vta for 20 years. 29-year-old adrian balleza, a maintenance worker and light rail operator. 49-year-old alex ward fritch. 35-year-old jose dejesus hernandez iii. 63-year-old lars kepler lane. 40-year-old i-team. 42-year-old paul delacruz megia and 36-year-old with 49-year-old timothy michael romo. >> nine workers are all the shooting victims. no one else was injured. >> tonight, a vigil will be held at san jose city hall to honor their lives. the shooter also a employee. he took his own life yesterday. investigators revealed new details saying he had several guns and fired several rounds. it is still an active investigation seen. some service has been delayed indefinitely. buses will be available. cornell bernard has been following the latest details. we begin our coverage with

cornell. >> reporter: kristin, the fbi has joined this investigation and said the vta railyard you see behind me. that is where the massacre unfolded. tonight, we are told they will be mapping it out re-create a virtual-reality version of the events and the scene to determine how things unfolded yesterday. meantime, the sheriff revealing new details about the gunman and how much firepower he really had. >> i don't know whether people were targeted were not but he was intent on killing people. >> sheriff lori smith revealing more information about a gunman who took the lives of his coworkers wednesday morning. witness accounts are painting a picture of samuel j. cassidy as an angry loner. >> he has been described to me as being a disgruntled employee. he didn't like anybody and nobody liked him. >> reporter: smith said samuel

j. cassidy fired shots killing nine people before taking his own life. smith said he carried more firepower than investigators first thought. >> there were three handguns located where he killed himself . located in his duffel bag or backpack and in the surrounding areas we found a total of 32 magazines. these were 9 mm. >> reporter: before the shooting, the sheriff said there was a brief exchange with a union representative who came by the railyard for a visit. >> the suspect talked to the union person and said i am not going to shoot you over its to that effect and started shooting other people. >> none of our family members from vta -- on the extended family didn't deserve this punishment. >> reporter: employees pay tribute to their fallen coworkers. >> i was at the family assistance center and i saw the aftermath and i saw the immense pain in the faces of the families and i heard their cries when they got the news. it was utterly heart-wrenching.

>> reporter: we are back live at the scene. it is still very much a crime scene. the fbi has surveillance video of the shooter walking into carry out the shooting. for now, they are not releasing the video. fbi teams from quantico, los angeles, sacramento, san francisco joining this investigation with shares investigators as well. we are live in san jose. >> cornell, before you go, are investigators revealing whether they have an idea on a motive? we have heard he had grievances against vta and passed up some people he could have shot and let them live. why? >> reporter: right. we asked a sheriff that. she said in the wake of nine lives lost, it is really hard to talk about or even

understand the motive but they are looking. so far, no motive yet but they are looking for any possible notes or any possible manifesto this gunman may have left behind. >> cornell, thank you. >> we are learning more about the men killed yesterday. we are hearing from their families and friends in an exclusive interview you will see only on abc7 news. the widow of victim lars kepler lane spoke with us. they couple had been working there for almost 2 decades. they plan to retire next year. >> vicki lane is picking up the pieces alone. her husband and best friend of 22 years, killed. >> he was my soulmate. he was my total soulmate. the love of my life. yeah. he was a wonderful person. i am going to miss him. i miss him now. i miss him so much. this just doesn't seem real. >> vicki has played the last 24

hours back-and-forth. the last time she heard her husband's voice was tuesday night. >> i live in sacramento and when i heard the news wednesday morning i tried calling and it went straight to voicemail. >> vicki raced to the vta railyard hoping >> had a feeling. i always had hope until the last second. >> at 6:oh 5 pm on wednesday she says her world collapsed. lars kepler lane, a lineman for the vta he talked to. >> i had to kill him? i don't know. he knew that man too. he did know that man. he worked with him. he said he was a quiet man. >> on the side of their dining room, a birthday gift. lars was turning 64 saturday. >> that was one of his birthday presents, yes.

delacruz megia died yesterday morning. leon melendez has their story. >> flowers were left outside the home of jose dejesus hernandez iii . he was one the nine men killed yesterday at the vta light railyard. we spoke to his father today had been visiting relatives in mexico. >> i started calling people and calling people. my wife went to the sheriff's department and confirmed that he was gone. yeah. >> ananda started at the vta as a mechanic and later worked as an electrician. it was 35 years old. >> he was a wonderful young man. willing to help anybody and really full of life and enjoying life. >> today, his father spent the day morning his son and planning his funeral arrangements. paul delacruz megia was also remembered by one of his closest friends lorenzo

rodriguez who told us paul delacruz megia left his family and had a passion for the outdoors. >> i just want people to remember him as a good guy, a good man. he had a big heart. >> both met 15 years ago and became good friends. >> defaulting is a nightmare. i was hoping at least he would call me back or text. >> he told us the reality of his friends death is painfully settling in. one of the victims in yesterday's rampages being hailed as a hero. we spoke with family members of 36-year-old john cox , a light rail operator. they were told by another vta employee that his actions saved lives. >> somebody sent me a

