>> we're live wrufr happen to stream. one of those killed yesterday was lars lane. his widow spoke to abc 7 news in an expensive interview. the two were married for over two decades and had plans to retire next year. >> reporter: if life is like a puzzle, she's now picking up the pieces alone. her husband and best friend of 22 years killed. >> he was my soul mate. the love of my life. a wonderful person. and i miss him. and i miss him now. it just doesn't seem real. >> reporter: she has played the last 24 hours back and forth. the last time she heard her husband's voice was tuesday night. >> we said goodnight to each other because i was in sacramento. and then when i heard the news wednesday morning, i tried calling.

and it went straight to voicemail. >> reporter: she raced to the vta rail yard hoping lars survived. >> i always had hope till the last second. >> reporter: at 4:00 pm wednesday her world collapsed. lars was killed by a coworker. someone he talked to. >> why he had to shoot him, i don't know. he knew that man too. he did know that man. he worked with him. he said that he was a quiet man. >> reporter: on the side of their dining room, a birthday gift. lars was turning 64. >> he had already opened another one earlier. >> reporter: she wants lars to be remembered by his great sense of humor, his love for his family and friends. he was ready to retire next year from the v, it a. he leaves behind four children and their dog.

morgue about the gunman. he had a lot more firepower than previously thought. cornell bernard is live in san jose with new details tonight. >> reporter: the fbi now joining this investigation. they are working five sep crime scenes. inside the vta rail yard. where this massacre happened. tonight we are told they will be mapping it out to digitally recreate a virtual reality version of the scene to determine how events unfolded. the sheriff revealing new details about the gunman. >> i don't know whether people were targeted or not. but he was intent on killing people. >> reporter: more information about a gunman who took the lives of his coworkers wednesday morning. witness accounts are painting a picture of samuel cassidy as an angry loner. >> he's being described as a disgruntled employee. he didn't like anybody and nobody liked him. >> reporter: he fired 13 shots inside the rail yard wednesday,

killing nine people before taking his own life. he carried more firepower than investigators first thought. >> there were three guns located where he killed him, located in his duffle bag or backpack and in the surrounding areas we found a total of 32 magazines. these were nine millimeters. >> reporter: before the shooting, the sheriff said there was a brief exchange with a union representative who came by the rail yard for a visit. >> the suspect talked to the union person said i'm not gonna shoot you or words to that effect and then started shooting other people. >> none of our family members from vta or extended family deserve this punishment. >> reporter: an emotional news conference at vta headquarters as employees pay tribute to the fallen coworkers. >> i was at the family center and i saw that aftermath. and i saw the immense pain in the faces of the family. and i heard their cries when they got the

news. and it was utterly heart-wrenching. >> reporter: back live at the vta rail yard, the fbi says surveil video of the shooter walking in, carrying out the shooting. they are not releasing the video. the sheriff's department says for now, a motedive remains unknown. >> and >> and we are learning more about how some of the other men were killed yesterday, who they were. 35-year-old josc herncndez, and paul de la cruz pedilla.

>> reporter: josc was in mexico visiting relatives when he found out that his son had been killed during a mass shooting at the vta yard. he started at the vta as a mechanic and later worked as an electrician. he was 35 years old. >> he was a wonderful young man. willing to help everybody. and really full of life. and enjoying life. >> reporter: today his father spent the day mourning his son and planning his fu arrangements. >> it's just so hard to understand. and we probably will never understand it. the only thing you can accept it, how do you understand, how do you explain that? >> reporter: paul was remembered today by one of his closest friends, lorenzo rodriguez, who told us that he loved his family and had a passion for the outdoors. >> i want people to remember him as a very good guy, good man.

innocent life lost to gun violence. adrian beas a, husband, father, friend, and one of nine lives taken wednesday morning. >> i was in bed, i woke up, turned on the tv. i saw what had happened. and the first thing that came to mind was adrian. because he's my neighbor. and i knew that he went to work at 4:00 in the morning. >> reporter: his neighbor beatrice texted him after learning the news with no response. she and the neighborhood were shocked to learn later that they lost their friend. she remembers how her friend leaves behind a young son and wife. trotter still remembers the first time she met him. >> he stood at my friend door and we had a conversation. and we talked about the lord. and i know that he was a christian guy. he loved his family. he loved his community. he was a people person. he loved his job. meeting the people on the bus

and taking care of his customers. >> reporter: trotter, a former employee herself, says the county needs to do more about the mental health of its employees so that another devastating event like this one will never happen again. >> my heart goes out to his family and all the victims' families. but just know god and know that he left this earth being a good person.

