12 hours ago now eight people were shot and killed during a shift change. the shooter is also dead. investigators think he shot himself. officials are still attempting to notify family members and no victims names have been publicly released. >> the one name we do know, samuel j. cassidy is the suspected shooter. the inspection continues for explosives, weapons and any evidence about why he left his home, went to work and started shooting. a neighbor's surveillance video captured his departure as well as the fire that erupted at the house moments later. >> that home is just 11 miles from the site of the shooting on w. younger ave. as you can see on the map. we have live team coverage at those locations, the crime scene and the suspects house. with laura anthony and chris nguyen. leah melendez is also live from the family assistance center which has been set up at the

more on abc7 news at 11:00. how emotional of a day this must have been for that woman. >> you would think there would be a lot of emotion and maybe even some tiers on her part that she didn't shed a tier today. she feels as though she is fortunate to have really escaped with her life and with her words. she knew him back in 2009 and really, the main emotion from her is a sense of relief that she escaped harm. of course, she said she was sexually assaulted in 2009 from him but said it could have been much more serious and she has sincere feelings about the victims, the eight victims that lost their lives apparently at the hands of sam cassidy today. >> think you. >> the crime scenes in san jose will stay active for quite a period of time. investigators warned that us about that today. chris nguyen has been at the shooting site

after receiving multiple 911 calls alerting them to an active shooter. sheriff lori smith says the alleged shooter turned the gun on himself as law enforcement entered the building. >> authorities now say eight victims were killed across multiple locations on the property. according to the sheriff deputies came in as the shots were still being fire. >> they know that is their job to put their selves -- their life on the line to save other people. i think we had a a lot of officers who are heroes. >> a employees said the shooting took place during the busiest time of the day at the corporation yard as operators and maintenance workers were preparing for the start of the days service. the mayor was in shock over the tragedy but urged for action to be taken. >> a lot of people are

suffering right now. families have lost loved ones. colleagues have lost friends and we will really need to come together and help support each other. >> fire officials responded to a fire at the alleged suspects home not too long before the shooting. the governor spending some time this afternoon with the victims families. >> to those who lost their lives and the families who lost their loved ones. yes, our hearts go out but we are resolved to not make this meaningless but to meet bring meaning at this tragic moment. >> law enforcement officials tell abc news that the suspect had multiple weapons registered under his name and that the atf and others are now trying to account for them. we are live in san jose. i am chris nguyen, abc 7 news. >> this is obviously a tough time for everybody who works for them. what is being done to make sure they are safe tonight? >> a great question. we have learned in the past hour that out of an abundance of caution, the vta is having bomb sniffing dogs go through

alopties. that work will continue into the evening. >> chris, thank you. as we showed you earlier, the vta yard is not far from the shooter's house which is itself a crime scene at this hour. >> it is partly because the house caught fire moments after he left for work this morning. his neighbor's home security camera captured the flames smoke and responding firefighters. laura anthony has been at the house for hours as investigators arrived. laura, what can you see now? >> we have actually been pushed back 300 feet is what san jose police told us we needed to go back down the street to be safe. that was earlier this afternoon. also this afternoon we obtained the stunning video from this neighbor across the street. his name is doug. it is surveillance video. he told me this morning when i first talked to him that he had cameras trained on the house across the street. it was a neighbors house. that of the suspect in the shooting. when he got home this afternoon he went and looked at the cameras and this is what he saw. it is his neighbor presumably

sam cassidy. it appears is even dressed in his work uniform and he quietly is going about his business putting stuff in his truck. a few minutes later this video on his cell phone. this shows the house -- cassidy's house going up in smoke and flames. this was a two alarm fire. it was quite an event. he talked to us about an uncomfortable encounter he had with his neighbor a few months ago. >> i talked to him five times but he never talks to me to say hi. he stared at me all the time. never said hi. just didn't say anything. kind of scary. he looks like a scary person. he lived alone. i never saw his friends. and never saw his family. and never saw anybody come to his house. lived alone. >> what happened the one time you were describing when you

we out? >> he yelled at me don't come to my driveway. you have to get out. i took off. after that i haven't talked to him since then. >> when was that? >> that was maybe about six months ago. after that i never said hi. i ignored him. >> >> here is some video we actually shot also earlier this afternoon. these are the bomb technicians going in. you can see they are heavily clad outfitted in those outfits. the bomb protection outfits. we saw investigators from sky 7 combing the suspects backyard. at different points we saw them actually carrying some items. it looks like orange sandbags into the property. we can only speculate that those maybe some kind of protective sandbags in case they decided they need to detonate something. we do know from the mayor earlier today and investigators that they did find some quantity of ammunition as well as some fuel tanks inside of this home of sam cassidy.

