a different section and there e caused it. there is growing concern for people after the cdc issued new guidelines saying that fully vaccinated people do not need to wear masks. some businesses are lifting mask requirements including costco and trader joe's but only in places where local mask mandates are not in place. in california, we are waiting for the state to announce if there will be changes. now the cdc director and anthony fauci are defending the cdc's position. both say the people who have not been vaccinated should get the shot asap and keep a mask on until they do. >> we are asking people tn't, ty >> if this serves as an incentive for people to get vaccinated, all the better. i hope it does actually. >> more than 200 million americans are not yet fully

vaccinated. and all of us here in california still need to wear a mask indoors because of a state mandate. some groups are hoping that the state will keep a mask mandate and reject the cdc's guidance. amy hollyfield is live with why the california nurses associations still want masks to be required in hospitals. >> reporter: good morning. nurses vividly remember the height of the pandemic at the hospitals and what it was like inside. they are saying this is a huge blow to their efforts, that they do not want to go through all of that again. california has not made a decision yet on whether to accept the cdc guidelines. the nurses are asking state to reject the ruling. doctors say the vaccine has the power to protect us without a bs sernd about the variants, not enough people are vaccinated and

people don't get tested after they have been vaccinated. >> i think we need to continue since there are so many unknowns with the efficacy against variants and whether we will need a booster. we need to continue to wear masks. it is also on the honor system. >> i think the data is clear that the vaccine protects against the variants we know right now. even if there is a break through infection which will occur at a time, the amount of virus we are detecting in people is four fold lower than without a vaccine. >> reporter: doctors are calling the vaccine protection amazing saying it is showing to be 94% effective. that was in the trials . now they are seeing that in the field as the population gets the shot. more than 50% of californians have received at least one dose of the vaccine. no word yet on the state's reaction to this demand from the union and no comment yet from the cdc. live in san ramon, abc7 news.

>> thank you. starbucks has updated the mask policy. starting today, vaccinated people can visit the chain without a face covering. if you are in the bay area, don't take off your mask just yet. masks are still required at locations where local or state regulations require them. as businesses and other entities respond to the mask guidance, we have been updating our guidance on our website. we will update it as soon as governor newsom responds to the guidelines. firefighters suspect an arsonist may have ignited a fire in southern california. the palisades fire has been burning out of control since friday. investigators are questioning a second suspect. >> one person was detained and released yesterday. now a second person is being questioned. more than 1300 acres have burned since the fire started friday night. there is no containment yet.

it is burning in tapannia canyon about two miles from the ocean. the fire is burning through an old thicket that hasn't burned in more than 50 years. >> there is tremendous heat generated by the fires. it is preheating due to the wind and slope alignment. it is preheating fuels down range. as a result, they are more susceptive to fire sparks, embers and fire growth down range. >> 1,000 residents have been evacuated. the reg station is dry because of lack of rainfall and drought. >> thank you. in the south bay, san jose firefighters controlled a grass fire that burned 10 acres near a homeless encampment. it started near the los logoes golf course. one encampment burned down but no one was hurt. contra costa is removing dry or dead vegetation and they are clearing road vegetation back 3

feet to increase safety and reduce fire danger. this will happen every day from 8:00 unthill 40 through next friday. drivers on pinehurst road from the alameda county line to sky line boulevard may be impacted boy delays. the good news is the fire danger will remain at a lower state than what we had a couple of weeks ago. that is due to the fact that we have drizzle in the morning and cooler than average temperatures in the afternoon hours. let's start with inland neighborhoods. most of us in the 50s. 49 in lafayette, one of the cooler neighborhoods. we are looking at temperatures in the upper 40s to mid-50s, 54 in oakland, and also san leandro and hayward and about 50 in san francisco. here's a look at the low clouds hanging over the peninsula this morning. temperatures will remain the same and so will the cloud cover through the morning commute. you can sewe never quite get rid

the minnesota police officer charged in the death of daunte wright is set to appear in court today. kim potter has a pretrial hearing in hennepin county district court. video shows potter shooting wright during a traffic stop last month. she could be heard shouting taser multiple times before firing had her gun. the former police chief called it an accidental discharge. potter resigned and was charmged with second degree manslaughter. some places on the east coast are facing significant gas shortage delays after the colonial pipe line restarted after a cyberattack. the pipee ssslis of glo if you look at washington d.c., it doesn't look that way. 70% of gas station stations are expected to fill up within

the next few days. a jet blue flight headed to san francisco had to divert mid flight because of an unruly man on board. passengers tell us he was harassing women, possibly doing drugs and refused to wear a mask. j.r. stone has the story from sfo. >> reporter: cheering from passengers on a jet blue plane that departed new york's jfk enroute to san francisco international airport. it had to be diverted to minneapolis due to an unruly passenger. >> gesturing stabbing motions towards the other passenger and it was also observed erratic behavior and snorting a white substance. >> reporter: witnesses say that passenger had a bag full of that white substance, touched at least one other woman, made inappropriate comments to numerous female passengers, yelled racial slurs towards passengers upon boarding and refused to wear a mask. >> when he got to his seat, he

started yelling that he wanted a white porsche. i don't know who he was talking to but that's what he was saying. >> he kept walking back and forth to had the bathroom. he had no shoes on. he smelled awful. >> reporter: in this video taken by a passenger, those on jet blue explained they had to move one female passenger away the man. upon landing in minneapolis, the passengers we talked to said the man was met by the fbi. >> i think he presented a flight risk and kudos to the crew and the captain for keeping everyone safe and taking appropriate action. >> reporter: that came from a man who sat near the man and sa plaic knife and may have been on meth. others were unclear going on. >> he smelled very strongly. it was a very pungent smell.

nurses are saying this pandemic is not over and they say lifting the mask mandate would put the nurses, patients at clinics and hospitals in danger. they want it to stay in place. the nurse's union says the cdc decision to lift the mask mandate for vaccinated people is not based on science. they are asking the state of california to keep the mask rule in place. doctors say the vaccine is enough to protect us without a mask. nurses are concerned about variants of the virus that not enough people are vaccinated, and that people don't get tested after they have been vaccinated. nurses say this is a huge blow to their efforts, that they donot want to go through it all again. >> we are going to be there for our patients, we also have been. but it was really a challenge caring for so many patients that were so sick with the covid-19 virus and having zero capacity

at some times. >> we have a good idea in the field what the protection is of this vaccine, really 94%, even with healthcare workers getting exposed to this in the hospital. >> reporter: the cdc says the vaccine is about 100% effective at preventing hospitalization and death. more 60% of californians have received at least -- more than 50% have received at least one dose of the vaccine. the union says it is outraged that the cdc has relaxed the mask mandate in the middle of the pandemic. the cdc has not yet responded to this pressure from the union. reporting live from san ramon, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. new this morning, target has announced it is no longer requiring customers or employees to wear their masks if they are fully vaccinated. like all the other businesses that are adjusting policies,

this is only applying in places where there are not mask mandates. target says it still strongly recommends everyone wear their mask. the cdc says the mask should stay on at school at least for the rest of this school year. the agency reasons that most younger children are not vaccinated and may not be eligible until the fall. while the cdc says children who get infected tend to have less severe cases of covid-19, they can still get sick and spread the virus to others. the cdc will update guidance for the next school year in the coming weeks to give educators time to plan. the city of san jose hosted a vaccine clinic for those disproportionately impacted by the impact. johnson & johnson vaccines were offered at a library in east sae jose. they wanted to get the word out before the clinic that people could get vaccines free, without
