relieved like so many others to finally make it to san francisco. >> so we are as a team made a decision to come here. >> reporter: cheering from passengers on a jetblue plane the departed new york's jfk en route to san francisco international airport, one that had to be diverted to minneapolis due to an unruly passenger. >> gesturing stabbing motions towards the other passenger and there was also observed erratic behavior and snorting of white substance. >> reporter: witnesses say that passenger had a bagful of that white substance, touched at least one other woman, made inappropriate comments to numerous female passengers, yelled racial slurs towards passengers upon boarding and refused to wear a mask. >> when he got to his seat, he started yelling that he wanted a white porsche. i don't know who he was talking to, but that's what he was saying. >> he kept walking back and forth to the bathroom.

he had no shoes on. he smelled awful. >> reporter: in this video taken by a passenger those with jetblue explained that they had to move one female passenger away from the man. upon landing in minneapolis witnesses we talked with say the man in question was met by officers and the fbi. >> i think everyone was very uncomfortable and i think he posed a flight risk and again kudos to the captain and the flight crew for keeping everyone safe and taking appropriate action. >> reporter: that from a witness who sat near the man in question saying he had a plastic five and may have been on cocaine or meth. others were unclear what was going on even as it was happening. >> wanted to us sing at some point and he smelled very strongly. it was a very pungent smell and he kept walking to the bathroom. he wasn't wearing a mask. >> he sent saying like bless you to me and he was acting really erratically. >> reporter: passengers appreciative and the airline's

response in getting the man off the plane. what a night it was for so many of those passengers, fortunately no one was hurt. now we did reach out to multiple agencies in the minneapolis area and jetblue but have yet to hear back, but again after talking with all those passengers they were breathing easy tonight knowing that they're back home and they're safe. reporting live in san francisco, j.r. stone, abc7 news. >> what a headache of a journey, just glad to see everyone made it to their destination. many thanks to you, j.r. moving on, the nation's top health officials defended their new guidance about mask wearing today telling americans you do not need to wear a mask in most settings if you have been fully vaccinated. dr. rochelle walensky and dr. anthony fauci defended the cdc's new guidance from last week on the sunday morning talk shows. both said people who haven't been fully vaccinated should get their shot asap or keep on

those masks until they do. >> we are asking people to take their health into their own hands, to get vaccinated and if they don't, then they continue to be at risk. >> if, in fact, this serves as an incentive for people to get vaccinated, all the better. i hope it does actually. >> more than 200 million americans are not yet fully vaccinated. california health officials have yet to respond to the cdc guidance, but the state's nurses association is urging them to reject that cdc guidance. the national nurses association ha t luz pena talked to union representatives about why they're leery even when the still require masks in hospitals. california's department of public health is getting pressure from the state's nurses association to not follow the cdc's mask guidance calling it a huge blow to their collective efforts to confronting covid-19. >> we're going to be there for our patients. we always have been, but it was

really a challenge caring for so many patients that were so sick. >> sandy redding is president of the california nurses association. she says there are multiple factors that concern them including people not getting tested even after getting vaccinated. >> i think we need to continue with the precautionary principles since there are so many unknowns about the variants and the efficacy of the vaccines, whether we're going to need a booster or not. so we need to continue wearing masks. it's also on the honor system. >> reporter: let's talk data. in california more than 50% of the population has received at least one dose of the vaccine. in san francisco the numbers are even better. 60% of the population 16 and older are fully vaccinated. >> i don't think 50% is enough and i think one dose isn't enough. >> reporter: we took these concerns to the senior investigator and president of the gladstone institutes, a biomedical research organization. what's your take? >> i think the data are clear

still a little breezy out there. we've had this wind it seems like for the past week. it intensifies in the day and weakens a bit at night, but we're seeing wind gusts 15 to 25 miles per hour. so we'll keep a little breeze overnight especially in the central part of the bay from san francisco to oakland to hayward. you'll find that breeze and then again tomorrow afternoon we're just in that pattern where we find wind strengthening by the end of the day. so 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. on monday we'll see winds 20 to 35 miles per hour. that onshore flow will continue to keep the marine layer intact along the immediate coastline. here's your hour-by-hour look at the cloud cover first thing tomorrow morning, may gray in full effect. we have overcast skies with that fog slowly burning off. by about noon we still have areas of fog in the east bay around oakland and san leandro, cloudy over the city and then that cloud cover continues to break down. by the evening we should see a little bit of sunshine even

