overnight police identifying all nine of the victims including a father of two, a grandfather and a longtime friend of a city council member. >> we heard that he choose the people to shot, but i don't know why he choose him. he has nothing to do with him, and we heard even, you know, a couple of people he was on the gunpoint and he said, no, no, you go. you go. some people he choose to kill or something. >> reporter: officials revealing the suspected shooter, samuel cassidy, was a longtime employee for the transportation facility where he opened fire. >> the victims and all the colleagues there knew the shooter well. >> reporter: cassidy even seen in this security video leaving his home shortly before the shooting wearing what appears to be his uniform. police now scouring that house considering it a third crime scene. officials saying cassidy set the home on fire before leaving. investigators reportedly finding an arsenal of ammunition inside. meanwhile, the main crime scene spanning two massive buildings. >> we have three code 3 ambulances.

this is an active shooter. >> reporter: just minutes after the first shots were fired, cteams raced in reach the victim explosive teams cleared the facility inch by inch. in the end, ten people were killed including the shooter who took his own life. but officials say it could have been much worse. and now we're learning more about the suspect. >> he called me names, give me the finger, yelling, screaming, insulting me. he did a lot of it, yeah, i got hurt a lot. >> reporter: cassidy's former girlfriend, who did not want to be identified, speaking out about the abuse she suffered during their six-month relationship. meanwhile, cassidy's ex-wife revealing he had violent tendencies and claims he had talked about killing co-workers in the past. she said she didn't take the threat seriously. >> i never thought he would do >> reporter: this shooting in the grief and fears growing

frustration. uned stateofmerica and when are we going to come to grips with this? when are we going to put down our arms literaltively and figuratively? >> investigators have not said what type of firearm the alleged gunman used. statistics on mass shootings are grim. so far this year we've already had 232 mass shootings and yet he number of americans t stricter gun laws has declined since september of 2019. that's according to a recent study by pew research center. abc's rachel scott has been checking with lawmakers on whether they plan to take action. >> reporter: it is just a stalemate on capitol hill. president joe biden said enough is enough. he says that it's time for congress to pass meaningful gun reform. the house has already passed several bills including two just this past year on background checks, but it has stalled in the senate. this is an issue that has been stalled in congress for decades now, and this is where you see some of the challenges for president joe biden. he signs some of these executive

orders on gun reform, but it really just shows how limited he is from the oval office. >> rachel tells us that there are some bipartisan negotiations on various gun control measures taking place behind the scenes but nothing concrete yet. now to our other breaking story overnight. damaging weather from the plains to the northeast. the powerful storms delivering hail and 35-mile-an-hour winds across western virginia. a woman capturing a wind gust and heavy rain outside of her bedroom window on video, and this was a twister moving across hays, kansas. one of more than a dozen tornadoes reported yesterday. there's the threat of severe weather. that remains today. we'll have a closer look at your forecast in just a couple of minutes. now to the origins of covid-19. president biden wants the intelligence community to find out where the coronavirus came from including the possibility that it escaped from china's lab in wuhan. abc's elizabeth schulze joins us from washington. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mona. well, president biden wants a definitive answer to the question, where did the coronavirus come from?

now it's become an intelligence operation. this morning president biden is asking new questions about the origins of covid-19. he's now directing the u.s. intelligence community to redouble their efforts to investigate the virus and report back within 90 days. there are two main theories about its origin. either the virus was transmitted through contact with an infected animal, or it escaped from a lab in wuhan, china. "the wall street journal" recently reported three workers at the lab became sick and were hospitalized with flu-like symptoms in november 2019, one month before china reported its first infection. yesterday facebook announced it's no longer removing videos that say the virus was man-made as lawmakers pressed dr. anthony fauci on where he thinks the virus originated. >> so have we found any animals that carry covid-19 that could have been the source of the transmission to humans thus far? >> thus far, not

as i said, i still believe that the most likely scenario is that this was a natural occurrence, but no one knows that 100% for sure. >> reporter: this morning a spokesperson for the chinese embassy in washington calls the president's investigating a smear campaign. meanwhile, encouraging news about immunity and the virus. a new study suggests people who have recovered from covid could have immunity for years. >> there is the potential theoretically for them to make antibodies for years according to the "nature" magazine authors for the rest of their lives and this is because they found te presence of special antibodies in the bone marrow that kind of just hang out and wait for the virus to show up again so they can strikes obouns ctributes to herdty because yoo many outhe with more incentives to get the vaccine. today minnesota's governor will announce the possibility of winning free state park passes,

