>> so we really want to make sure that california remains in business as a business from the state as well as protecting employees that work here. we are getting our first glimpse at safety rules that could be put in place to protect employees from covid. good morning everybody it is saturday, may 29, thank you for joining us i'm liz kreutz on abc7 news at -- we will have more on the proposed workplace safety rules in a moment but first let's get over to lisa arjun for a look at the forecast. good morning lisa. and good morning and happy memorial day weekend everyone, we are starting out with low clouds and fog locally not quite to the inland valleys, there's a few clouds but live doppler seven is picking up on the clouds from marin to san mateo and here in san francisco a bit of a breeze and there is mist and drizzle as well. ewan 54 in san jose but above the

low cloud deck you can see the sunshine and that's what's on the way for marin county and the rest of us, 52 by the delta, 53 in concorde we will have clouds at the coast. so through 9 o'clock we are in the 50s, noontime low 60s around the bay and notice we are in the 70s and maybe a few low 80s inland but it will be a breezy day near average. so enjoy it today, we have our natural air-conditioner tomorrow, a big jump in temperatures and heated visors to talk about. this morning we are getting our firstthe proposed california workplace safety rules that could be put in place to protect employees from covid at work. but that's not all, the federal government announced that employers can require covid vaccines. abc7 news reporter and vaccine team member liz peña has a look at the changes. >> reporter: cal osha standards board released a draft of the workplace rules giving us more insight as to what the future workplace could look like.

>> there seems to be a significant overreach at times. >> reporter: under these proposed guidelines employees who are fully vaccinated would not need to wear a face mask in a room where everyone else is also vaccinated. employers will need to provide facemasks for employees who are not fully vaccinated. heath flora assembly member and vice chair of the states committee on labor unemployment disagrees with the second aspect of that proposal. >> if the state is going to mandate these type of regulations like the n-95 mask and there needs to be some sort of funding to that. >> reporter: are you concerned that these guidelines are going to push some businesses out of california? >> 100%, yes some of them will move out. >> reporter: under the proposal social distancing continues unless employees are fully vaccinated. or getting tested for the virus at least once a week. companies will need to pay for that testing. santa clara county is getting ahead of the state and giving

employees up to june 1 to document vaccination status of all their employeesto the offic >> i think there is a good amount of concern about whether or not tuesday is enough time to really figure out what was just issued in a way that they can be compliant. >> reporter: with over 40% of california fully vaccinated and 18 days from reopening the economy will the state follow santa clara's example and also require for employers to keep track of vaccination records? >> i don't think we will do that. >> reporter: cal osha standards board is set to vote on the proposal on thursday. in san francisco, whose peña, abc7 news. and new guidance for businesses, the federal equal opportunity commission is saying employers can require employers, employees get covid vaccines and even provide incentives but businesses must keep the vaccination status private and there are medical and religious exemptions.

bay area health officials are weighing in on whether schools should reopen full-time in the fall, when school resumes in the fall they area health officials say it should be for in person learning five days a week. health officers from the nine counties along with the city of berkeley which has its own health department released a statement in a letter yesterday supporting the reopening of schools. the letter said the lack of classroom time has not only thrown a wrench into the learning process, it has affected mental health. happening today san francisco's department of public health is hosting two vaccination clinics focused on families. they will feature free snacks, entertainment and raffle prizes to encourage people to get the shot. the clinic at 50 broad street in the lakeview neighborhood will be open from 9 am to 2 pm, the clinic at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital runs from 9 am to 4 pm, both locations noted on the screen here are open to anyone 12 and older and you do not need an appointment.

in the east bay kaiser permanente is hosting a health festival at lake merritt that will feature a covid vaccine clinic along with preventative health screenings and health information booths. n will be set up at east shore park between grant and lecture on the east side of lake merritt. anyone 12 and older is eligible and you do not need an appointment. the festival runs from noon to 4 pm this afternoon. developing news on the deadly mass shooting in san jose, we are learning about a chilling discovery, and extensive arsenal at the home of the man who shot and killed nine vta coworkers. abc7 news reporter amanda dell customer leo learned that among the weapons were 25,000 rounds of ammunition. >> reporter:

a small explosion to signal the safe detonation of what was initially thought to a suspicious device found at samuel cassidy's home friday. investigators revealed the vta gunman had an arsenal of weapons. it is evidence that remained even after the mass shooter simultaneously set his home on fire while he shot and killed nine coworkers at the vta railyard wednesday morning. >> there was a pot on the stove at the residence and the stove was likely turned on, inside the pot they located ammunition, around the pot was accelerants. >> reporter: neighbors were surprised to hear what was hiding next door. >> i didn't expect at all the stuff inside, i thought he was a normal person. i just found out and it was a little scary. now i'm safe. >> reporter: according to the sheriff's office investigators uncovered an estimated 25,000 rounds of ammunition, a dozen guns and 17 molotov cocktails. they say cassidy's guns weren't locked away, rather stashed near different doorways in various parts of his home ready to use. >> if he was to be contacted by someone else or law enforcement he would have access to those weapons at various areas of the house.

