took place this morning in san jose. eight people shot and killed. the suspect dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. investigators are still on the scene and they will be for quite some time. this happened at the vta railyard in san jose. that is not far from the suspect's home which you will see in just a few moments. that home went up in flames before the shooting this morning. we have some video into abc 7 news. says a little bit eerie but i will share it with you. this was a neighbor who had a nest camera up from across the street. you are going to see the suspect. it is a little bit jittery here. he was leaving his house and

shortly after this the house will go up in flames. what are your observations as you see this video? >> wow! he is carrying that duffel bag. we can only guess what was in the duffel bag. equipment he was going to use, firearms most likely that he eventually used a short time later at the facility. larry, just watching him act normally walking to his pickup truck in his uniform and wearing a mask. >> the ultimate irony is he was trying to be safe as he left or just look normal. that could be another motive. police have said there were multiple weapons found on the scene. you might presume that is what was in the bag he was carrying and wearing the gear that the light rail personnel would aware. looking ordinary. this is all about at 6:30 in the morning. this is probably a little earlier than that given he had 10-11 miles to drive to the

throughout the valley as the community comes to terms with one of the deadliest mass shootings in bay areaarea >> the perpetrator bears the ultimate responsibility for doing what he did. >> after 6:30 this morning santa clara sheriff's deputies responded to the facility after receiving multiple 911 calls alerting them to an active shooter. sheriff lori smith said the alleged shooter turned the gun on himself as law enforcement entered the building. authorities say 8 victims were killed across multiple locations on the property.the p. according to the sheriff deputies came in as shots were being fired. >> they know that is their job to put their life on the line to try to save other people. i think we have a lot of officers who are euros today. >> a vta employees that it took

place during the busiest time of the day at the corporation yard as operators and maintenance workers were preparing for the start of the days service. the mayor was in shock over the tragedy but urged for action to be taken. >> a lot of people are suffering right now. families have d es. colleagues have lost friends. we will need to come together. >> officials responded to a fire at the alleged suspects home not too long before the shooting. gov. gavin newsom rushed to the bay to be with families of the victims. >> what is going on in the united states of america? what is wrong with us? when are we going to come to grips with this? when will we put down our arms literally and figuratively.and . our politics, stale rhetoric and finger-pointing. on the handwringing consternation that produces nothing except more fury and frustration. more scenes like this repeated over and over again. i say that not is a gov. but i say that is a father of 4. i say that is a meof e itwhde about it.

>> reporter: a fund has been set up by the south bay labor council in order to help support the victims families. we will put a link to it on our website abc7news.com. for now, we are live in san jose. i am chris nguyen. the shooting unfolded quickly. the first 911 shots fired calls from the yard came in around 6:34 this morning. minutes later at 636 five crews were caught to the fire at the shooters san jose home. the fire was out by 7:27 but bomb technician crews were out at the home for hours later. back at the vta yard, the sheriff says the shooter was declared down by 8:08 a.m. we monitored the initial dispatch calls and this is what it sounded like.sounded like.so. >> they are still coming this 101 west younger ave. for the light rail maintenance yard. have three coats three ambulances plus duties to

assist an active shooter peak reportedly eight employees at the light of where the shooter is right now. pd has multiple units code 3 and some on the scene investigating. employees are evacuating to the parking lot. it sounds like there may be active shots hurt again just right now. >> they are closing down younger. they are saying the shooter is on the third floor. still another active shot heard. we will get ambulances. in looks like again shots are still being fired. >> i don't know if this is helpful. 57 k-3 saying we need a triage on the west side of the building but i am unsure. >> younger, i see td is advising the scene isis

more lives put at risk. that is a part of the reason this is going to take an extended amount of time to get through and find all of the evidence involved. >> they are taking their time at the home of the suspect as well. we are learning more about the suspect. the suspect is samuel j. cassidy. a house fire was set shortly before the shootings not too far away from the vta railyard. laura anthony joins us live with more on what we have learned at the home. >> reporter: hi kristin. we have heard a lot in the last few minutes. got some chilling video from a neighbor. that is the video of the suspect leaving his home casually just after 6:30 in the morning. we think this video was shot. it is surveillance video from this neighbor. it shows this man leaving his home casually with a duffel bag, putting the duffel bag in his truck, driving away as if he were heading off to work. then it later, this neighbor gave us a separate piece of video he took from his cell phone as he was leaving this

