>> we have been great. we are so happy to be here. it is so great for you guys to have us on. thank you so much. >> the last time you two were in the studio i am a baseball net i just love baseball, and hunter had his bath with him. he let me swing his bat in the studio standing over in the area where i do the weather. it was such a treat. well, first of all, i love hunter and lexi, but baseball is just in my blood. the chance to swing a real baseball player's the bat was credible. >> look at that. that was 2018. i think you were in here to talk about wonder wise foundation. one of the nonprofits you guys support. didn't that seem like a lifetime ago? >> lohas happened. >> a little bit. right? you began this heroic hero's journey. the mythical heroes journey in
3:03 pm
baseball, hunter. and then you guys have been through so much i just want to ask you, you exude happiness all the time. which is why we love you. this past year with the pandemic and having to retire from baseball were there lows? were there ups and downs? >> you know, to believe in tough times, but for the most part we have been very fortunate with everything. i'm extremely fulfilled to have such great bonds and connections to not only san francisco, wrens, the community, a wonderful wife and partner. we have so much fun. it has been pretty good. really, a lot of our journey is just working to share some of that, to try to be, just help out where we can. and do our best to be good outstanding members of the community. >> speaking of been great members of the community, this wonderful love story between the two of you and the city of san francisco, there are a lot of basebalplayerseds for the ar
3:04 pm
embraced by a city for what they do on the field. you guys are also embraced by the city for your involvement in the city itself off the field. >> yeah. we are extremely lucky to have that kind of love and support. i mean, replaces, how may people get to say that? right? yeah. we love san francisco. we love continually exploring san francisco. supporting the small businesses. just learning more about it, the history, everything here. the architecture. all of the amazing restaurants but this is really just a great city and we are so lucky it has embraced hunter in such a wonderful way. i think we both feel this way, that we kind of both grew up in this city. yeah. that is such a special thing. we met here and got married here emma fell in love here, we are still here. >> a lot of the things i couldn't enjoy as a player, but we are always enjoying the giant's season this year. it has been so fun to follow. >> a lot of you and the old gang
3:05 pm
being awesome out there. and that we have the dodgers in town. can i get a boo? you guys are doing something really cool. really cool. just in time for the series you have quite a treat for fans of baseball and coffee. i know those are the two big love that you have. talk about what you are doing. >> yeah. we are having, across the street from the ballpark, we made it super convenient to or you to come in and stop by and get caffeinated, get hyped before you head into the dodgers/giants rivalry. peekaboo really hard and she really hard for the guys. epic we are having a small pop- up pick we help both hunter and i will be there but we are selling fun bowls, which are coffee company is doing in collaboration with baseball is a. we are including a limited edition hat. and coffee, of course. >> i got one. i'm going to put it on. >> she was showing it to me
3:06 pm
earlier. really cool. >> go get you one, spencer. don't even worry about it. 100% of the profits are going to pitch in for softball and baseball, which is helping kids in under resourced communities get baseball and softball equipment. right now during covid they can't share equipment. we are making sure that the kids in underserved communities are getting hooked up and letting the kids play. right? >> that is so cool >> now more than ever, equipment because of covid protocols, kids can't share anymore, so we are really excited to put this passion project in. giving back to something even when i was a kid i need help getting equipment. different people in my day's a business helped him through that. let's pay it forward and get people involved. >> yeah. also, i have to give a huge thanks to st. franks for helping us get together with this. without them i wouldn't be able to do the pop-up. huge thanks to st. franks for letting me brew coffee and get
3:07 pm
the coffee done over there. they are helping with that. it's going to taste good but i promise. >> why don't we put it to taste test? walk me through it. i got the rising grind, which i love that, rise and grind but i actually ground up some of it. just walk me through it. i have four cups of water here. tell me how much i should put in in terms of the beans. >> how many grams of beans do you have there? >> grams? i'm not sure. i have a bunch. i have like tablespoons. >> each bundle comes with a little brew bag. you should have gotten a brew guide with that. you're going to want, 30 grams or 60 grams? >> i think for six cups you want 60 grams. >> is that about one tablespoon? i have a tablespoon measurement. >> we have a little scale.
