people are expected to travel this weekend, the largest number in more than a year. >> it seems like it's back to normal. >> reporter: while mother nature may try to dampen the day in some areas, officials across the country are working tirelessly to make sure the pandemic can't stop the party. >> go, get vaccinated. hit the beach. >> reporter: mobile vaccine sites are setting up camp at some of the country's most popular beaches. >> we got an opportunity to get vaccinated and we came down. >> reporter: while travelers passing through airports are being offered the single-dose johnson & johnson vaccine before they fly. >> super easy. super fast. super convenient. >> reporter: this year strikingly different than what memorial day brought in 2020. scenes like this of maskless pool parties at lake of the ozarks sparking panic last year, but with more than half of all adults in the u.s. vaccinated, there is little fear of a repeat surge. >> if you've been fully vaccinated you can and should feel safer about gathering this holiday weekend. >> reporter: for those who haven't had their shots states are rolling out increasingly extravagant incentives.

gained control of a destructive wildfire overnight. around 25 structures including some homes were destroyed in the mining town of baghdad. the entire town was forced to evacuate. an initial investigation shows it may have been started by a road construction crew. breaking overnight police in southern california have released a photo of a vehicle they believe was involved in a road rage shooting of a 6-year-old boy. they describe the vehicle as a white volkswagen gulf sport. nontinted windows. they say a female driver or her male passenger pulled the trig their killed aiden leos last friday. the reward to capture and convict the shooter has grown to more than $300,000. new surveillance video shows the gunman in a mass shooting that killed nine of his co-workers, the man seen walking across the rail yard in san jose just after his first round of shooting on his way to kill more victims. overnight the community gathered to remember those victims. abc's elizabeth schulze joins us with the latest. elizabeth, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning, andrew. well, a vigil was held overnight in san jose to honor and mourn the nine victims in this shooting as authorities continue to search for a motive. this morning, as the investigation continues into the san jose mass shooting, a community is grieving the loss of nine innocent lives. >> we get up every morning safe in the belief that when we go to work, that we would come home to our family and our loved ones. that did not happen. >> reporter: vicki lane's husband lars was among those killed. >> hold him, just holding him. >> reporter: overnight the santa clara sheriff's department releasing new surveillance video of the gunman. 57-year-old samuel cassidy walking across the rail yard moments after his first round of shooting on his way to another building to kill more victims. officials say cassidy fired 39

shots armed with three semiautomatic handguns and 32 magazines of ammunition, and now investigators are characterizing cassidy as a highly disgruntled transportation authority employee who may have been targeting his victims. >> there was a person there that was a non-vta employee, and the gunman said, i'm not going to shoot you and then began shooting other people. >> reporter: sources also confirm u.s. customs officers detained cassidy in 2016 after a trip to the philippines saying he possessed books about terrorism, fear and manifestos as well as a black memo book filled with lots of notes about how he hates the vta where he worked. co-worker jose hernandez was an electrician at the vta killed in the attack. >> a wonderful young man, really willing to help everybody. >> now, here in washington, the house has passed two gun control bills this year but they remain stalled in the senate. the white house says president

biden is looking into additional executive actions on guns and background checks. andrew. >> elizabeth, thank you. the push to create a special commission to look into the january 6th attack on the capitol appears to be doomed in the senate. senator lisa murkowski is among a handful supporting the investigation. overnight she blasted members of her party accusing them of allowing politics to dictate their decision. despite an all night session a vote on the commission may not take place until later this morning. three police officers in tacoma, washington, have been charged with killing a black man whose dying words were, i can't breathe. witnesses say it was an unprovoked attack taking place in march of last year, two months before george floyd was murdered. abc's andrea fujii has more. >> reporter: this morning, pleas for change from the family of a black man killed at the hands of tacoma, washington, police officers. >> the criminal system needs to

be made over from the head just take it all off. >> reporter: 33-year-old manny ellis was beaten and tased while his hands and feet were shackled. his death ruled a homicide with an enlarged heart and meth intoxication as contributing factors. cell phone video shows officers restraining him and he can be heard saying he can't breathe. >> i can't breathe, sir. i can't breathe. >> reporter: the officer's body cameras were not rolling at the time but witnesses say ellis did not fight back. according to authorities police jumped out of their vehicle and attacked ellis after a brief conversation with him. it's not clear what led to the confrontation. ellis had just left a convenience store and was walking to a friend's house after playing drums at his church. officers claimed ellis was trying to open car doors, but his family says that's not true. >> there was raspberry

