the widow of victim lars lane spoke to abc news. the couple had been married for two decades and had plans to retire next year. >> reporter: picking up the pieces. her husband and best friend of 22 years killed. >> he was my soul mate. the love of my life. it doesn't seem real. >> reporter: she has played the last 24 hours back and forth. last time she heard her husband's voice was tuesday night. >> we said goodnight to each other. i was in sacramento. when i heard the news wednesday morning, i tried calling. and it went straight to voicemail. she raced to the rail yard hoping lars survived.

>> i had a feeling, i always had hope until the last second. >> reporter: at 6:05 pm on wednesday, her world collapsed. lars was killed by a coworker. someone he talked to. >> why he had to shoot him i don't know. and he knew that man too. he worked with him. he said that he was a quiet man. >> reporter: on the side of the dining room, a birthday gift. lars was turning 64 on saturday. >> that was one of his birthday presents. he had already opened another one earlier. >> reporter: vicki wants lars to be rmed by his sense of humor, love for family and friends. he leaves behind four children and a dog. there are three other victims, each one beloved. their