back life here we can show you what it looks like looking down the street. i am about a football field away at this point pushed back to this distance earlier today because they told us it was for our own safety. you can see there are a number of investigators and no indication that this is going to wrap up anytime soon. we have seen san jose fire and police as well as federal investigators. the scene is really only growing in recent hours. atf and fbi are all here. they are all here. >> we saw things going into the house. have you seen investigators bring anything out of the house? >> not necessarily. we think we saw them bring out a few evidence bags earlier today. we believe they would be evidence backs. those paper bags you see the investigators bring out of the buildings when they are bringing things out. have also been pretty careful to create sort of a barrier between us and what they are doing. they have had some large trucks

and things blocking our way. again for the most part what we saw was them bringing these bags into this home. this appears to be an investigation that is going to go on for many hours and perhaps many days. >> it seems like it. laura, thank you . two locations have been set up for victims families to provide with support and of course information. leanne melendez is live at one of them that is located at the red cross tonight. >> this is where the red cross is telling families to come to get support and the information -- any new information they may have. i want to focus on one particular family so you can understand the level of frustration. nearly 12 hours have gone by and this family has not heard

from their cousin who by the way is a train operator. again, put yourself in their place if you will for a moment. the level of anxiety they are going through not knowing. some of the family members came from the central valley hoping to get more information about their cousin who lives in the bay area. he is married and has two small children. his shift is from 4:00 a.m.- 12:00. they have not heard from him despite numerous calls to his cell phone. let's listen to his cousin. >> right now there is no news of where they are. we are here together to help each other right now. >> by the way, his family -- that man has four family members who work for vta. three of them were not working this morning. we don't want to get too close. you are looking at live pictures right now of the family hugging. i have no idea. i cannot confirm whether or not the news is good or bad

them crying. i see them hugging. i see them grieving. again, i don't know at this moment what is going on. i will approach them and i will let you know later but that is all i have right now. at this moment it doesn't look good. >> that is just gut wrenching. any of us who have done these scenes it is just terrible. what is the center? can you be a little more specific? what are they doing for them? >> when i talk about support it means they are offering grief counseling, mental health counseling counseling and victim compensation who for anyone who needs it. i am also told this red cross the center will be open for the next two days for these families from 11:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. at this point i think we will be here for a

10 years. in 2011 a man killed three coworkers during a safety meeting at lehigh cementing cupertino. he was shot to death by police in a gunfight. shooting at only? university in oakland in march 2012 left seven people dead. he was sentenced to rest of his life in prison under a plea deal. in 2017 a ups worker shot and killed coworkers at a company facility in san francisco. a union official says 38-year- old jimmy lamb filed a grievance claiming he was working excessive overtime. he told himself after police told him to put the gun down. >> the last attack happened to years ago. and gunman killed three people and wounded 17 others before taking his own life during a shootout with police. the gm issues a statement that is your screen.

now abc7, live breaking news. today's shooting at the san jose vta railyard unfolded quickly. the first 911 shots fired calls from the vta yard came in about 6:34 this morning. minutes later, fire crews were caught out to the buyer the shooter's home in san jose. >> about by 7:27 that crews were out at the home for hours later. that shooter was declared down by 8:08 a.m. deputies rushed into the building to rescue victims. eight people were killed. >> they did not wait. they went into the scene and rendered first aid and rescue victims out of the building as fast as they can to figure out what was going on. >> at noon, vta shutdown light rail service until further notice. it is expected the shutdown

at 11:00. we obtained this video this afternoon of the suspect. it was taken from a surveillance camera around 5:40 from the house across the street. >> the suspect is walking to his truck carrying a bag and appears to be wearing work clothes in a mask. the video freezes from time to time. it was recorded about an hour before the fire being reported. >> the neighbor told us the suspect lived alone and he never saw anyone at the house. he admitted he was a little afraid of his neighbor. the last time was when he was backing his car out of the driveway and said this shooter began yelling at him telling him not to come in his driveway. >> eight people will not be returning home today because of the shooting. their families are left worrying and wondering. stephanie sierra has been live

all day for us at the family green vacation center blocks from the shooting scene where families can go to get information. stephanie, what are you seeing? >> reporter: is are going on 11+ hours still with no any indication if their loved one is safe. one woman described the call and said she wished his voicemail would automatically play so she knew he would hear her voice just something happens to him. again, she doesn't know. that is the case for all of these families. they are stuck awaiting. most families have left the unification center but six groups did stay for most of the day. the san diego councilman and the -- family have been in touch all day. says his childhood friend is one of the victims and is in tough shape. >> we have no idea. we have been trying to reach