3:08 pm
>> you do it so often. >> that looks pretty good right there. >> okay. i turn it on. it's going to brew. hopefully, in a few minutes we will be able to taste it but it says toffee, earl grey, vanilla -- how do you pick it? where do you go and how do you source it and how do you put it all together in the grocery process and all of that? >> with all of the coffee redo on youtube, my youtube channel, we have met amazing, such amazing coffee community. i have had help along the way to really get, to make sure that these beans are ethically and transparently sourced. our roasters are over and houston they work out of greenway coffee but basically, they helped me pick and match, we have a theme every month, so they helped me curate the theme with the coffee. this one is from guatemala and ethiopia. ethiopia has the most rich soil . that is where you get that, you are supposed to get the earl grey taste. and guatemala,
3:09 pm
because of the way it is dried out, that is where you going to get a lot of that toffee flavor. the way -- it all comes -- it ao the sourcing and how they dry it . i can bore you all day about this. >> i love the way you are describing it. this is how i sound when i talk about wine. all the little hints of this and that you pick up. i can relate. >> he is a connoisseur. do you want to do a wine call up with spencer? >> let's just stick with coffee. >> i would love to. it's all of the kind of the same. it's very important to smell it grouping and let that, and think about what my smelling here? what is that i like? coffee is very subjective. there are so many flavors and so many ways you can go. this is more like an earthy copy. just like with line, some people like acidic and some people like dry and some people like sweet. there are many went different ways to do it took a lot of
3:10 pm
these farmers and stuff are actually phenomenal people doing stuff, eco-friendly, taking care of so much of their communities. a lot of these communities are completely changed by the coffee industry. >> it's important to us that we pay their trade price and what they are doing over there in these underdeveloped countries, you know, this is a big deal to them. this bag of coffee you are getting is so much more than what you think. it really goes back down to the roaster, back to the producer, back to the farmer. it really is , you can feel really good about your cup of coffee in the morning. >> so much more to talk about with lexi and hunter. we will take a short break on the air, but don't go away, because that coffee will be ready for a taste test after the break. we will take a walk down memory lane with them
3:13 pm
we are back with the one and only hunter pence and lexi pence, founder of pine apple labs. a baseball is him hundred and lexi will have the pop-up shop featuring their rise and grind blend. this coffee is done brewing. what am i doing wrong? >> should i come over and grab a cup? >> why is it not going down? it is pooling their. why is it pooling there? >> while you work with that -- >> we can't see you. >> yeah, we can't actually see you. maybe try stirring it's a little bit? are you doing a poor over? >> no. i have my little machine.
3:14 pm
sly, you guys lovis. is there a potential coffee shop in the future or perhaps a gaming cafc like you haven't used in? what are some of the other things now that you have decided you are planting your roots deep here and not going away. what might we see from you guys? >> well, we're definitely dipping our toe in this weekend, seeing if people want it, if there is a market for it. we will see and we will see how it goes. we are open to the idea. we will see how it goes. >> i have a baseball question. hunter, i want to know what you miss about playing and what you don't miss at all. >> you know, i would say i really miss the competition i love hitting batting practice on t that is so fun for me. the thing i actually really enjoy about not playing like a lot of time with alexis. a lot of time at home.
3:15 pm
it has been great. working on healing my body a little bit. i do like being part of the team. >> you guys, yay. it took me a while, it's working now. it's coming down it smells amazing. >> good. >> spencer, you get your coffee in two minutes. i want to ask you about some of our fun stories. what is the story, hunter, behind the mundane sites that were made by fans. hunter pence struggles with long division, remember those? >> yeah but it was 2014 and we were in new york. i think they just, some fans, were just trolling me. at the time i had grown a weird beard and weird here and i was chewing gum like a weirdo. i kind of seems like a space cadet.
3:16 pm
i didn't want people to know what i was thinking. it was kind of a freeing essence, because there is so much stress in baseball, to just let go a little bit. you relaxed me out on the field. i can look like this that i can't take myself too seriously. they put signs out like, you're looking at this winter weirdo, hunter pence puts catch up on his hot pocket. hunter pence makes pizza with a fork. we went around the city and took pictures. it was alexis's idea and we started writing around that we thought were funny. like hunter pence always returns his every books on time. when we went to the next city i thought it was going to be over with. and then was the same thing. >> everybody likes a guy who doesn't take himso sey. en on thfiel was unorodox e y ran, all of that was unorthodox yet, productive. incredible. >> spencer, come get some coffee.
3:17 pm
>> i will. >> i can't really explain that. there's no real explanation. all i did was the best i could do. it happened to look weird, so i just have to own it. my one thing was i have a lot of heart i knew i was never the best player, but i knew i loved to play. the way i pumped myself up is i would just be out there and be, like, i'm all heart but i'm all heart. whatever happens i'm all in. i would just talked myself going out there. i was talked to myself whenever doubts were there. play with heart, let's go. >> honestly, i think that's what people love about you. especially kids. the idea that you can control what you can control and you can just leave it all out there and do your best if you strike out you get bad luck you get bad calls or whatever, that's nothing you can control. you just go for it. we are going to taste this coffee. >> i really like it a lot.
