>> investigators say the gunman took his own life. a ninth shooting victim is in critical condition at the hospital. and tonight the county released the names of eight people who were killed. 42-year-old paul de la cruz. >> among the dead is 63-year-old lars keppler lane who according to his intake was a journey man lineman. 40-year-old michael joseph were also killed. loved ones shared tribute to them today. we have live team coverage on the shooting including an exclusive interview with a

within to the shooting. we're going to win with jr stone live in san jose with new information about the victim victims. >> reporter: yes, a hero among those victims. i can tell you it is quiet outside of this cross location directly behind me. this is where the victim's family members received updates around 6:00 pm this evening. sadly it was at that time that so many families were told their loved ones didn't make it. 36-year-old singh's memory will live on in this picture. the husband, father of two, and light rail operator was one of eight employees killed wednesday morning. family members say singh's cowos who escaped told them he saved at least one person and tried to save others both by calling and helping them. >> one lady in the control room,

fire indiscriminately. >> i do know that he had a specific agenda and was targeting certain people. he walked by other people. he let other people live. he gunned down other people. >> reporter: he says this should not be a story about gun control but about how bpa treats its employees and how they treat each other. >> sometimes they're brutal to one another. and i know certain shops have a certain culture about them. and it's a union trade deal. that is all part of the core of blue collar workers. and that's how things go. >> reporter: he believes that cassidy snapped because of treatment on the job. he is a veteran of the air force. he tells me this is a gun-free zone. he wishes he was carrying a weapon at the time.

routine shift chang employees. the sheriff's office quickly initiated the county's active shooter protocol. we're told deputies arrived while shots were still being fired. finding multiple people had been hit. the sheriff said the gunman shot and killed eight people before turning the gun on himself. 40 others had been rescued by responding agencies. >> they know that's their job, to put their life on the line to try to save other people. >> reporter: they also had security teams sweeping all of its facilities with bomb-sniffing dogs. the fbi and a, it f process the scene. on wednesday, governor newsom clearing a scheduled press conference. >> when are we gonna put down

younger avenue. laura anthony has been at that home all day long. are investigators still on the scene? >> reporter: the scene has changed dramatically. in just the past hour or so, the road here is now open to through traffic. and the police presence here, the investigative presence has been reduced significantly. just one lone san jose police car blocking this court where sam cassidy lived. this is all quite a contrast to the scene that unfolded here early today. loading up his truck to head off to work. shortly after, surveillance cameras captured these images, the house burst

into flames. heavy smoke billowed from the windows. >> i was gonna play golf this morning. i look outside, it start smoking from outside. my wife told me look at outside it's smoking outside. >> reporter: the flames were so intense, firefighters could not go inside. >> when our unit arrived on-scene, they encountered very heavy fire conditions. we chose to fight the fire defensively from outside the house because of conditions. >> reporter: the mass shooting just 11 miles away. the bomb squad followed by thea, tf and fbi. it soon became clear that this house would become a major crime scene. >> i had no idea those two were correlated. it's reallyo ide that type of stuff happened right across the street from my house.

>> reporter: images of bomb technicians showing what appear to be sandbags, perhaps to buffer detonation. law enforcement confirmed ammunition and fuel tanks were among the contents of the house. for neighbors, their seemingly reclusive neighbor. >> what happened when you were trying to back your car out? >> oh, he yelled at me, do not come into my driveway. you have to get out. so i took off. >> reporter: it's all quiet here tonight compared to the scene that unfolded through the most of the day. most of the investigators are gone for the night. at least this is no doubt a complex investigation inside of sam cassidy's home. you have to remember that the scene inside is mostly gutted by fire. so whatever evidence they're looking for in there, they're going to have to literally sift

a different perspective tonight on shooting suspect, dan cassidy, from a san jose man who worked with him in the past. >> i knew the shooter quite well. >> reporter: an electrical subcontractor, he says cassidy worked in the substation from 2013 to 2014. >> i had a nice experience with him. he was great. he helped us out. he helped with a couple of other guys, and he did a great job. i was stunned. >> reporter: he had another job a mile from the light rail yard when he heard of the shooting. >> then i saw the fire at the same time. >> reporter: the fire was reportedly set by cassidy at his own home before he went to the yard and opened fire. eventually turning the gun on himself. he says cassidy worked directly with many of the shooting

a breaking news update on the shooting. a ninth person who was gunned down has now died. 49-year-old alex ward fritz had been taken to valley medical center with critical wounds. tonight he has succumbed to his injuries. the suspect has been identified as daniel j. cassidy who was a main worker at the yard. he reportedly opened fire on coworkers and then took his own life as officers arrived. light rail service has been suspended. buses will be available. >> we'll continue to bring you the latest on this developing story. our coverage continues tomorrow morning. 5:00 am. >> that'll do it for us for now. thank you so much for joining us this evening.
