lisa thank you. as we mentioned we are getting our first look at the proposed california workplace safety rules that could be put in place for protecting employees from covid at work but that's not all. the federal government just announced that employers can require covid vaccines. abc7 news reporter and vaccine reporter -- has a look at possible changes. >> reporter: -- giving us more insight as to what the future workplace could look like. >> there seems to be a significant overreach at times. >> reporter: under these proposed guidelines employees who are fully vaccinated would need to wear a face mask in a room where everyone else is also vaccinated, employers will need to provide facemasks for employees who are not fully vaccinated. he's flora, assembly member and vice chair of the states committee on labor unemployment disagrees with the second aspect of that proposal. >> if the state is going to mandate these type of regulations like the masks then there needs to be some sort of funding to that.

>> reporter: are you concerned that these guidelines are going to push some businesses out of california? >> 100%. some of them will move out. >> reporter: under the proposal social distancing continues unless employees are fully vaccinated or getting tested for the virus at least once a week. companies would need to pay for that testing. now santa clara county is getting ahead of the state and giving employees after june 1 to document vaccination since status of employees before they go back to the office. >> i think there's a good amount of concern about whether or not to figure out what was just issued in a way that they can be compliant. >> reporter: with over 40% of california fully vaccinated and 18 days for reopening the economy will the state follow santa clara's example and also require for employers to keep track of vaccination records? >> i don't think we will do that, no. >> reporter: they are said to

vote and the workplace safety proposal on thursday. abc7 news. new guidance for businesses, the federal equal opportunity employment commission is saying employers can require employees to get covid vaccines and even provide incentives for that but businesses must keep the vaccination status private and there are medical and religious exemptions. bay area health officials are weighing in on whether schools should reopen full-time in the fall, when school resumes in the fall bay area health officials say it should be for in person learning five days a week. health officers from the nine counties along with the city of berkeley which has its own health department released a letter yesterday supporting reopening of schools. the letter says the lack of classroom time has thrown a wrench in the classroom process and affected mental health. happening today san francisco's department of

public health is holding some vaccination clinics focused on famies they wilfeature free , rtent and raffprizes to encourage people to get the shot. the clinic at 50 broad street will be open from 9 am to 2 pm. the clinic at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital runs from 9 am to 4 pm. both locations are open to anyone 12 and older, the information on your screen, you do not need an appointment. in the east bay kaiser permanente is hosting a health festival at lake merritt today that will feature a covid-19 vaccine clinic along with preventative health screenings and health information booths. the vaccination station will be set up at east shore park between grant and lakeshore on the east side of lake merritt. anyone 12 and older is eligible and you do not need an appointment. the festival runs from noon to 4 pm this afternoon. moving on now, developing news on the deadly mass shooting in san jose. we are learning about a chilling discovery, and extensive arsenal at the home of the man who shot and killed the nine vta coworkers.

abc7 news reporter studio lear weapons were 25,000 rounds of amni. >> reporter: a small expulsion signaled the safe detonation of what was initially thought to be a suspicious device found at samuel cassidy's home friday. investigators revealed the vta gunman had an arsenal of weapons. it's evidence that remained even after the mass shooter simultaneously set his home on fire. while he shot and killed nine of his coworkers at this vta railyard wednesday morning. >> there was a pot on the stove at the residence and the stove was likely turned on. inside the pot they located ammunition. around the pot there was excel in its. >> reporter: neighbors were surprised to hear what was hiding next door. >> i didn't expect him, i thought he was a normal person. i just found out and was scared. now i'm safe. >> reporter: according to the v rounds of ammunition, a dozen

guns and 17 molotov cocktails. they say cassidy's guns were not locked away rather stashed near different doorways and various parts of his homes ready to use. >> if he was to be contacted by someone else or law enforcement he would have access to those weapons at various areas of the house. >> reporter: but how does one person amass such an arsenal without raising flags? taking into account the three semi automatic weapons and 32 magazines full of ammo cassidy had when he opened fire on his coworkers. >> the weapons he purchased legally we have a record of but magazines you can purchase without management >> reporter: at the railyard cassidy first killed several coworkers in one building and was seen calmly walking over to a second building where he murdered several more. the fbi who was also assisting in this investigation says evidence collection teams are still hard at work at the railyard crime scene and will remain here in the days to come. in san jose i'm amanda delco stilley oh, abc7 news.

