it gets kicked off today. >> definitely kick your friday into gear. this memorial day weekend is the unofficial start to summer, expected to be the busiest travel weekend since the pandemic began with millions already hitting the road this morning. you're taking a live look. this is atlanta. it is moving along right now but it'll be much different later on today. >> it certainly will and airports are also bracing for a huge number of travelers. take a look right there. that is the austin international airport. another live look today expected to be the busiest day of the weekend to fly with long lines at tsa checkpoints, the secretary of homeland security alejandro mayorkas is joining us live in just a moment. but first to our transportation correspondent gio benitez who is live at newark airport with what travelers can expect this weekend. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, cecilia, good morning to you. already on wednesday, tsa screened more than 1.6 million people. that's up from just 260,000 last year and that's why some are saying this is just the beginning of the summer of travel.

this morning, the busiest holiday travel period since the pandemic began is officially under way. as americans take to the roads and skies, we're expecting to see more travelers this holiday weekend than we've seen in over a year. and for many people, it's a welcome return to the skies. >> this is our first time traveling since last year, february. we're going to new york for a wedding and are really excited about it. >> reporter: more than 37 million expected to take a trip. that's 60% more than last year, when 23 million traveled. united's ceo scott kirby telling us bookings are piling up. >> so we're expecting 1.3 million people. it will be by far the biggest travel weekend that we've had so far this year. >> yeah, you're seeing different trends you typically don't see every other year. domestically, what are you seeing. >> huge demand for beaches, but we've alsoee-- we' had200%, i to places like jackson hole or sun valley or vail, places out

in the mountains where people can go and so that really has continued to build. >> reporter: domestic leisure travel returning far faster than most experts predicted. united and delta already seeing pre-pandemic numbers for june. and you can pretty much bet that planes will be packed. in fact, delta's ceo saying that he expects their planes to be about 80% to 90% full this weekend and i'm holding this because you've got to remember that in airports and on planes you've got to wear that mask. it is federal law, michael. >> that is a great message there, gio. thank you so much. as everyone hits the road this weekend gas prices are seeing a huge spike. elwyn lopez joins us from atlanta. good morning, elwyn. >> reporter: michael, good morning. more than 34 million people are expected to hit the roads this weekend. that is more than double than this time last year and they are already heading out this morning.keat wav l like froe.

here in atlanta and los angeles. experts say you can expect travel to take at least 20% longer than normal, that is according to a company that tracks mobility and analytics, addi adding that and today the longest delays are expected between 2:00 and 6:30 p.m., michael. >> elwyn, all is happening as americans are seeing the highest gas prices in seven years. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. the national average is $3.04 a gallon compared to $1.96 a year ago and here in atlanta, it is $2.97. that is nearly 30 cents more than this time last month and $1.26 more per gallon than this time last year. now, experts say that is in part because oil production is not back to pre-pandemic levels in the same way that traffic is and, of course, the pipeline shutdown and subsequent runs on gas stations didn't help much either, michael. >> thank you so much. joining us with more on the surge in travel is the secretary of homeland security, alejandro mayorkas, who also oversees the

tsa. thank you for joining us this morning. and mr. mayorkas, with more than 2.5 million americans expected to fly this holiday weekend is the tsa ready or should travelers expect long lines and longer delays? >> good morning, michael. we're very excited about the re-emergence of travel, the chance for americans to reunite with family and friends whom they haven't seen for some time. oh, tsa is ready. we have really focused on a hiring surge so ready for the re-emergence of travel, summer travel and, of course, the memorial day travel. people will see lines because, you know, there's going to be a tremendous amount of people traveling this weekend, but patience is required. this is a partnership between tsa and the people we serve. >> a lot of patience required for sure. we saw in our piece that masks are still required in airports and also on airplanes.

