>> right now, exceptional drought, fire danger, brush fires flaring up in the north and east bay. sparking fear of early and explosive fire season that could come. firefighters are already getting to work. >> good morning. it's may 23. thank you for joining us. i'm liz kreutz.. you are watching abc7 news live on abc7, hulu live, or hulu wherever you stream. let's get to the fire conditions and a look at the forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. we will have the typical onshore flow but that will bring an afternoon sea breeze, keeping the winds breezy. live doppler 7 picking up on the fog that has made a minor push across the bay. here's. live look from walnut creek where you can see the beginning of the sun coming up. 51, san francisco. 53, oakland. mt. tam, not a lot of fog out there.

just a little marine layer. 51 by the delta. 53, livermore. it is breezy in concord. wind gusts to 24 miles per hour. look at the hazy emeryville. we will clear out and have sunny skies. numbers at the coast cool. low to mid 60s around the bay and inland. numbers come up slightly to the upper 60s to upper 70s and 80 inland. we start in the north bay where a windswept fire is under control after destroying at least one building. along the western side of highway 101 between windsor and healdsburg. flames broke out yesterday at one point forcing a tempot fires. flame scorched 10 acres before firefighters got the upper hand. nobody was hurt. investigators are trying to determine if it started in the fire that burned in rushed

nearby and spread. that fire is a reminder that this year setting up for one of the earliest and potentially longest fire seasons on record. a year after the most destructive season ever, the stay can barely take much more. abc7 lori anthony has that story. >> reporter: it is go time for these goats. as they play a key role in a fire season that is heating up months ahead of schedule. with fires like this eight acre event on a day that wasn't particularly warm. all signs are pointing to is fire season that's approaching its peak way too early. >> we are experiencing fire danger and behavior we normally don't see until june or july. >> reporter: the fire district is ramping up with ongoing wildfire training and hiring of separate hand crews to supplement those by cal fire.

it's a special series california dreaming. taking a closer look at things threatening the california dream and the people working to keep the dream alive. this morning a focus on our state parks. they are some of the best in the country but face hurts from climate change and lack of funding. with a new state budget proposal, there is hope. >> state parks to the history and a story of california in landscapes and cultural sites. there's almost 300 miles of coastline in california that is state park land. there are parks where there are giant sequoias. there are state parks where you can see gorges desert scenes. you can think of the system is having a lot of the magical

places in california set-aside for the public to enjoy. >> probably the biggest threat that our state parks are facing climate. we are seeing droughts. more extreme heat and sea level rise. all of those pose a huge threat to the special places and to the plants and animals that call them home. >> this last year we had the worst fire season in california's history. 28 state parks were affected by wildfire. big basin, the oldest state park in california was completely burned. i think a big basin as being an opportunity to create a park that looks like the parks of the future for california. parks that are sustainable. parks that protect the resources. parks that allow the public to come and enjoy these places. we are looking

threats we have in state parks, and thinking about, not just prevention, but adaptation. the world is changing. >> we are at candlestick point state recreation area. in this 1970s it became the first urban state park. over here, we have california state park foundation that has been working with the local community to restore it to to natural systems. what we have done over here is taken away the seawalls and restored acres of wetlands. we have modeled this park so that we can see how the natural systems can absorb the sea level rise and extreme tidal events i come in. urban parks like candlestick point are essential places for the health and wellness of our local community. >> all of these plans which are literally thousands of california data plans, taking them in the field and out planting them in parklands.
