dry winter coupled with previous dry winters. high temperatures and windy conditions. fire season is early. right now, exceptional drought. exceptional fire danger. brush fire flaring up in the north and east bays sparking fears of an early and explosive season to come. firefighters are getting to work. good morning, it's sunday, may 23. you're watching abc7 news. i'm liz kreutz. let's get to this fire conditions and a quick look at the weather. even though we don't have

the offshore winds, any wind at all, dries us out. it has been breezy out there. today, no exception. we have a marine layer. you can see the clouds along the coast. the low cloud deck has pushed across the bay into oakland. clear in concord as well as livermore. 43, nevada. 20 miles per hour san francisco. 22 gusts at concord. we will start with clouds. then we are sunny. low to mid-60s noontime. it stays cool at the coast. we will have breezy afternoon winds. today temperatures continue to and up a little, getting closer to average. we will talk about your monday which should be the warmest day the weekend with the winds will do for the rest of the week, coming up. we start in the north bay.

sonoma county is under control after destroying at least one building along the weay and healdsburg. flames broke out yesterday afternoon. at one point forcing a temporary closure 101 over concerns of spot fires. flames scorched firefighters at the upper hand. nobody was hurt. investigators are trying to determine if it started in the building that burned or brush nearby and then spread. another reminder that this year is setting up for one of the earliest and potentially longest fire seasons on record. a year after the most destructive season ever, the state can barely take much more. abc7 news laura anthony has that part of the story. >> reporter: it's go time for these goats as they play fire s heating up months ahead of schedule. with fires like this eight acre event on a may day that wasn't particularly warm, all signs

thousands of people in a major city spent the night outdoors after a volcano erupted. molten lava sent homes on fire as it slowly spread. officials say the eruption seems to have subsided.

the volcano last eruption in 2002 killed 250 people and left 100,000 people homeless. it's one of the most active volcanoes and considered among the most dangerous. we hope everybody is okay. san francisco is a just dealing with the pandemic. data shows there's a deadlier crisis at hand. drug overdoses have been deadlier and this year could be worse than last. the chronicle reports a city is on track to suppress the record- breaking overdose deaths. there have been at least 252 deaths from january until april compared to 181 over the same time period last year. over a dose deaths started to spike in 2019 when fentanyl enter the drug supply. the public health department is working on maximizing prevention and intervention. new details inside a grocery store. they are apologizing to a black child falsely accused of shoplifting in a san francisco

>> probably the biggest threat that our state parks are facing is the threat of a changing climate. we are seeing droughts and more extreme heat and sea level rise. all of those things pose a huge threat to these special places and to the plants and animals that call them home. >> this last year we had the worst fire season in california's history. 28 state parks were affected by wildfire. big basin, the oldest state park in california was completely burned. i think of big basin is being an opportunity to create a park that looks like the parks of the future for california. parks that are truly sustainable. that protect resources, allow the public to come and enjoy these places. we are looking at a number of the threats we have in state parks and thinking about not

just prevention, but adaptation. the world is changing. >> we are at candlestick point recreation area in the 70s it became the first urban state park. over here we have yosemite slough, california state parks foundation has been working with the local community to restore it to its natural systems. what we have done over here is taken away the seawalls and restored acres and acres of wetlands. we modeled this park so we can see how the natural systems can absorb the sea level rise, extreme title events i come in. urban parks like candlestick point are essential for the health and wellness of local communities. >> all of these plans, literally thousands of california native plants, taking them into the field and stically he en excluded klands.