the cdc relaxed their mandates. several states or many states have also relaxed theirs as well. do you expect to see the same for public transportation soon? >> michael, the mask mandate is a federal mandate in airports and on airplanes and that's going to hold true probably until mid-september, and it's a very important mandate. we are getting out of the covid-19 pandemic because of a concerted federal effort and we need to stay strong and really put this behind us. >> and we've seen a dramatic spike in violence on planes with 2,500 cases of allegedly unruly passengers so far this year. many of these passengers, it comes from refusing to wear their masks. the flight attendants union complained about the uptick in violence against their members. when you say you won't tolerru specificalstop >> michaelvien against ena flight is

a federal offense and those cases are going to be prosecuted. we will not tolerate that. we're going to stand behind the flight attendants who are there to serve the american public. important.ir safety is very - looking ahead to summer, europe, other countries, they're going to open up. could we see vaccine passports to travel internationally either into or out of the u.s.? >> we're taking a very close look at that. you know, one of our principles that has guided us throughout the pandemic is the value of diversity, equity and inclusion and making sure that any passport that we provide for vaccinations is accessible to all and that no one is disenfranchised and so we're taking a very close look at that. there is an underlying point here, of course, which is everyone should get vaccinated. we've got vaccination centers everywhere, no more than a few miles from everyone's home and

vaccine, make one safe and one's loved ones around them safe. >> i love your message about having patience on this busy weekend, thank you. >> thank you. >> whit. we turn to the latest on that deadly rampage in san jose. the shooter killing nine people before turning the gun on himself. this morning we're learning more about the victims. kaylee hartung is with us again from san jose. kaylee, good morning to you. >> reporter: whit, this investigation continues and this community is in mourning. nine men showing up to work here two days ago and never returning home. overnight loved ones gathering to honor the nine victims who lost their lives in the tragic shooting at a light rail facility in san jose, california. >> these aren't names to us. these are people that we know and love and seen every single day of our working

our souls. >> reporter: this as authorities release new surveillance video of the shooter during the rampage. that's him calmly walking across the rail yard after already opening fire in one building and moving on to the next. and now troubling new details about his past. according to a department of homeland security memo, samuel cassidy was detained in 2016 by border officials after a trip to the philippines. he was carrying books about terrorism and fear and manifestos as well as a black memo book filled with lots of notes about how he hates the vta, that's the valley transportation authority where he worked. the victims all employees there now identified. abdi alaghmandan, adrian balleza, alex fritch, jose hernandez, lars lane, paul megia, taptejdeep singh, timothy romo, michael rudometkin remembered by their colleagues and friends.

>> we get up every morning safe in the belief when we go to work that we would come home to our family and our loved ones. that did not happen. >> reporter: many of the victims were longtime employees. 20 and 30-year veterans becoming family and heroes. like 42-year-old paul megia who worked as an assistant superintendent. his close friend of 15 years devastated. >> it's a nightmare. >> reporter: 36-year-old light rail operator, taptejdeep singh was killed trying to alert co-workers about the shooter. he leaves behind a wife and two young children. his family in anguish as i spoke to his brother. >> his instinct was to help others and that's what he did and i'm just glad, you know, other people were saved because of it. >> reporter: and alex fritch, a substation maintainer was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. he later died holding the hand of his wife of 20 years. terra. >> alex was really fighting hard. he didn't want to go anywhere and i didn't want him to go.

>> reporter: it's so hard to imagine. another indication this tragedy could have been even worse, authorities have recovered more guns and ammunition at the shooter's home as well as molotov cocktails. cecilia. >> truly tragic, okay, kaylee, thank you so much. we turn to washington where the battle over creating that commission to investigate the january 6th insurrection stretched late into the night. top republicans like mitch mcconnell are pushing members to vote against this commission. our congressional correspondent rachel scott has the very latest. rachel, good morning. >> reporter: cecilia, good morning. as you said it was a late night here in the senate, the vote on that commission was pushed back as lawmakers battled over another piece of legislation, democrats do not appear to have the votes to get this passed. we are told senate minority leader mitch mcconnell is personally worki t urge his members to vote against it. some republicans have told me they fear that democrats will drag this out. that any findings would hang over them ahead of a critical midterm election year when they're trying to win back the

house and the senate so in the final hours ahead of the vote you had the mother of fallen officer brian sicknick who died after the capitol insurrection. she was up here on capitol hill going door to door to more than a dozen republican lawmakers' offices begging them to vote for this commission. she told me their opposition is a slap in the face to the officers who defended the capitol that day. lisa murkowski saying it made her heart sick the mother of a fallen officer had to come to the hill and beg for votes. michael. >> thank you so much. now to those three washington state police officers facing criminal charges in the death of manuel ellis. an unarmed black man who died last year after being restrained. in the video you can hear him say, i can't breathe. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has more. >> i can't breathe, sir. i can't breathe. >> reporter: manuel ellis, another black man saying those haunting words during a violent encounter with three tacoma police officers now accused of killing him.