morning. that shows this home across the street fully engulfed in flames. we think the cell phone video came. there is confusion but the cell phone video was shot maybe a few minutes after the surveillance video that showed the man living in the house believed to be sam cassidy casually leaving as if he were going to work. this is what he had to tell us about what he saw this morning. >> i saw him. i talked to him and said hi but he never talked to me and said hi. he would look and stare at me all the time. never said hi. it just wouldn't say anything. he kind of looked like a scary person. he lived alone. i never saw his friends. i never saw his families. i never saw anybody come house. he lived alone probably 20

years. >> what happened the one time when you were describing you were trying to back your car out. >> he was yelling at me do not come to my driveway. you have to get out! >> i took off. after that i never talked to him since then. >> one with that? >> that was about six months ago. after that i never said hi and i ignored him. >> we're back live at the scene down the street. they were pushed back said out of an abundance of caution for our own safety we have seen bomb squad technicians coming from san jose police, the atf, the fbi. they are all here. there are going through this house. we have seen bomb or explosive sniffing dogs. all of those have arrived in the past several hours to do what is going to be a very thorough investigation. as for what they found inside of this house, no one out here

is saying but we do know from previous statements by the mar d veators at d me ammunition inside of the home as well as some kind of fuel canisters. i talked with a san jose battalion chief who was a part of the responding firefighters this morning and he could not say whether they thought an accelerant was used to start that fire but up rather quickly and in fact went to alarms rather quickly because as the fire battalion chief told me, they were concerned about the house next door. it was starting to catch on fire. a lot of developments this afternoon. that video from the neighbor paints quite a picture. as does the interview with the neighbor that described

been recovered and/or identified. this process may take a while in creating that much more anguish for loved ones text and called and feverishly trying to get some word on whether their family members are okay at this point. >> they have to render the area safe and make sure there are no threats in the form of a bomb or something else before they can deal with the identification of victims. this is very tough for the families eagerly awaiting news. as we know, 8 victims are dead plus the gunmen. stephanie sierra is live for us at a family reunification center that is at 70 west heading. she joins us now with what she is being there. >> reporter: yes. we have seen families come throughout the day to the reunification center just right here at the county administration building.

they have come here searching for some sort of answer. an answer to whether their mother, brother or uncle is safe alive. sadly, there has been little clarity as you can imagine is this is very early on in the investigation. unfortunately, for these families, they have been waiting for more than 9 hours at this point for any trace of their loved one. i just spoke with san jose city councilman role paralysis shared a story about a childhood friend who is a vta employee. he actually spoke about it early this morning during the press conference. unfortunately, moments ago, he heard his friend is not in good shape and he is at the hospital but they have no word. it is stories like that that are so painful. you can't begin to imagine what these families are going through. it is similar to the story we have been following since this morning. the family has been trying to search for their uncle. they have no word from his cell phone. here is what they shared today.

>> i hope he can pull through this and i hope you can come back home and be there for everyone. everyone misses you and everyone loves you. your kids really need you. your family needs you. >> just to remind you, for those joining us, the family came here and they were able to identify their uncles phone across the street where the shooting happened at the vta light rail facility. they could see it was on. it was not moving . yet, they had no word from him. i spoke to them a little while ago and still, nothing at this point. it is a lot of waiting. a very painful period of time. the county administration building you see behind me, most of the families have left. they have ever gone home they have either gone home or gone to the family assistance center that the red cross is putting

employee and their family members. the reunification center is inside. i have been in there talking with different employees. it is very difficult for everyone to wrap their heads around and understand what is happened. i want to say again i am so sorry for what has occurred but i am proud of our employees. >> he is grateful for the outpouring of support that has come in from all across the country from union leadership and other transportation agencies. >> gov. gavin newsom spoke in san jose this afternoon. called the tragedy part of the pandemic of gun violence and called for change. he said he had met with some families waiting to hear about the status of their loved ones. >> i wanted to briefly speak to the pain of those victims. we just had the privilege of spending the last few hours with victims that are waiting to just learn if their loved one is still alive. they are dialing the phones. they can't find it. they are trying to go on and find a phone of the loved one. they are waiting to hear from