3:18 pm
as hunter was saying earlier, from the aroma you get exactly what you're going to taste later. from the aroma i was getting like a combination of dark chocolate and earth and vanilla. >> yeah. a little nutty. i love it. >> good. i'm so glad to hear that. >> how much coffee do you guys drink? >> do you want to see how much coffee ipad today? >> today i have had a higher amount of coffee than usual. just because, it all depends, but usually i will have a hold -- i put eight cups in my pot and i drink the whole thing. i usually have one espresso on top of that. today i had eight cups and i finished it, we went to breakfast and tea and then she brought me back a parodi from st. franks. >> honestly, this is why you
3:19 pm
made your own coffee company, so you have an endless supply and nobody judges you. >> basically. yeah. >> we have a question from tom askingbackhe gits, pldone, done, done? >> that's a great question. >> if there is a random, actually, i'm getting really healthy and i get back -- the whole passion thing and going off after 2018 having a bad year and learning i was fresh and healthy. i over did it and lose some things out. it wasn't really possible to even make the move. maybe but i would say most likely done, done, done as far as playing. >> even if that is the case i'm sure people would think, oh, can hunter maybgits coac or affiliated with your
3:20 pm
organization in that way? >> i mean, i don't want to be like none of that, but if they ever want advice and i am in communication with a lot of them as far as small little things, helping here and there. i love learning from them. i really like scott they do the game, how they study the game, the whole staff there. they have tremendous, tremendous people. so, there is a potential if they ever need me. larry talks to me quite a bit. he is incredible. he helps me with little things throughout the city in different projects that we are doing. the giants are incredible to me and we are in communication. hopefully, something blossoms. we will see. as far as i'm concerned, i'm loving being a part of the community. we are very happy. >> awesome. we have to take a short break. don't go away. when we come back i am putting hunter, lexi, and spencer to the test pick who is the ndwh s u can join us on the abc 7
3:23 pm
we are back with our favorite supernormal, super generous, suitable a double adorable celebrity couple, hunter and lexi pence. you will be serving rice and grant the mall at baseball is him. first discovered in cooperstown i went on a trip there, they have a store there. which you better end up there or san francisco will seriously protest in a big way. i have some shirts from there. it really makes you think. this is hunter versus lexi versus spencer. every man or woman for themselves. you tell me what the teacher means. ready? >> can you guys see me? >> no. >> , th u. >> o >> leal? >> leave it's all.
3:24 pm
>> does that mean leave it all on the field? >> yes. >> yay, spencer. >> that's perfect for hedger >> this one i will describe. >> it's a mathmatica equation. -- >> i know that one. >> they know that one. it's a double play. a double play combination. 6-4-3 gets two out. >> i just saw this shirt at baseballism. >> spencer, you are kind of a try hard there. seriously. no. you guys, hunter, you have done some sports casting lately. right? i wonder if that's something you thought you might get into? >> that's what i was thinking. >> great minds like. >> i enjoy talking to game. i enjoy covering the games. i was extremely happy to be a part and follow that sweep of a
3:25 pm
series, the two game series against the rangers it's so fun right now how well the giants are doing. i'm very lucky that i got to work with a lot of the new staff. i have a connection with a lot of players and a lot of the new staff. i have a wealth of baseball knowledge, i think him and i like to share it one more geeky baseball question. what's with all the no-hitters this year? six no-hitters so far this season. sometimes you don't see one or two in a season. in fact, there were two in the last week. right? >> yeah. it's a pretty extra dairy. i have heard, because i haven't been on the field, but i was told they maybe have changed the baseball. people were complaining about the baseball and the many homers. the many no-hitters now. homers and no-hitters are all exciting. if you think they are not exciting ask people in those cities how exciting was the no- hitter that timmy through? they are a big deal and you never forget them. i think either way it's exciting. just enjoy the competition.
3:26 pm
no matter where there the ball is used in your hitting a bunch of homers or the ball is not that good both teams have the same ball. is going to be a great game. as far as this many, i think pitching is a little ahead with the biomechanics. i think that really done a good job with mastering a lot of the front frame being locked down. there just better right now with spin axis. you have to really be ahead of the game as a hitter to know how to battle these guys. >> so true. >> totally. >> i told you i'm a baseball geek i can't help it. >> i love it. >> folks, don't go away. you can join us on facebook you can join us on facebook live right now as we chat with my name is douglas.
3:27 pm
i'm a writer/director and i'm still working. in the kind of work that i do, you are surrounded by people who are all younger than you. i had to get help somewhere along the line to stay competitive. i discovered prevagen. i started taking it and after a period of time, my memory improved. it was a game-changer for me. prevagen. healthier brain. better life.
