and tonight the county released the names of eight people who were killed. 42-year-old paul de la cruz. >> among the dead is 63-year-old lars keppler lane who according to his intake was a journey man lineman. 40-year-old michael joseph were also killed. loved ones shared tribute to them today. we have live team coverage on the shooting including an exclusive interview with a within to the shooting. we're going to win with jr stone live in san jose with new information about the victim victims. >> reporter: yes, a hero among

those victims. i can tell you it is quiet outside of this cross location directly behind me. this is where the victim's family members received updates around 6:00 pm this evening. sadly it was at that time that so many families were told their loved ones didn't make it. 36-year-old singh's memory will live on in this picture. the husband, father of two, and light rail operator was one of eight employees killed wednesday morning. family members say singh's cowos who escaped told them he saved at least one person and tried to save others both by calling and helping them. >> one lady in the control room, she hide over here, you know? he can go there too. but he just save her, and after that, he go toward downstairs. >> reporter: it doesn't appear as though he made it downstairs.

michael was another victim killed. he was a lifelong friend of raul perales. >> it's been more and more difficult. it's something i have not been able to process just yet. >> reporter: san jose mayor locardo spend much of the afternoon with family members of the victims. his tone a somber one when we spoke. >> i spoke with vice president harris, she called me very early in the day, sending her love and support. >> reporter: the singh family holding one another after they learned the news. saying he was a good person who you could call any time. someone who will be sorely missed. >> reporter: you heard about mr. singh there. he leaves behind two children, a three-year-old

son and one-year-old daughter. our thoughts and prayers are with them tonight. >> tonight an abc news expensive. an interview with a worker who was there to witness the mass shooting and the aftermath. we're learning much more about what may have led to the mass shooting and how the gunman chose his target. >> he's worked there for 12 years, there this morning in the office next to the break room where workers gathered for a shift change when the gunfire erupted. >> there was just several bursts. it was a series of shots and then a series of gunman

leave the scomblg head for the control center. he rushed to provide first aid. >> i saw a couple people as i walked in. then i just saw a mass of bodies. and i went to check to see if anybody was alive. if i could do anything for anybody. and watched people take their last breath. >> reporter: it surprised him that the gunman was 57-year-old samuel cassidy, a maintainer who ensured flow to the light rail system. >> i was shocked to find out who it was myself. i had a good relationship with him. i've always been cordial. >> reporter: cassidy did not fire indiscriminately. >> i do know that he had a specific agenda and was targeting certain people. he walked by other people. he let other people live. he gunned down other people. >> reporter: he says this should

not be a story about gun control but about how bpa treats its employees and how they treat each other. >> sometimes they're brutal to one another. and i know certain shops have a certain culture about them. and it's a union trade deal. that is all part of the core of blue collar workers. and that's how things go. >> reporter: he believes that cassidy snapped because of treatment on the job. he is a veteran of the air force. he tells me this is a gun-free zone. he wishes he was carrying a weapon at the time. the crime scene at the property in san jose is still very much active tonight.

>> reporter: we've been able to move much entrance. the building is not open to the public. an early indication the shooter had employee access to the area. 6:34 am wednesday. shots erupting at the light rail yard. the target an early morning union meeting with 80 people in attendance. this happened during what should have been a routine shift chang employees. the sheriff's office quickly initiated the county's active shooter protocol. we're told deputies arrived while shots were still being fired.

finding multiple people had been hit. the sheriff said the gunman shot and killed eight people before turning the gun on himself. 40 others had been rescued by responding agencies. >> they know that's their job, to put their life on the line to try to save other people. >> reporter: they also had security teams sweeping all of its facilities with bomb-sniffing dogs. the fbi and a, it f responded to help process the scene. on wednesday, governor newsom clearing a scheduled press conference. >> when are we gonna put down our arms literally and figuratively? our politics, stale rhetoric, finger-pointing. all the hand-wringing, consternation that produces nothing except more 4y and frustration.

more scenes like this over and over and over again. i say that not as a governor. i say that as a father of four. as a member of this community. >> reporter: back out at the entrance, we were warned processing the scene is going to take some time. and from where we're standing, we watched sheriff's vehicles enter and leave the property. pretty consistently over the last few hours. a vigil is planned for 6:00 pm, tomorrow, thursday, at city hall. members of san jose's religious community gathered today to hold a vigil fo victims. >> my heart mourns for those who were lost today. innocent men and women. families without mothers and father fathers.

younger avenue. laura anthony has been at that home all day long. are investigators still on the scene? >> reporter: the scene has changed dramatically. in just the past hour or so, the road here is now open to through traffic. and the police presence here, the investigative presence has been reduced significantly. just one lone san jose police car blocking this court where sam cassidy lived. this is all quite a contrast to the scene that unfolded here early today. loading up his truck to head off to work. shortly after, surveillance cameras captured these images, the house burst

into flames. heavy smoke billowed from the windows. >> i was gonna play golf this morning. i look outside, it start smoking from outside. my wife told me look at outside >>orter: t fme were so intense, firefighters could not go inside. >> when our unit arrived on-scene, they encountered very heavy fire conditions. we chose to fight the fire defensively from outside the house because of conditions. >> reporter: the mass shooting just 11 miles away. the bomb squad followed by thea, tf and fbi. it soon became clear that this house would become a major crime scene. >> i had no idea those two were correlated. it's really had no idea that type of stuff happened right across the street from my house.

>> reporter: images of bomb technicians showing what appear to be sandbags, perhaps to buffer detonation. law enforcement confirmed ammunition and fuel tanks were among the contents of the house. for neighbors, their seemingly reclusive neighbor. >> what happened when you were trying to back your car out? >> oh, he yelled at me, do not come into my driveway. you have to get out. so i took off. >> reporter: it's all quiet here tonight compared to the scene that unfolded through the most of the day. most of the investigators are gone for the night. at least this is no doubt a complex investigation inside of sam cassidy's home. you have to remember that the scene inside is mostly gutted by fire. so whatever evidence they're looking for in there, they're going to have to literally sift

a different perspective tonight on shooting suspect, dan cassidy, from a san jose man who worked with him in the past. >> i knew the shooter quite well. >> reporter: an electrical subcontractor, he says cassidy worked in the substation from 2013 to 2014. >> i had a nice experience with him. he was great. he helped us out. he helped with a couple of other guys, and he did a great job. i was stunned. >> reporter: he had another job a mile from the light rail yard when he heard of the shooting. >> then i saw the fire at the same time. >> reporter: the fire was reportedly set by cassidy at his own home before he went to the

yard and opened fire. eventually turning the gun on himself. he says cassidy worked directly with many of the shooting victims who fifer also knew. >> i was shocked. i have no idea why this would happen. i want to put my heart out to the families and my prayers. >> reporter: longtime next door neighbor, jenny wu, could not believe cassidy was involved. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: wu says cassidy used to work on their car. she never withined anything of concern. >> we just say hi, how are you. >> reporter: the community trying once again to understand how and why a crime so senseless could happen.

president biden ordered the white house flag to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims. he released a statement saying in part "there are at least eight families who will never be whole again. there are union brothers and sisters, good, hundred, hardworking people who are mourning their own" he then urged congress to quote help end this pandemic of gun violence in america." vice president compares also addressed the shooting mentioning that it is personal to her as a bay area native. >> it is absolutely tragic. i have family that live in san jose. i've worked for many, many years with the mayor of san jose and that police department. and my prayers and my thoughts are with all of those families.

a breaking news update on the shooting. a ninth person who