>> reporter: but how does one person amass such an arsenal without raising flags? taking into account the three semi automatic weapons and 32 magazines full of ammo cassidy had when he opened fire on his coworkers. >> the weapons he purchased legally we have a record of but magazines you can purchase without registering. >> reporter: cassidy first killed several coworkers and one building then was seen calmly walking over to a second building where he murdered several more. the fbi who was also assisting in this investigation says evidence collection teams are still hard at work at the railyard crime scene and they will remain here in the days to come. in san jose i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. -- >> and a vigil was held last night to honor the life of paul megia one of the nine shooting victims. dozens of people gathered in mountain house near tracy where the family lived, paul megia was married and had three children.

>> reporter: ucsf professor of epidemiology george rutherford gives this morning to the unvaccinated because covid is still out there. >> if you are not vaccinated again you need to be and exercise all sorts of cautions and i would probably be sitting tight if i were unvaccinated. >> reporter: guests at the newly reopened palace hotel can watch this video on what cleaning protocols the hotel is taking keeping everything from fixtures to light switches and even tv remotes sanitized. the city's health department now requires the same steps for every hotel. >> we feel comfortable. >> reporter: that is the first step to getting back out there. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. airports across the bay area are expecting an increase in travel over the holiday weekend as well and you are looking live at san francisco international , it's a little foggy there this morning where officials say as many as 38,000 travelers passed through just yesterday alone. that is still 50% below pre- pandemic numbers but it is on the rise. oakland and -- are also

in san francisco bay in 2003, last year the state supreme court throughout peterson's death penalty sentence and in a court filing yesterday prosecutors said that they will drop the issue after consulting with laci peterson's family. peterson could still get a new trial, a judge is considering the question of juror misconduct. if no new trial is granted peterson will be sentenced to life in prison. happening today a rally is planned in front of san francisco's hall of justice to show solidarity with the asian american community, this comes as abc7 is working to learn whether manslaughter charges may be dropped in that deadly attack against an 84-year-old man in january. -- was targeted during his morning walk in the cities -- neighborhood, his suspected attacker is in custody. today's rally is scheduled to get underway at 9 am. with the spike in violence against asian americans one bay area organization is encouraging victims to speak

out. the southeast asian development center has been a lifeline for so many including -- whose father died in january after being attacked during that morning walk in san francisco. we were just talking about it. organizers stepped in to help with the language barrier. >> when you are dealing with the legal department or the judge and you do not understand the detail it is very frustrating. >> during the pandemic they expanded services getting used technology for distance learning and helping workers access unemployment benefits. now to a group of grannies that are taking their own unique stand against hate, abc7 news anchor dion lynn introduces us to a group of sassy senior performers taking on a new genre to get their message across. >> reporter: act out in rhinestones and backwards caps this is a rehearsal of a different kind for the grand

avenue follies. the troop of energetic 60 to 80- year-olds which started in san francisco's chinatown in the 1950s has evolved over time. their performance here is of their new rap, their way of channeling their anger over attacks on americans, asian americans. -- by the way means hit hit hit. with the help of a poet the song in chinese and english is part -- >> i have the meanest line. >> reporter: with a serious yet lighthearted message. the inspiration behind the song's title which means chicken feather duster is a disciplinary tool from another era. >> it brings back memories of punishment from grandma, at that time we were afraid but now we can laugh about it.

this labor and you can't find a place to make some return. >> reporter: over the past year foot traffic at the popular market was impacted by the pandemic, as remote work emptied nearby offices and restaurants closed that sourced their supplies here, the nonprofit group that operates the market felt market boxes for curbside pickup to help the farmers. now comes a new strategy, next week ferry building farmers market delivered will launch. >> if you cannot come to the farmers market on a particular saturday that's okay, you can still order online from your favorite farmer and have it delivered to your house and then come back to the market the following week or the week after. >> reporter: a dozen growers will participate to start with more added in the months ahead. delivery will be handled by the fruit guys another family run business with service to all nine bay area counties for a $10 delivery fee. there is no minimum order. kenny baker says this will help expand sales but won't replace the education and personal

contact he enjoys with shoppers at the market. >> when we share stories and i tell them what's going on in the farm, it seems really for both of us to be in touch with the city and for them to be in touch with the farm. >> reporter: online orders will be taken monday through thursday night for saturday delivery. in time they plan to expand to 24/7 ordering and more frequent deliveries. david louis, abc7 news. let's get a check of the weather now, lisa waking up this morning it does not look like the holiday weekend we are expecting but that's changing. >> yes and it will be a dramatic change sunday into monday. today is looking a lot like yesterday with a good dose of low clouds and fog, 52b0 by the delta with a southwest wind gusting to 35 miles an hour so that onshore flow with us, that natural air-conditioning for one more day for we look at a big dome of high pressure that is going to encompass the bay area and out toward the