>> less than a mile away from the side of the gilroy garlic festival mass shooting, this neighborhood mourns an innocent life lost. 29-year-old adrian balleza, a father, husband, loved one and one of nine lives taken wednesday morning and the vta shooting in san jose. i was in bed. i look up to turn on the tv. assault what happened. the first thing that came to mind was adrian because he is my neighbor. i knew he went to work at 4:00 in the morning. >> his neighbor said she texted him after learning the news with no response. she in the neighborhood were shocked to learn later that they lost their friend. as she looked at adrian balleza's facebook page she recalls how the family is left behind. trotter still remembers the first time she met him. >> he stood at my front door

and we had a conversation. we talked about the lord. i know he was a christian guy. he loved his family. he loved his community. he was a people person. he loved his job. he loved meeting the people on the bus and taking care of his customers. just holding conversations and just providing support. providing mental help support to his writers. >> she says the county needs to do more about the mental health of its employee so and other devastating events like this one will never happen again. in honor of her friend, adrian balleza. >> my heart goes out to his family and all of the victims families. just know god and know that he left this earth and being a good person. 48-year-old i- team was a line worker and also a friend of city councilman role paralysis. >> i unfortunately got to know

we are digging into the suspect the highly disgruntled vta employee and it may have contributed to why he targeted vta employees although, there is no known motive. matt boone is joining us live with the latest developments. >> reporter: a lot going on out here behind me. multiple agencies on the scene. all day they were coming through the burnt wreckage as well as neighboring homes searching for crews -- clues. the 2016 incident is revealing the information. abc news has been informed that

customs officers contacted him when he returned from the philippines. they found books of terrorism and notes on him about how much he hated the vta. sky 7 was this afternoon as a bomb squad officials continue to remove items from the home including more ammo and incendiary devices. be fire along with the news has disturbed many neighbors including malika young whose husband worked at the vta for 35 years and knew cassidy and passing. she says it is a close-knit group of people and it has shattered her sense of security. >> it makes you scared to go anywhere and i just to work but to the mall, to the store. you think about it. anytime you are in a group of people, it is an opportunity for that type of person. didn't want to hurt one person. they want to hurt a lot of

the view from our rooftop camera shows just how breezy it is around the embarcadero. we'll see increasing clouds and low cloud and hack tomorrow and saturday we will have some high clouds passing through. temperatures will soar on sunday and monday making the second two-thirds of the memorial day weekend quite warm. here is the overnight computer animation showing high clouds pushing through and low cloud increasing and little spots of coastal drizzle may occur before the morning commute gets underway. it will not be any widespread areas. we will have the white clouds with us. skies will be bright. overnight low temperatures will be in the 50s. a relatively mild range of temperatures. tomorrow's range will be 57 at

romo. >> to a story of survival , one of the pta workers who escaped the shooting spoke with "good morning america". she learned this makes you describe the moment she learned her daughter was still alive. >> this was 6:30 in the morning. we put on the news. we didn't know exactly what was going on or if he was okay. i was just really worried crying watching the news. eventually he was able to text that he was okay. he wasn't able to call us or anything so it wasn't until i saw him walking on the news that i knew he was okay. >> it was good but i wasn't assured. i didn't know if he was okay

showed up early. hid behind a train car. segment processing grief and loved ones gated trauma. david louis had four experts walk through what they and their friends need to do and whether any progress is being made to allow intervention before a mass casualty event occurs. >> counseling has been offered to families of victims and survivors. while some may decline, psychologists encourage it over a period of time. >> the grieving process can take years, unfortunately. symptoms of ptsd can also take time before they start to settle as well. this is going to be something that is going to be needed and ongoing. >> hurdle could be the stigma

of seeking mental health services. loved ones should be on the lookout for symptoms of depression, insomnia, anxiety, feelings of survivor's guilt and flashbacks. >> if you notice something with your loved one you bring it to their attention that we tried to demystify and destigmatize going to get mental health treatment. >> friends also need to reach out to offer support and a very targeted way. >> offer what you can provide. what instead of asking what a grieving person needs from you, ask the friend and say i can bring meals to your house wednesday and friday. is that okay? we will victim families will never see closure since the alleged shooter is dead. it will be analyzed to see if warning signs went undetected. >> when you look at these mass shooters, there is no risk profile.

house speaker nancy pelosi is back in her home district addressing the spike in violence against asian americans in the bay area and around the country. pelosi met with leaders of the aapi community to address the still rising threat of violence as well as the bipartisan covid- 19 hate crimes act signed into law by pres. biden. there have been more than 6600 reported incidents in the past year. >> it strengthens our ability to prevent, report and combat hate crimes and will help protect not only aapi families but all americans . >> while enacting the legislation is a positive step it is important all americans address the issue of hate going forward.

now to our special series. a look at the issues threatening the california dream as well as the people working to keep the dream alive. asian americans and pacific islanders are the fastest growing immigrant group in the u.s. with nearly 1/3 of those living in california in the midst of a surge of hate crimes against the aapi community. we are highlighting the many contributions they have made to the golden state. we contribute to the richness of the stead. you look at religious institutions it is really incredible to see the diversity. >> california has the largest population of asian americans and pacific islanders in the united states today. >> in california, gratian from asia has risen sharply. in 1950 california's aapi community accounted for less than 2%.

today it is up to 15%. that means one in every six californians is asian-american or pacific islander. >> to see the contribution throughout the state in the bay area traditionally you have the historical communities in the city of san francisco. down and silicon valley ways you cannot talk about the success without talking about the contributions of asian americans there. so many of the entrepreneurs and so much of the venture capital is because of the asian- american population. >> chinese americans make up the largest aapi community. the biggest population living in the bay area. central california is him to the largest -- community. 21% is indian. in southern california, 26% of the aapi community as chinese followed by 20% filipino and 14% the enemies.
