good morning. welcome to memorial day weekend. it's crazy. the year has flown by so fast. as you know, it's the unofficial start to summer, and americans are hitting the road by the millions heading out to celebrate. >> however, severe weather is threatening to dampen holiday plans, torrential rain slamming millions of americans from the south to the east coast and a big chill is forcing many to pt. >> and take a look at what happened on chicago's lake shore drive. a tree crashing down right there in front of drivers. some cars hitting the debris, but no one was reported anch, new jeeywith the est on t ather. rning. no hey, good morning, whit. the memorial day weekend, that is for sure. we'll start with the trouble they had in texas. 77-mile-per-hour wind gusts

the wrong turn, we'll be there to do something about it. >> i know we saw a really large crowd for spring break in miami beach. are you worried about the crowd size that you potentially could see this weekend? >> yeah, the crowd size is the biggest challenge in the sense that there's always going to be a number of folks within the crowd that come for reasons we're not happy about, speeding or brawling or worse than that so, you know, the volume has immense and people really want to get out, people want to leave, people want to go do something and our city is such an attractive destination that we offer an outsized chair and that's strange coming from the mayor of a hospitality town to say we're worried about too many people coming here, but it's a real worry. what are some of the plans you have to make that happen? >> we have a air and sea show on our beaches which is really spectacular.

i was with a lot of the generals that brought the military assets down. we're going to swear in i think hundreds of new recruits for each branch of the military and these are beaches, by the way, people don't i think know this that an enormous number of service men in world war ii including my dad, who was a sergeant in the army air corps, trained on our beaches and miami beach, we gave the city over to the military for training. i think we charged them $6 a year from 1942 to 1945, but these same beaches will have loads of military showing what they can do but also celebrating those that have fallen obviously in defense of our values. >> and a reminder of the somberness of this holiday weekend. mayor gelber, thanks so much for being with us this weekend. dan? thank you. >> thanks, eva. let's turn now to the pandemic. the u.s. daily case rate has fallen to its lowest point in nearly a year. 133 million americans are now fully vaccinated, that's 40% of the total population, and now

the cdc has new guidelines for summer camps, and janai is right here covering it all. janai, good morning to you. >> hey, good morning. this holiday weekend marks the first since the pandemic began with a decreased concern for the spread of covid. with more than 50% of adults fully vaccinated and 12 to 15-year-olds eligible, we're getting an idea of what summer camps that were largely canceled last year could look like this year. the cdc has significantly eased its guidelines on wearing masks now saying all campers even unvaccinated kids don't need to be masked when outdoors. this is in line with what the agency has already said, that you can take off your mask outside because of the low risk of spread, exceptions, of course, are crowded settings and activities with close contact. for example, kids breathing heavily crowded together on a soccer field may want to mask up. but if everyone is fully vaccinated, masks and social distancing not required. the cdc still strongly encouraging masks indoors for anyone not fully vaccinated and if you're wondering what your employer can require when it comes to vaccines, the equal opportunity employment

commission also out with new guidance saying employers can require covid vaccines to re-enter a physical workplace as well as offer incentives for vaccinations but must keep medical information and vaccine records confidential, but, of course, per federal law, employees have a right to reasonable accommodations if they can't get the vaccine because of medical concerns or religious objections. that cdc guidance about summer camps are recommendations, but with most of the country lifting restrictions and easing mask mandates, that's good news for kids and summer camps and parents, whit. >> yep, everybody trying to figure out what they can and can't do in this period. janai, thank you. we do turn now to a farm worker just convictedfor the murder of college student mollie tibbetts nearly three years after her body was found in an iowa cornfield. now, a juror is speaking out about the verdict exclusively to "gma." abc's zohreen shah is here with more on that. zohreen, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, whit. this is a case that gripped the nation. it took weeks to find mollie's