sacramento valley. as we look at live doppler 7 the clouds have moved inland and we are clear in fairfield but there are clouds in concorde, walmart creek they smacked walnut creek -- tuesday looking pretty hot as well but it's all about the gray sky here downtown and even that missed, mist and drizzle, looking at 50 here, 54 san jose and 50 along the coast with reduced visibility and the wind at times up to 30 miles an hour right at the shoreline and those clouds clinging to the coast today. 48 in santa rosa, 50 in -- this is san jose with clouds and today will be comfortable out there for everyone but starting out with the fog, the mist and the drizzle, sunshine to partly cloudy but summerlike heat arrives tomorrow and because it is a quick transition we have

fire concerns, vegetation is as dry as it gets, and we are not going to be talking about offshore wind but a heat advisory from noon time on monday through 9 o'clock. the hills and valleys of the north and east bay will see temperatures well into the 90s, triple digits possible and then you go a little further into fairfield, vacaville and vallejo and we have temperatures in excess of 100b0 so we are really going to be hot and in fact the overnight lows come sunday night making it a little bit uncomfortable out there to sleep. you will need fans to get going and look at the temperatures elsewhere. tomorrow will still be cool at the coast but that he will be making its way toward the west. so while we are looking at mid and upper 70s around the bay we are 20b0 warmer inland and only 60s at the coast. this is the holiday where we are over 100b0 and looking at near 80 along the bay shoreline, mid 80s for redwood city and that's a hot day, but not much seabreeze.

after more than a year after covid closures this holiday weekend will be a test for the movie business to see if americans return to theaters in big numbers. two movies are out this weekend, quiet place to mack and disney's carella. sandy kenyon caught up with the stars of cruella. >> what was your name? >> cruella. >> reporter: emma stone seems like an unlikely choice to play this villain especially for those who recall glenn close as cruella deville. but after seeing the new disney movie it is clear why stone is perfect. >> this cruella takes place in a very different era long before thwe all know and love.

clouds and fog are with us and even the mist and drizzle around the shoreline. 54 in san jose, 50 in the city as well as half moon bay and there's the golden gate bridge with all the clouds, 53 in napa, 48 in santa rosa. so hold onto the clouds through about the 8 o'clock hour and then we begin to see more sunshine in the north bay. it's going to be partly cloudy to mostly cloudy at the coast and temperatures will be seasonal today with some of those oranges coming into play after the noon hour allowing temperatures to reach the low to mid 80s in the warmest locations. but as we get toward the 4 o'clock hour that seabreeze is robust and continues to keep temperatures in check right along the coast but we are looking at a rapid warm up for your sunday, and excessive heat advisory by the delta and we will have it all for you in my next full weather outlook in a few minutes. the memorial day holiday travel rush is officially on, fueled by covid vaccinations

and an improving economy. aaa estimates 37 million people are expected to travel this weekend. as abc's ty hernandez explains that is a 60% increase from last year. >> reporter: it's expected to be one of the busiest travel weekends since the beginning of the pandemic, aaa estimates 37 million people will travel this weekend, 2.5 million travelers expected to take to the air. nearly 6 times more than this time last year. masks still required while in airports and on planes. >> i'm hoping that the airlines are taking the precautions that they say they have so we are actually excited.

now at least one state of family member says the district should not get 12 me and dollars in extra funding which was meant as an incentive to reopen. abc7 news education reporter leanne melendez explains. >> reporter: the plan to push school district to reopen was meant to be simple. have kids in the lower grades back in the classroom and fully reopened one entire middle or high school grade i may 15. assembly bill 86 offered $2 billion as an incentive, except that in a letter to the state controller the three lawmakers that signed it argued that san francisco unified never met that criteria. instead the school district offered graduating seniors the option to come back for only a few days a week. the school district only reopened eight high schools and

waited until the day before the deadline to bring the seniors back. >> like so many of the parents there's nothing more important to me than having our kids back in school especially when san francisco has some of the highest vaccination rates across the entire state and country and some of the lowest covid rates in our state. >> reporter: assemblyman ting says san francisco unified should not be entitled to the 12 million it was supposed to receive. abc7 news has confirmed that the state superintendent of public instruction tony thurmond has asked the district to prove that it did in fact comply with ab 86. the district says it's working on it. the superintendent patient a statement saying that at each successive stage is not entirely clear if we had the staffing to get to the next stage. the school board president says denying these funds is an leinstead e misstep by work a ing plan a sotitoofin pe

