several cities this weekend demanding president biden take action to stop these air strikes. abc's ike egoch chi begins our coverage. >> reporter: good morning, andrew. this crisis entering its second week, and right now it appears neither side is willing to back down. israeli war planes unleashed a new barrage of air strikes in gaza overnight hours after israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said there's no end in sight to the ongoing clashes. >> so it'll take some time. i hope it won't take long. >> reporter: it follows the deadliest 24 hours of the conflict so far. fighting escalating between israel and the hamas, the militant group that rules gaza. hamas launching more than 3,000 rockets at israel so far, and the israeli army responding this weekend saying it targeted the underground tunnels used by hamas, releasing photos allegedly showing hamas rocket launchers near civilian buildings. rescuers searched for survivors

in the rubble. among them, this man's wife and four children. his 7-year-old daughter was pulled from the rubble alive. according to the palestinian health ministry, 197 palestinians have been killed since the latest conflict began, including 58 children and 34 women. israel has reported ten deaths including two children. in the meantime, israel is facing international outcry after an air strike brought down this building that housed several media outlets including al jazeera and the associated press. >> it's a perfectly legitimate target, and i can tell you that we took every precaution to make sure that there were no civilian injuries. >> reporter: the israelis gave people inside one hour to evacuate, saying they provided evidence to the u.s. that the building housed a hamas military installation, but the associated press ceo calls the strike an attack on freedom. >> that building provided the best vantage point for the world

to see the events in gaza, and now that building is destroyed. >> reporter: now president biden says he supports israel's right to defend itself, but urged netanyahu to protect civilians and journalists. 28 democrats in the u.s. senate say that's not enough. they've signed a letter for an immediate ceasefire. andrew? >> ike from washington, d.c. thank you. millions of drivers in parts of the u.s. might have a tough time finding gas. nearly 90% of gas stations in washington, d.c. are running on e, and the website gas buddy says nearly 60% of stations in north carolina are dry. it's because of that cyberattack on a fuel pipeline more than a week ago. the pipeline is running again, but experts say human nature is now the problem. >> this is not the result of the colonial pipeline being shut down. rather how that fed fear that there wouldn't be enough gas, and americans started to hoard and panic. >> gas prices nationwide now

average $3.04 a gallon, and that's expected to rise before memorial i do. now to the growing confusion over the cdc's guidance on when and where to wear a mask as a company changes its policy today. >> reporter: a confrontation involving rocky schroder is bringing america's mask confusion front and center. >> i'm a supervisor. >> reporter: seen asking an employee at a costco why he's not allowed into the store without a mask. >> didn't you see the news? you didn't see the news? nationwide costco has said you don't need to wear masks. >> actually, that's not accurate. >> what is accurate? >> reporter: schroder posted the video days after the cdc announced vaccinated people can go maskless in most settings. costco followed suit dropping its mask requirement, but only in locations where it doesn't conflict with local mask mandates and california's remains in place. >> there does seem to be the possibility for mid-june in california. >> would they grant us that, the

people in power? you're going to listen to these people? they've destroyed our economy. they're destroying our ks will n costco, walmart and trader joe's allowing vaccinated customers to go maskless. home depot and target are among several companies leaving mask mandates in place. >> many businesses are worried because, you know, there's no way to really confirm who indeed is vaccinated, and who is following the cdc guidelines as they should be. >> reporter: critics argue the cdc guidance is unclear and relies on people telling the truth about being vaccinated. the country's largest nurse's union is now urging the cdc to change course saying the new guidance is a huge blow to our efforts at confronting this virus and the pandemic. the cdc director defends the guidance saying it's based on vaccine data, and is not a green light for widespread removal of masks. >> if they're vaccinated, they are safe. if they are not vaccinated, they are not safe. they should still be wearing a mask or better yet, get

vaccinated. >> reporter: in the meantime, at least nine states have now banned so-called vaccine passports, meaning businesses in those states can't force customers to prove they're vaccinated, but oregon is taking a different approach. it may soon require businesses to verify a customer's vaccination before allowing them to go maskless. >> this would include seeing their vaccination card, a picture of their vaccination card, and checking that they truly have been fully vaccinated. >> and when it comes to schools, the cdc says they should keep mask policies in place for the rest of this school year. new guidance for the fall is expected soon. a fiery train derailment has forced at least 80 people in northwest iowa to evacuate their homes. 47 train cars piled up in this crash. the union pacific train was hauling a mix of fertilizer and amoan yum nitrate. so far no injuries have been reported. another union pacific train derailed in southern minnesota over the weekend. 28 of the 50 cars went off the track. two were leaking hydrochloric

they were ending their 27 year marriage. the "wall street journal" reporting in 2019, microsoft board of directors began investigating gates for alleged prior relationship with a female employee. the board reportedly hired a law firm to investigate. according to the "wall street journal," gates resigned before the investigation was complete. before the full board could make a formal decision on the matter. telling the journal gates decision to transition off the board was no way related. this morning microsoft saying throughout the investigation microsoft provided support to the employee who raised the concern. this latest scrutiny as "new york times" reports gates had a reputation for quote questionable behavior in work related settings. writing, on at least a few occasions mr. gates pursued women who worked for him. we have not verified the claims.
