memorial in san jose after that deadly rampage. we know the shooter killed nine employees. what we are learning about the victims and the vigil planned for tonight. at 6:30 he got a call from his co worker and said there's an active shooter. >> that is a daughter of one survivor of this deadly shooting spree. the investigation still underway this morning at the railyard. security video showing the shooter just minutes before the attack. his home is still an active crime scene. good morning. it's thursday, may 27th. we appreciate you joining us this morning. >> late last night we learned that a 9th victim died in the tragedy. that person died at the hospital. that was a person that was taken to the hospital yesterday. the only person who was shot and survived at first.

details about their employees who were killed and also update us on how this will impact light-rail service. a 9th person has died from this massacre here at this vta railyard. a place officials say workers should feel safe. investigators say they were killed yesterday morning by one of their co workers, sam cassidy who then killed himself. police haven't said what his possible motive was. the governor met with the victims families yesterday and then gave a press conference about the need for gun control and praise for the first responders. >> i'm not just going to express my sympathies, but let me thank the heroism of those victims. what a human act. so, i just want to -- we just

morning dressed in a vta uniform, calmly loading up his truck to head off to work. momentsafter the suspect left the house burst into flames. this is cell phone video from a neighbor across the street. you can see that heavy smoke from the windows. the flames were so intense that firefighters couldn't initially go inside. with the mass shooting just 11 miles away then the arrival of the san jose police bomb squad, followed by the atf and then the fbi. it soon became clear that this house had become a major crime scene. >> i had no idea those two were connected. i just got some information that he probably lit up his house and then went over there and went crazy. that's really shocking. i had no idea that type of stuff was happening right across the street. >> law enforcement confirmed both ammunition and fuel tanks were among the contents found inside the house. the suspect's home is still marked off with police tape. late last night most of the

investigators left but there are still some there right now. the street has also reopened. the fbi is now investigating the shooting and it comes as many wonder how this could happen in america yet again. peter thomas is on gma this morning with what he is learns. >> our sources are thankful the shooting wasn't worse given that the killer likely had multiple guns. they are saying the fact that he left his home and burned it down was a sign that he had no intention of surviving the a secret service threat assessment on shootings in public spaces suggested police will look at if there were recent stresses in his life. did he have financial difficulties and did anything happen at work that would set him off >> are we just reporting more on these mass shootings are they on the rise >> mass shootings are ngdistur rate. nearly doubling if you compare 2020 to 2018.

. in just a couple of minutes we expect there will be an update at the scene of the vta shooting yesterday. we understand that's sheriff will be providing us some more information this morning. of course we are also expecting an update later on about the investigation. this is something that we have just found out about. we have a crew there and are getting ready to bring you that as soon as we can. if you are just tuning in and you went to bed earlier last night there has been another victim as a result of the shooting. that means that a total of nine people were killed yesterday at the vta railyard. then of course the shooter also died and that 9th person was someone that went into surgery yesterday. he at first survived his

8:00. obviously it's tragic for everybody who lost their life. this is a person that we had gotten out of the building and gotten to a hospital. even while the scene was still hot. my heart goes out to all the family members. >> any update on the investigation possible motive explosives anything you can tell us >> as far as the motive, that is probably going to take a while to sort out if we can ever determine. one thing we are releasing now is the suspect had on him or -- at the place where he died two semi automatic hand guns. then 11 magazines that were -- had ammunition in them. i know our deputies and officers were heros. they went in and confronted the suspect. this they confronted the

suspect he took his own life. i believe that the officers and deputies saved lives. >> no doubt. wow. anything new on the explosives what were those >> i can only speak to our k9's alerted on explosives in his locker. there were the precursor things to explosive devices but no explosive devices. san jose police is handling the fire and that crime scene and i know they found explosive material there. >> are you still processing here >> yes. yes. it'll be a while because of the large crime scene. we will actually have it scanned in such a way that it looks like you can walk through the building. you have seen the crime scene -- and that takes a while to set up the locations because in one building there were five people who were shot and

killed and in another building there were two that were shot and killed. it's a large crime scene. >> how about the injured how many injured do you have anyone else in the hospital or who was injured >> no. nobody. all fataliti es. >> this seems like it was targeted >> you know we don't have full information on that. that is a possibility. we are not certain. we have talked to all the witnesses who were right there when he was shotting. we don't know why some and why not others. >> did they say if he was saying anything >> not that i have been told. >> and any stories about what the victims did in the moment >> we provide law enforcement services to vta. we -- our team had actually trained all vta employees what to do in an active shooter and had done an exercise specifically in that building with