welcome back, happening today volunteers will start work on the annual pink triangle installation atop san francisco's twin peaks. this is in preparation for pride month which starts on tuesday. the city's pride parade is canceled for the second year in a row because of covid but the pink triangle will shine as a beacon the entire month of june. the 2700 led nodes will be

turned on at dusk on tuesday and will shine from twin peaks until sunrise on july 1. happening today in the east bay six flags hurricane harbor reopens to the public. the concorde water park opened two passholders last weekend, it had been closed cause of the pandemic since october 2019. the park is keeping reduced attendance with a reservation entry system. masks are required except on water slides, water attractions or in the pools. that looks fun, and it really gets you in the mood for summer. but certainly right now it doesn't look that way. >> we just have to wait a day liz and things are going to change. cloudy outside right now from emeryville, highs here along the bayshore in the 60s again and we will have some sunshine but a dramatic warm up is on the way with heat advisories, an excessive heat warning's, right on through the holiday weekend. but we get mother nature's natural ac today, i'll explain next. >> thank you lisa. also next the giants needed

holiday weekend forecast with lisa. good morning to you, it is starting out gray for most of you even some stick and drizzle along the coast so with a lead -- the marine layer pretty robust to start the weekend but a big dome of high pressure is off the coast and that is going to build in rapidly to bring a dramatic warm up sunday, monday, lasting into tuesday over the east bay hills but look at this. as fo not only is gray but we are looking at some wet pavement out there. 50 downtown as well as half moon bay with 53 in oakland and 51 morgan hill and 54 in mountain view. here is a look where there are cloudy skies in the south bay, today numbers near average in the 70s, 53 in napa, 52 by the delta but that southwest wind is howling out there. we have a lot of heat on with triple digit heat as soon as tomorrow, by the delta, 48 in santa rosa right now, it is 50

down in santa cruz for a high of 70 with mostly cloudy skies so we've got the morning fog, the mist in the drizzle and partly cloudy to mostly sunny today, summerlike heat arrives tomorrow into the holiday on monday and the risk of heat related illnesses is there simply because it's going to be a dramatic increase, it has been pretty cool for may and the fire weather concerns because of this big dome of high pressure with us even though the wind, the offshore wind is not a factor with the system. it's all about a building ridge of high pressure bringing heat from the north bay to the east bay, the valleys, the hills will be even warmer and we will have a very light perhaps offshore flow in the upper elevations but at the surface the heat will not make it to the coast. so that is some odnews may want to figure on heading to the coast tomorrow or monday like everyone but this excessive heat morning takes us into the delta for fairfield, vallejo, rio vista, this is

memorial day noontime into about 8 pm and for the bay area we are looking at that heat spiking as well but here is a look at the south bay. the changes we are expecting today in the 70s, below average , low to mid 80s tomorrow and then we are getting up to near 90 on memorial day and then cooler as we go through the rest of the week. but for the bay area in general today, we are average or a bit below with 50s and 60s around the bay, mid 80s inland and then the warm up comes anywhere from 10 to 15b0 tomorrow and by monday that heat peaks. mid 60s today in oakland and we look for 75 in rafael,we for 80 in with 70 in santa cruz. the accuweather seven-day forecast, temperatures will be near seasonal levels today but a sharp warm-up tomorrow, summerlike heat for the holiday and more heat inland but the heat will moderate on tuesday and much cooler as we head toward the middle to the end of

favorite thing in the world and you're like oh my gosh that's amazing. i went to culinary school right out of high school and then worked in pastry with wedding cakes and did a whole bunch of meticulous work with pastry. it was one of those things where i was looking for creativity and what i did so i went with it. they call me the tornado in the kitchen because i'm running around constantly and i'm moving so fast that i don't know i'm covered in flour, and powdered sugar and the joke turned into dirty girl donuts. my standard for where i wanted everything was so high that it right so real takingthat time a mathe quality is there is really important. if it's not -- i love playing with the stall just so anything that i can ring that feeling back of a my god i've had this before, that's what we do. wait a minute they turned strawberry shortcake into a

donut, how did they do that? oh my gosh this is exactly what i know from my childhood. right now my favorite is the banana cream pie but it's really fun, but next month we will have a totally different menu so my favorite always changes. but also we stick in little weekly menus so like last week we did a carnival menu, july we will do an ice cream truck menu, we will playoff that nostalgia again to where we are able to create like rocket pop donuts or drumstick donuts. i want to do something so different that you want to see every month the different things we are doing. we are lucky enough to have the opportunity to take everything locally sourced and turn it into a product. we base everything off seasonal as well as what we have available. >> as a local farmer i've been able to work with marissa to help incorporate local ingredients into her monthly donut changes and it really adds to the feeling of knowing where your food comes from and really enjoying the real true local list of what we are up to hear. >> when you can imagine what