take a look at this, firefighters suspect an arsonist may have ignited a wildfire in southern california. the palisades fire has been burning out of control all weekend and you are looking at firefighters say investigators released one person and are now questioning a second suspect. reporter leanne suter with our sister station in los angeles has the latest on the firefight. >> reporter: this is what the blaze looked like earlier today

when those cooler temperatures were in effect. you can see it really kind of knocked down some of that open flame, not as much fire on the front lines, but again when the weather, when that cool, moist weather cleared, that fire came back to life. the blaze broke out friday night in topanga canyon. saturday the blaze exploded in size, now at more than 1,300 acres burned, 0% containment at this point. officials say even though the hills may look green, the fuel is dry since we're about ten inches below average raffle. the fire is remote and rugged area that hasn't burned in 50 years. >> it's preheating due to the wind and slope alignment. that fire is preheating fuels downrange. as a result, they're more receptive to fire sparks and embers. >> reporter: firefighters continuing to work on the front lines trying to get a line

around this fire as quickly as possible, 0% containment at this point. evacuation orders remain in place for about 500 homes. an evacuation warning has been issued now for 135 other homes, but at this point that is simply a warning. they are waiting to see what that fire does and to see what area is moves into. in pacific palisades, leanne suter, abc7 news. a large street mural appeared in the mission district sometime after yesterday's big march for a free palestine. it was painted at valencia and liberty streets and shows two men on either side of a palestinian poppy. there's a drawing marched through the mission saturday afternoon to protest the violence in the middle east. that violence continued as israeli warplanes unleashed a new series of airstrikes in gaza city. hamas also pressed on launching rockets into civilian areas in

israel. abc news reporter julia mcfarland looks at the latest round of violence. >> reporter: rescuers searched for survivors under the rubble after predawn israeli airstrikes targeted several houses on a main road in gaza. the israeli defense force released video it says shows an airstrike on the home of gaza's most senior hamas leader, a source telling abc news he was not at home at the time. other israeli strikes took out a series of tunnels and launch sites. prime minister benjamin netanyahu defending israel's actions on cbs's "face the nation." >> we're trying to degrade hamas' terrorist abilities and degrade their will to do this again. it will take some time. i hope it won't take long. >> reporter: but many caught in the crossfire have been civilians. the palestinian health ministry says 174 palestinians have been killed since this latest

conflict began including 47 children and 29 women. among them mohammad ha wife and five sons buried under this rubble. later he was led to a a where a tiny miracle awaited him, his 5-month-old son survived. this building was brought down that housed international media including al-jazeera and the international press. president biden called about efforts to broker a ceasefire. biden said he supports israel's right to defend itself but urged netanyahu to protect civilians and journalists. julia mcfarland, abc news, london. there are more promising numbers out today on how california is doing in the fight against covid-19. the state's seven-day positivity rate keeps falling now down to 1%. that is a new low.

this is a rare sight these days, a cable car brought out. simulated gunfire was heard on the set in front of the 101 california building. filming has been underway around the city these past two weeks for a two-hour movie reboot of the tv drama "nash

bridges" starring don johnson and cheeh marin. it will take 50 to 60 volunteers, a few hundred cans of paint and you'll have a colorful new look at the guadalupe park visitor center in san jose. it took a year of planning and designing to make this happen. painting started friday and you can already see the results. all of this a paint by numbers project. volunteers picked up a can of paint and matched it to a number on the wall. the design and materials were largely all donated by local businesses. a lifelong san franciscan celebrated her 101st birthday today surrounded by loved ones she was not able to embrace during last year's big day. cici is an inspiration to us all. here she is with her family happy and healthy. she also face-timed with her great, great grandchild today. she's a san francisco native born in north beach after her parents immigrated from italy.