ellis was beaten and tased while his hands and feet were shackled. an autopsy revealing he died from a lack of oxygen due to physical restraint. >> i want it stopped. and i will never ever give up ever. >> reporter: there were no police body cameras and it's unclear why the officers got into the confrontation with ellis who was walking to a friend's home after a night of playing the drums at his local church. they initially claim he was trying to open car doors, but his family attorney says there's no proof that that happened and video recorded from witnesses' smartphones and a doorbell camera raise questions about why police used so much force. >> oh, my god. stop hitting him. just arrest him. >> reporter: prosecutors say they identified witnesses who claim ellis was not fighting back and that they never saw ellis strike at the officers. overnight tacoma police announcing they have launched an internal investigation into the

>> we'll talk about that. right now we turn to tiger woods. we are hearing from the golf legend for the first time since that crash opening up about his painful rehab, and the big question. whether he will ever play again. t.j. holmes has the story. >> this guy seems to rehab for a living, right? for the past several years of his career, look, during his career he's had fractures in his tibia, ruptured an acl, five knee surgery, five back surgery, so after the car accident, a lot are asking of course, he will make a comeback. tiger's goal is not that lofty, it is simply to walk. tiger woods is opening up about his recovery from that devastating car crash. telling "golf digest" it was more painful than anything i ever experienced compared to his past injuries calling the rehab process an entirely different animal. >> person is trapped. >> reporter: it was just over three months ago when woods survived that rollover accident while driving in los angeles.

woods suffered lacerations and bruising on his head, nose and chin and an open fracture to his right leg leading to emergency surgery to insert screw, pins and a metal rod in his shin. >> it's very fortunate that mr. woods was able to come out of this alive. >> reporter: earlier this month woods shared a photo of himself using crutches to stand on a golf course but now he's not saying whether he thinks he'll be able to play again, instead he has a different goal in mind, telling "golf digest" my physical therapy has been keeping me busy, i do my routines every day and focused on my number one goal, walking on my own, taking it one step at a time. >> i think he's trying to keep his own expectations in check, but just knowing him and his competitive spirit you have to think if there is a chance he would have a really, really hard time not at least trying seeing if it's possible. >> the recovery is focused on that leg. it's too much to probably describe here while you're eating breakfast what happened but in medical terms it was nasty what happened to that

right leg. don't know if he'll get full mobility back but that is where he's focused. if he comes back again, nobody would be surprised. >> i don't think anybody would. now to the latest on the so-called doomsday couple and what a judge decided about lori vallow. the mother who's been charged with killing her two children, marcus moore joins us with more this morning. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: michael, good morning. j.j. and tylee were missing for months before authorities found their bodies in a shallow grave in idaho and this morning, the legal team representing their mother lori vallow is raising concerns about her mental competency to stand trial. >> miss daybell is present here. >> reporter: we saw lori vallow this week for the first time in months appearing before a judge via zoom on first degree murder charges in the deaths of her two kids, j.j. and tylee and this morning her attorney arguing the woman seen in that feed is unfit to stand trial. the documents filed by her

attorney stating, quote, the completed assessment determined e the defendant is not competent to proceed and recommends restorative treatmnt. prosecutors objecting to that evaluation. the judge halting proceedings for now but has yet to make a final determination on whether proceedings will continue. so the agony persists for j.j. and tylee's grandparents who have been desperate for answers since reporting them missing two years ago telling east idaho news how they felt. >> it's like the world just stopped. >> yeah. >> oh. >> it was a hard day for us. very hard day. >> reporter: now new leads -- for value low.ble may be brewin- prosecutors in maricopa county, arizona now deciding whether lori should face first degree murder charges related to the death of her former husband charles vallow before her children were reported missing. he was killed by lori's now deceased brother alex cox in