filled doughnuts and a water bottle on the scene. that's what my brother got killed more. so the fight is far from over. >> reporter: the three officers now charged with his death, two facing second degree murder and the third charged with manslaughter. tacoma's mayor vowing to move forward with change. >> these charges are not an ending. they are part of the beginning we embark upon to make tacoma a better place for everyone who chooses to call our city home. >> reporter: the three officers are now in custody. their arraignment set for this morning. meanwhile, the tacoma police union saying this all appears to be a politically motivated witch-hunt. andrew, reena. >> andrea, thank you. time now for a look at your friday morning weather. there's plenty of rain across the country today after a dry morning. states will see strong storms and heavy rain. strong storms in western texas as well and rain across the

two hero police officers risked their lives to save a man trapped in that burning truck. they dragged him to safety just before the vehicle exploded and was engulfed in flames. the officers say they were just doing their jobs. a new video is out showing a passenger lobbing several punches to a southwest flight attendant's face until another passenger stepped in. the flight attendant lost two teeth in that assault. southwest says the passenger was refusing to comply with landing instructions. she was arrested and the airline now says she is banned from future flights. next, the summer products in short supply. businesses say there is already a shortage of essentials like air conditioners, and experts are blaming the pandemic. >> reporter: this morning, consumers bracing for summer product shortages and price hikes. as temperatures rise and vacation hot spots fill up, many say air conditioners are at the top of the list for surviving the summer months. but now there is an increase in demand for ac units that goes

beyond seasonal spike, and experts say it's causing a shortage. >> there is the fear that this could be like toilet paper and paper towels last spring. >> reporter: many hvac manufacturers join the shortage on covid-related production slowdowns and a worldwide shortage of semiconductors. >> we're seeing a lot of raw material shortages and price increases. so copper, aluminum, steel, all of those go into air conditioners, and the price is going up on all that stuff. >> reporter: and if you can find one, prices have increased too. ac units are up to 9% more expensive right now. also in short supply, bicycles. one shop owner says basic bikes are on a 30 to 45-day back order with higher-end models taking as much as six months to arrive. and there may be fewer fireworks in the sky this summer. distributors say shipping issues from china are likely to cause a fireworks shortage in the weeks to come.

one civilian. witnesses say the fire truck swerved to avoid hitting a speeding car, bounced off a median and careened into the building. two of the injured firefighters had to be pulled from the wedged in truck. okay next tiger woods breaking his silence about his recovery from a car accident. woods says the rehab to fix his leg is like nothing he's ever done before. three months after the crash that nearly took his life, golf legend tiger woods speaking out about his recovery telling "golf digest," quote, my physical therapy has been keeping me busy. i do my routines every day and i'm focused on my number one goal, walking on my own. taishging it one step at a time. woods' rehabilitation has been focused on strengthening his right leg which suffered severe injuries and required emergency surgery after he lost control of his vehicle while speeding in los angeles and crashed into a tree at over 70 miles per hour. woods was found not to have been impaired and no charges were brought against him. woods has rarely been seen in public as he recovers. last month he posted this

picture on instagram showing the five-time green jacket winner on crutches, a boot covering most of his right leg. woods is no stranger to rehab having had a combined ten surgeries on his back and left knee over the course of his career but the hall of famer saying, quote, this has been an entirely different animal. i understand more of the rehab processes because of my past injuries but this was more painful than anything i've experienceed. when asked about his hopes to play golf again in the future the 15-time major winner had no comment. and it's still unclear whether additional procedures will be necessary or if woods can expect to regain full strength. there's fallout from several incidents involving fans at nba playoff games. the philadelphia 76ers fan who dumped popcorn on russell westbrook has been banned and had his season tickets revoked. and the knicks fan who spit on atlanta's trae young has been banned along with three fans in utah because of a verbal altercation. the nba placers association
