tonight, new video shows the vta shooter walking to the facility after open firing. a clearer picture of the chaos is unfolding as we learn more about the victims including a hero. >> his first reaction was to tell other people run to safety. >> reporter: thousands gathered tonight in san jose for a vigil honoring the nine victims. >> these are people we know and we love. >> very emotional tonight. thank you for joining us. >> the vta released these images of all nine victims today.

workers but also husbands, sons, grandfathers and friends. many of their loved ones shared their memories at the vigil tonight. jr stone was there. >> reporter: this is 35-year-old josc one of nine victims killed in the v, it a shooting on wednesday. >> he was a really hard worker. the sad thing is he actually got a flat tire on the way to work. >> reporter: tragically hours later he was killed. josc sister tanya was one of dozen was family members who met outside san jose city hall thursday night. they were joined by honest of people who were there to support and remember those like paul mejc >> yesterday was the saddest moment of my life.

ground. >> and there was this scene at the vigil. four san jose firefighters standing on their engines to pay respects to the fallen workers. the widow of victim lars lane spoke to abc news. the couple had been married for two decades and had plans to retire next year. >> reporter: picking up the pieces. her husband and best friend of 22 years killed. >> he was my soul mate. the love of my life. it doesn't seem real. >> reporter: she has played the last 24 hours back and forth. last time she heard her husband's voice was tuesday night. >> we said goodnight to each

other. i was in sacramento. when i heard the news wednesday morning, i tried calling. and it went straight to voicemail. she raced to the rail yard hoping lars survived. >> i had a feeling, i always had hope until the last second. >> reporter: at 6:05 pm on wednesday, her world collapsed. lars was killed by a coworker. someone he talked to. >> why he had to shoot him i don't know. and he knew that man too. he worked with him. he said that he was a quiet man. >> reporter: on the side of the dining room, a birthday gift. lars was turning 64 on saturday. >> that was one of his birthday presents. he had already opened another one earlier. >> reporter: vicki wants lars to be rmed by his sense of humor, love for family and friends. he leaves behind four children and

a dog. there are three other victims, each one beloved. their family, colleagues and friends are all dealing with unimaginable loss. >> reporter: 29-year-old adrian bc friend. >> he loves his family, he loved his commune. he was a people person. he loved his job. he loved meeting the people on the bus. >> reporter: with the valley transportation authority for 20 years. his son says he worked through the entire pandemic. he was a tinkerer and could fis anything. alex fritz was an avid motorcyclist who built a tiki bar in his backyard for cocktail parties. he died in the hospital surrounded by family.

more coworkers. >> any active shooter investigation, they're all unique in many ways. there were no surprises here. >> reporter: the sheer size of the crime scene is challenging. five sites total. the fbi is assisting specifically with evidence recovery and victim services. >> it also includes three dimensional mapping of the entire crime scene. >> reporter: methodical work to better understand what happened wednesday morning. sheriff lori smith describes the first onsite interaction. >> the suspect talked to the union person. said i'm not gonna shoot you or words to that effect and then started shooting other people. >> reporter: she says he had three semiautomatic handguns, 32 high-capacity magazines and that he fired 39 rounds inside. still no motive identified.

sources confirm cassidy was detained by border officials in 2016 while returning from the philippines. this was uncovered in a homeland security memo, first reported by the wall street journal in. it they described finding book about transcribism on cassidy and a personal notebook that expressed how much he hated the v, it a. >> any active shooter investigation that is one of the first things that we're trying to determine. what is the motive, was there any ideology behind it. we do not have a motive for this. >> reporter: the special agent says there are about 50 federal agents assisting with this investigation. these are teams coming from quantico, l.a., sacramento and san francisco. he says evidence collection will continue the next several days. >> amanda, thank you. san francisco's mayor says she's been in close contact with san jose's mayor. the tragedy brought up haunting memories of