what was originally ruled self-defense and in a separate case, prosecutors have since named alex cox a co-conspirator in the death of tammy daybell, the former wife of chad who died a few months after charles vallow. in the indictment authorities accuse the couple of justifying the alleged murders because of their spiritual beliefs. >> ever since she's been involved in this doomsday cult, that is not the same lori that we knew for 13 years. >> reporter: no date or time has been set for that hearing to discuss whether vallow will face -- will stand trial and, whit, this is a case that has so many twists and turns and a family's wait for answers clearly is not over. >> truly a disturbing case, marcus, thank you so much. we turn to the blockbuster comeback for the movies. huge titles like "cruella" and "a quiet place: part 2." set to hit theaters this memorial day weekend, but

under way. as americans take to the roads and skies, we're expecting to see more travelers this holiday weekend than we've seen in over a year. and for many people, it's a welcome return to the sky. >> this is our first time traveling since february of last year going to fork for a wedding and excited about it. >> reporter: more than 37 million people expected to take a trip, that's 60% more than last year when 23 million traveled. michael spoke to secretary of homeland security alejandro mayorkas earlier this morning about those rising cases of in-flight aggression. >> we've seen a dramatic spike of violence on planes with 2500 cases of allegedly unruly passengers so far this year. many of these passengers, it comes from refusing to wear their masks, the flight attendants union has complained about it. when you say you won't tolerate unruly behavior what will you do to stop it. >> violence against a flight attendant on a flight is a federal offense and those cases are going to be prosecuted.

we will not tolerate that. we're going to stand behind the flight attendants who are there to serve the american public. >> reporter: and the flight attendants union hope they are banned for life at least from those airline, cecilia. >> thank you so much. we turn to the latest on that deadly mass shooting in san jose, california. we are learning more about the . kaylee hartung is back with more on this story. good morning again, kaylee. >> reporter: many of the victims were longtime employees of the transportation authority, talking 20, even 30-year veterans who became family and heroes. now this community is trying to support each other as they begin this process of healing. overnight loved ones gathering to honor the nine victims who lost their lives in the tragic shooting. >> these aren't just names to us, these are people we know and love. >> reporter: this as authorities

release new surveillance video released of the shooter during the rampage. that's him calmly walking across the rail yard after already opening fire in one building and moving on to the next. according to a department of homeland security memo he was detained by border officials after a trip to the philippines carrying books about terrorism and fear and manifestos and a black memo book about how he hates the wta. the victims, abdi alaghmandan, adrian balleza, alex fritch, jose hernandez, lars lane, paul megia, taptejdeep singh, timothy romo, michael rudometkin, remembered by their colleagues and friends. >> his instinct was to help others and that's what he did and i'm just glad, you know, other people were saved because of it. >> reporter: that was taptejdeep singh's brother who learned he died a hero. in his final moments the light rail operator was calling co-workers who he knew were

>> reporter: khloe kardashian is hyping a subscription makeup box from a company called ipsy. >> i got my boxycharm of the month. >> reporter: kylie jenner is doing ads for boxy charm. subscriptions for major makeup boxes rising over the last year. >> the makeup subscription business has been steadily growing as if becomes more crowded, certainly media influencers are helpful in bringing more visibility to different makeup brands. >> reporter: "gma" trying out four brands, ipsy, boxy charm, fab, fit, fun and walmart. more personalization. this is interesting. my colleagues ordering boxes from each company. look look's april fry franzino using the manufacture's suggested retail price. when the boxes arrived i felt like someone sent me a present. >> you don't know what's inside a lot of times so that's fun getting to explore and test out new things.

>> reporter: we look at boxy charm, $25 a month. how did the items we received compare to what they promised from a value proposition? >> boxy charm was a great value for the price you pay. >> reporter: fab, fit, fun is a seasonal box, one every three months and has a mix of beauty and wellness products. >> you receive products up to more than $300 in total value. i even was shocked when i opened the box and was like, wow, i can't believe you get this for $50. >> what was the biggest gem that you found? >> there was a face cream that had a value of almost $100. >> walmart also has a seasonal box. the big surprise for me was that walmart has one of these subscription boxes. >> the one caveat is that most of the products are sample size. that being said the value was $20 so you're getting twice as much than you're paying more. >> reporter: "gma" ordering ipsy's glam bag plus. >> each of those boxes came with