already 4 million will be hitting the road and that includes about 4.5 million californians. and the tsa expects to screen 6 million passengers through tomorrow. an unpleasant surprise, with the millions of americans hitting the road we are seeing the highest gas prices in seven years. not surprisingly california leads the nation in the bay area is no exception. according to aaa on average a gallon of gas is going for $4.33 in san francisco. drivers in oakland and san jose are seeing $4.25. many people are taking a big step this weekend and traveling for the first time since the pandemic began but is it safe to stay in a hotel for example? abc7 news reporter cornell bernard spoke with health experts to find out. >> i'm smiling under my mask. >> reporter: eric and sally mcgill from sacramento are spending memorial day weekend in san francisco, their first getaway in more than a year.

convenience of home delivery. san francisco's popular ferry building farmers market is starting a new way for food lovers to get fruit and vegetables that will help rowers across the region. abc7 news reporter david louis takes us to a farm in watsonville. >> reporter: lonely mountain farm in watsonville is a family farm in production year-round, the baker farm has cultivated this 12 acres for 11 years. twice a week they sell their harvest at the ferry building farmers market. >> we all know farming is not an easy job but that's the hardest part is when you've got the food and you put in all this labor and then you can't find a place to make some return on. >> reporter: over the past year foot traffic at the popular market was impacted by the time -- pandemic. as restaurants close that source their supplies here, the nonprofit group that operates the market developed market boxes for curbside pickup to help farmers and now comes a new strategy. next week ferry building farmers market delivered

in the south bay 36 new police officers have been sworn in to the san jose police to permit yesterday, this after officers rushed to the scene of the deadly vta shooting on wednesday. the mayor says officers have never played a more important role. >> you all picked one heckuva time to become police officers. as you would venture into a more violent world you are tasked with the duty to protect and serve. with scrutiny as police officers have never experienced before. >> over the last seven months they have been trained in driving, arrest control, and they will now go into the field training program for the next four months. in the east bay a new class of officers was sworn into the oakland police department. 23 officers took the oath at yesterday's ceremony, the first since the start of the pandemic. over the last year oakland ha

seen adramviolent y apintece ief laent g the first academy w they emphasized de-escalation and is part of the department's shift to community policing. education is one of the foundations of building a better bay area no matter if it is remote or in person, san francisco unified only recently brought students back to class and now at least one state assembly men says the district should not get $12 million in extra funding which was meant as an incentive to reopen. abc7 news education reporter -- explained. >> reporter: the plan to push school districts to reopen was meant to be simple. have kids in the lower grades back in the classroom and fully reopen one entire middle or high school grade by may 15. assembly bill 86 offered $2 billion as an incentive. except that in the letters the state controller the three lawmakers that signed it argued that san francisco unified itia inthschool offered s the option to come back for only a few days a week.

the school district only reopened eight high schools and waited until the day before the deadline to bring the seniors back. >> like so many other parents there is nothing more important to me than having our kids back in school, especially when san francisco has some of the highest vaccination rates across the entire state and country. and in some of the lowest covid rates in our state. >> reporter: -- says san francisco unified should not be entitled to the 12 million it was supposed to receive. abc7 news has confirmed that the state superintendentof public instruction tony thurmond has asked sf usd to prove that it did in fact comply with ab 86. the district says it's working on it. the superintendent issued a statement saying at each successive stage it was not entirely clear if we had the staffing to get to the next stage. the school board president said denying these funds is an unfortunate misstep by state legislators.

i'm larry beal. let's get over to lisa for a check of the holiday weekend forecast. good morning, we do have fog , it hasn't reached totally to the east bay valleys and temperatures will be a little shy of average in some spots. you heard about our advertised warm-up for the holiday, that comes tomorrow into monday and it's going to last into tuesday, right now you can see the clouds here from san rafael, it is 51 downtown, 53 in oakland, with 50 on the coast and walnut creek, just a few clouds out here, it was a pleasant day yesterday and really may has not been too warm. that's about the change though as we enter into the last day of may. and the second last day of may. 48 in santa rosa, 52 by the delta, 53 in concorde in livermore and finally from the roof camera you can see the clouds out there stacked up so we have fog and drizzle and it will be breezy, sunny topaclou
