tonight, though, it's mostly cloudy. coastal drizzle temperatures in the mid-40s to lower 50s for your starting temperatures on