them. they have no idea at all because we know he was there and he we have been trying to contact him since it happen. you haven't been returning any cause. no text messages or anything. that was the nephew of the families who we met earlier. still awaiting any sign of their uncle as they have been closely tracking the green dot it was there. it is still there but they have yet to hear from him. that was 11 hours ago. it has been difficult for each and every family that is struggling through this. i will say, as tragic as this entire day has been, we have seen signs of the community really banding together. law enforcement saying i am not going to leave. i will be here to get any

liz kreutz has been tracking what lawmakers have been saying about this including president joe biden and vice president harris. liz is in the newsroom. >> president joe biden has been briefed and is following the shooting. he has ordered flags at the white house to have staff. you can see video we have from earlier in the day. this is the fifth time he has done so as president after a mass shooting. he did so after the shootings in georgia, colorado, south carolina, and indiana. in a statement he released, the president said there are at least eight families who will never be whole again. they are good honest hard- working people morning their own. he went on to say enough and urged congress to help and this pandemic of gun violence. >> vice president harris also addressed the shooting today mentioning it is personal to her as a y ea ve >> it is absolutely tragic. it is tragic. i have family that live in san jose. i have worked for many, many years. my prayers and my thoughts -- with all of those families who have been affected

>> chaucer tweeted out about the need for gun control and so did congressman's small well. he said enough is enough. we don't have to live like this and it is time for senate republicans to find the courage to act. jackie spears spoke earlier with kristen sze and larry beil about the number one change she would like to see. >> closing these loopholes. everyone has to have a background check there is a loophole for those who would be eligible to buy again by going to gun shows or to the internet. >> those loopholes she wants closed. the executive director of the pro-gun lobbying group, gunowners of california believes this is not about gun control. he said california has the strictest gun laws in the country and yet it still doesn't stop something like this. should point out a recent survey found 6 in 10 californians favor stricter gun laws. 7 in 10 people in the san francisco bay area do. >> both sides will dig in as

they always do after these tragedies. let's talk a little more about gun sales. they have gone up over the past post, 2 million firearms were bought in january alone. that is an 80% increase. it is believed to be the combination of factors. it led to a lot of panic buying. the violence following george floyd, capital riots in january and the new biden administration and fears that he may crackdown from gun sales. all of that has played a role. >> the district attorney says the investigation will involve looking into the sugars background to see if there were any warning signs because those could have allowed someone to take action. >> in california we have red flag laws that allow an individual seeing someone if they see they are becoming mentally unstable and talking about hurting or shooting people, they can contact the police will go to a judge and

within hours you can remove those guns from the person's possession. we have done that hundreds of times in this county in the last couple of years and we have stopped dozens of mass shootings. >> the south bay congressman told us the suspect should not have been in possession of the weapons. he said he had been fighting for the law since he became office five years ago. >> we have been told why someone like the suspect would have access to these guns and weapons. there are reports he may have had a domestic violence incident. he obviously was prone to violence. there is no way someone like that should have a gun that can kill in seconds. we need to have a universal background check can really destroy communities in seconds.

evening hours and high clouds will continue to screen through the bay area sky. low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s. tomorrow's highs down in the south bay we'll see has up to 74 in san jose. on the peninsula maybe mainly upper 60s. 71 palo alto. upper 50s on the coast. downtown san francisco will top out at 62 degrees. and the northbay 82. eight at napa. east bay highs oakland 68. inland east bay we'll see highs in the low to mid 80s for the most part. we will skip ahead to saturday which will be relatively mild to cool. on sunday, high temperatures will move into the low to mid 90s in the. mid seven days around the bay shoreline. the coastal not warm-up much. monday we will see several locations reaching or exceeding 100 degrees. fairfield likely to hit 100 or 100 to.

finally tonight, a few thoughts about what really matters. once again, we are in a familiar and dark moment in america. this time it is not in some distance city but right here at home, our friends, our neighbors shattered. eight people who left for work this morning in san jose with no way to know that they would not be coming home. eight people who survived the pandemic but would not survive a day at the office. politicians will tell us we must take action so this never happens again. of course, it will happen again. god forbid it may happen again tomorrow. our leaders are right about one thing. we have to do something. this cannot be the tr as the governor said from the scene today, what the is going on in the united states of america? what the indeed. the right answers are hard to agree on and i certainly don't have them but i do know, what really matters is enough is enough. follow me on twitter and