vta employees. they were told to run, hide or engage the suspect. i don't know what -- i don't know what they did. we may have some heroes also with vta. some of them may have lost their lives. i think that they reacted as they should have and certainly with our entry team and able to get out victims. that kind of protocol that we have in this county i think what we do yesterday saved lives. >> when did you do that training >> with in the last year. >> what irony. >> and an exercise in that building. >> wow. >> yeah. a lot of employers do that now. it's tragic. what is happening in this world i don't know. i don't know if we will ever find a motive for the suspect. >> can you tell us how many people were at the location at that time when the shooting happened >> you know i don't know the

number. i know that we had a number of people in our building that had been witnesses and there were probably about five or ten of those people. i don't know how close they were to the shooter or how many were there. >> there was a [inaudible] meeting >> i have heard that said. i don't know that firsthand. i would be the person who knew. i believe it was at the beginning of the shift. it could have been an informal meeting. it could have been union but that's noting have been told. any speculation on that is purely speculation. >> you were able to identity all the victims. is there a goal for the investigation tonight is there a piece of information you are working to get out next >> no. just still processing the scene to try to figure out. make sure we talk to all of the witnesses and everything else that we can do. there's search warrants being done on social media accounts if any. cell phones, see if we can put

together the investigation. >> how long do you think you will sweep the building there you know probably -- i know you are all very careful in doing that. how long do you think that will be >> probably at least another day after today. just because of the spread out nature. >> i'm not sure if where the shootings happened. if those were the only building that he went to. >> have you found anything at this point its been almost 24 hours. can you tell us on that >> it's not about finding things necessarily. you know we did find the explosives. we know where the victims were. we know where the suspect was. it's -- we are going to do a lot of -- we don't know how many shots were fired at this point but that's something we will determine from the crime scene. looking at the victims and seeing what we can find with that. >> can you tell us more about the guns are they legal guns >> on their face just by

where the investigation stands. hi. we just got briefed by the sheriff here in san jose. we have new information about the gunman's guns and the ammunition that he had. she said they found him with two semi automatic pistols and 11 magazines that all had ammunition in them. she believes he stopped shoots when he heard deputies come into that facility. she believes that her deputies saved lives yesterday morning. here at this vta railyard. a 9th person did die overnight or late last night. here at this massacre the death toll is nine vta thgunm killed himself. he was shooting at his co workers officials say. they accuse sam cassidy of this massacre. he did kill himself. another interesting bit of information the sheriff gave us this morning is that these vta workers had been prepared for this right here at this very

mile from the vta railyard. his neighbors, surveillance system captured him as he left yesterday morning and before the suspect's house burned. the images and what the neighbor is saying about the suspect. >> thank you. the suspect's east bay -- east san jose home became it's own crime scene yesterday. this is a surveillance video coming a neighbor showing samuel cassidy dressed in a vta uniform, his mask on, loading up his truck to head off to work. shortly after this the neighbor's surveillance cameras caught these images and his cell phone video from across the street showing the home going up in flames. prior interactions with cassidy have become haunting memories. >> talk to him and say hi but he never talk to me and say hi. he kind of staring at me all

. we are hearing some of those first calls for help at the vta railyard. we monitored the initial dispatch calls. >> this is an active shooter reportedly eight employees at the light-rail maintenance yard. we have no visual of where the shooter is right now. pd has multiple units code 3 and some on scene investigating. employees are evacuating to the parking lot and it sounds like there may be active shotting shots heard. pd is closing down younger. they are saying the shooter is on the third floor. unknown which building, still another active shot heard. >> they are -- we are hearing a san jose man who worked the shooter in the past. kate larson spoke to him and went to the neighborhood of sam cassidy's

family. >> i knew the shooter quite well. >> he is an electric subcontractor. he got to know sam cassidy while building a vta substation. >> i had a pleasant experience with him. he was great. very nice and supportive and helped us out and would pal around with a couple guys and they did a great job. the vta community is g i was stunned. >> he was on another job site a mile from the san jose vta light-rail yard when he heard the shooting. >> i heard the gun shot and then i didn't know where it was coming and then i saw the fire at the same time. >> the fire was reportedly set by cassidy at his own home. cassidy worked directly with many of the shooting victims who he also knew. >> that's washocked. i have no thiswoul have happened. i want to put my heart out to the families and my prayers. >> santa clara county sheriff