>> reporter: jay martin says he and romo would chat about their shared interest in motor homes. the 49-year-old had recently become a grandparent and was looking forward to spending time with his family. >> we'd talk about places we've been and that we want to go and see around here. just always very outgoing. >> reporter: another neighbor remembers the little chance encounters and ritual supplies on their cul-de-sac in tracy. >> we always exchanged waves and smiles. hey, it's our weekend, blah, blah. >> reporter: they say romo's cheerful voice carried across the cul-de-sac. a neighborhood that's now a little quieter as friends mourn the loss. >> those little exchanges. just ahead, digging into the shooter's past. why would he

breaking news in daley city. police are investigating a shooting and a car crash on mission street at templeton avenue near the city's northern boarder with san francisco. police say two people were found shot inside a car, one died. the srth hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries. police closed off the street and asked people to avoid that area. they are still looking for the shooter or shooters. an accident on the bay bridge may be connected. the chp briefly closed three eastbound lanes. the lanes have since reopened. we are digging into the suspect who officials today called a highly disgruntled vta employee for many years, which may have contributed to why he targeted vta employees. although

there is still no known motive. matt boone spent the day looking into cassidy's past and joins us live in san jose with the latest developments. >> reporter: there's still a lot going on behind me outside of this home just down this court right now. be you can see the investigators still on the scene. multiple agencies have been combing through the property and neighboring houses all day searching for clues and bringing out things inside the home. we're also learning more about his past. sources have confirmed to abc news that samuel cassidy was detained by border officials when coming back from the philippines in 2016. they said they found books about terrorism on him as well as a notebook that expressed how much he hated the vta. this was according to a homeland security memo first reported by the wall street journal. now we were out here earlier. sky 7 was overhead. and atf and bomb squad

officials continue to remove items from the home. not knowing what was inside as well as encountering damage to the home's structural integrity made for a challenging investigation. >> i'm hearing that there are incendiary devices there. ammunition. i believe part of the house collapsed interior. it's certainly an arson investigate, but if there's any kind of a collapse in there, it's gonna be a pain staking progress. >> reporter: the big question obviously still is motive. the information from that homeland security incident in 2016 further backs the theory that is may have been due to unhappiness with his job. but the sheriff says they have found no manifesto themselves or any materials that describe his intent. though they are planning on searching his digital devices. all the streets in this area are still closed off.

to roughly double in size. not far away in a restaurant about a block away, a large crowd of v, it a workers are gathered tonight getting ready for this moment. they're passin t-shirts. all of the names on the back, some of the names on the front. what we see here is just a feeling that is growing in san jose tonight. a lot of people are very upset. >> reporter: when touched by a tragedy we cannot control, the instinct to act anyway and own them becomes compelling. outside city hall it manifested in the form of flowers and flags and names and hearts. and people who came by because what else could they do? >> nobody expects it to happen to them. >> reporter: a slow but constant

parade. turns out one of the victims is from the same village where he grew up. >> we don't know why we lose them. i don't know what's going of >> reporter: a loss even if we do not know all the victims personally. and a profound loss if we do. this woman preferred to not speak with us. her grief stronger than any words. credit angelina lopez, a stranger, who joined her. >> if it was one of my family member, i would want somebody to do the same for me. >> reporter: we're getting a bit of an itinerary for it. at 6:00 pm mayor lokeerd will be there along with two members of congress. the president of the board of the vta. there will be a moment of silence and a lighting of nine candles in honor of the victims. >> we too will be bringing that

a husband and father of two hailed as a hero for his actions during yesterday's tragedy. >> today loved ones, friends and coworkers could not hide their grief, just devastated as they gathered at the family home in union city. the younger brother describes the 36-year-old as the family favorite and hissizol. he says he wasn't surprised that his brother took action to save others. including placing a call to a fellow employee two minutes after the shooting began to tell them to stay away. >> at the same time it's very comforting to know he went out the way he lived his life. and i think he probably intend today to be remembered as a hero person who died trying to save others. he was my idol. in one way or another, i hated him for be so long strict with times. sometimes he would