francisco. when i come to san jose i am a little lost. i don't know where things are. it is very hard for them. one of the family members told me not knowing of the condition or if my he told me i keep on calling him on his cell phone and it rings and rings. it doesn't even go to voicemail. it just rings and rings. again, very hard for those family members. the red cross is telling them that if they have any questions or concerns, the best thing they can do right now is to come here to the red cross and ask for help. let's turn to david louis. he has been checking on the victims at valley medical center. larry, if you know, two people left the

were brought here to valley medical center which is one of the three trauma centers in the south bay which are very well equipped to handle traumatic injuries especially gunshot wounds in this type of incident. we do not know the identity of the two people who were not here. when did pass away upon arrival. the other person is here being treated and is in critical condition. that condition has not changed all throughout the hours he has been here. it has been almost 10 hours a since that time. we do not know whether they are making progress are not. we can imagine he has loved we have not been able to find any members of the family but as you can imagine they're going tosatrmaan e me type of stss everyone has gonethrough today whether family members were killed or injured. we do know the trauma center is always equipped to handle as many cases as are brought here. the have been able to focus on one patient alone and provide whatever necessary procedures

and medical equipment is needed whether it is blood, transfusion of that type of thing. quite an impressive operation here. i checked with stafford and regional medical center and neither of them received --. as best we can tell the sole survivor is here at valley medical center. that is all we know at this point. we are hoping we get some better news. let's hope that person hangs in there. i appreciated. is spoke about the shooting calling it a dark day. >> this is a very dark moment for our city and our community. we have already seen how people are pulling together in this very tough time.

these are and were essential workers. these employees help us get through the horrific pandemic. they were showing up every day to operate light rail and buses to ensure people could still continue to live out their lives amid all of the challenges of the pandemic and they were taking risks with their own lives in doing so. our police officers and sheriff's deputies responded. we will learn more through this investigation about what exactly happened and how. i can't help but think they very well may have saved more harm from happening. of course we have counselors already hard at work supporting families and loved ones who are struggling with the trauma

people are dead. it happened during a shift change. there were a lot of people. there were about 44 people there at the time. at the time they arrived on scene they were getting people out and the shots were still being fired. shortly after the gunman identified as samuel j. cassidy identified himself and he was killed. at least one person is in critical condition at valley medical center. what we do know at that location is they are carefully going through the scene because suspicions of a bomb possibly explosives detected and possibly a head on the suspect vehicle with the dog that sniffed a potential bomb. sources that he also had multiple weapons so they are carefully going to that area before being able to identify the victims. vta light rail cars are not running and it may be a while. glenn hendrix made the announcement. >> the vta has suspended the

light rail service and will probably be suspended for several days as we work through being able to get back into the yard. we will be setting up bus bridges to help get customers around. >> hendrix is asking the customers please try to be patient in the days ahead as they work through this to try to get their service back up to speed. managers have been tweeting about today's shooting. bart gm bob powers extended his heartfelt condolences. the gm of ac transit wrote words can express their heartache. they offer steadfast support and in grief shock and sadness. caltrans shared this and they offer condolences as well. they said our hearts are with you. >> unfortunately the bay area no stranger to mass shootings in public places. that have been five in the last 10 years.

2008 11 a man killed three coworkers during a safety meeting at lehigh cement in cupertino. there was a shooting in oakland in march 2012 that left seven people dead. in 2017 a ups worker shot and killed three coworkers at a company facility in san francisco. the last attack two years ago a gunman killing the gilroy garlic festival. as we touched on earlier, a majority of californians want stronger gun control. a new study released showing 63% of those surveyed say they think laws covering gun sales should be stricter. that goes up to 86% of people in the bay area. the public policy institute of california survey says people in the bay area and l.a. favor stricter gun selloffs. 22% of people in the bay area say they are very concerned. we are somewhat concerned about the threat of a mass shooting in the area and that goes up to

50% statewide. >> a new california law went into effect in september. makes it easier for court in california to take away somebody's gun temporarily if they are deemed to be a potential danger. >> this is one of many tools we can use to prevent gun violence. they have been shown to work for what they have been en 00 ses e entire state of california and my lodges went into effect last september which allowed coworkers and people you go to school with to petition the court to take your guns away. that is why it is so critical. there are so many cases of workplace shootings. that is why i worked so hard. it took me three times to get the law passed and signed by