back now with a tennessee woman held on bond after police say she drove her suv through a covid vaccine event. deputies saying she did it as a protest. the woman allegedly screaming, no vaccine, as she sped through the scene monday. luckily no one was hurt. a suspect is being held on $750,000 bail in a string of bb gun attacks in los angeles. police believe the man has been firing pellets at cars on an l.a. freeway. at least three were hit this week. more than 100 incidents reported in the past month in and around los angeles. no one has been seriously injured. now to a surprise development in the case surrounding the murder of an iowa college student. the man accused of killing mollie tibbetts now says he was abducted the night tibbetts was murdered. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: this morning, a courtroom bombshell in the murder trial of mollie tibbetts. the man accused of killing the

t 2 h ity of iowa college do it. instead, cristhian bahena rivera claims he was kidnapped and forced to drive two masked men and one of them killed tibbetts whose body was found in a cornfield. on day six of the trial, the 26-year-old mexican national took the stand in his own defense recounting this never before heard theory. >> did you tell law enforcement the truth that night? >> translator: not all. >> reporter: he testified that on the day the 20-year-old was killed, he got out of the shower to find two strangers in his living room. bahena rivera, who speaks little english, says the men wanted him to drive them in his car, one man armed with a gun, the other with a knife. >> translator: that i shouldn't do anything stupid and everything was going to be okay. >> reporter: as they drove, bahena rivera says they passed tibbetts running three to four times. he claims the men then asked

him to turn the car around and one got out heading towards tibbetts disappearing for about 12 minutes. bahena rivera testified something was later put inside the trunk of the car. he says he then drove the men to a house next to a cornfield and was told that if he called police, his ex-girlfriend and daughter would be hurt. >> translator: because i remember that they said that if i would say something, they were going to do something to my family, my ex-girlfriend, my daughter. >> reporter: bahena rivera testified that once the men were gone, he opened the trunk and found tibbetts dead. he says he put her body in the cornfield and decided not to tell police out of fear. bahena rivera's testimony contradicting the prosecution's case that he told police he confronted tibbetts while she was running and blacked out on how she was stabbed and ended up in his trunk. the defense has rested its case. and closing arguments are scheduled to begin this morning. mona, andrew. >> andrea, thank you. amazon is considering launching brick and mortar

back now with the cougar on the loose in washington. that jumped the fence. eventually bursting through a screen door and into a home. nobody hurt. officials hit it with tranquilizer darts. >> the white woman who called police on a blackbird watcher in new york is suing the company that fired her. accusing financial services firm of race and gender discrimination. she claims the company failed to properly investigate the incident. the company calls the lawsuit quote baseless. >> most of us would never consider trying to get past airport security. but chicag o'hare airport a determined woman did that. twice. walking onto planes without a boarding pass. >> this morning newly released video shows a woman evading airport security twice with no boarding pass. the incident happened at chicago o'hare. in november.

she is seen ducking under the ropes when tsa agents are not looking and calmly boards an american airlines flight. minutes later agents pull her off the plane. >> it's disturbing. after billion of dollars spent on the physical security of airports and keeping the public safe, somebody could do something so easy to duck under the rope. >> video shows her returning the next day. again making it to gate. walking around another passenger. to get on another flight. she's pulled off the plane and tries to board three more times before police were finally alerted. authorities say the 23 year-old got screened through security both days but gave no explanation for why agents failed to stop her. >> it was at a low during covid. in terms of number of passengers processed. now we're ramping up back into the summer season. people are traveling again. they have to tighten up. >> american airlines saying in statement we continue to work

this is abc7 news. now at five a growing memorial in san jose after that deadly rampage. we know the shooter killed nine employees. what we are learning about the victims and the vigil planned for tonight. at 6:30 he got a call from his co worker and said there's an active shooter. >> that is a daughter of one survivor of this deadly shooting spree. the investigation still underway this morning at the railyard. security video showing the shooter just minutes before the attack. his home is still an active crime scene. good morning. it's thursday, may 27th. we appreciate you joining us this morning. >> late last night we learned that a 9th victim died in the tragedy. that person died at the hospital. that was a person that was taken to the hospital yesterday. the only person who was shot and survived at first.
