partly cloudy skies noontime, low to upper 60s around the bay and inland. it's a cool gray day at the coast and breezy with mostly sunny skies for most of us late in the day with that temperature spread from the 50s to the near 80s. but we will talk about that heat arriving tomorrow in a few minutes. >> thank you lisa. developing news on the mass shooting in san jose, we are learning about a chilling discovery at the home of a man who shot and killed nine vta coworkers. news of the suspects sought stockpile is drawing interest this morning, abc7 news reporter amanda del castillo learned that among the weapons were 25,000 rounds of ammunition. >> reporter: a small explosion signaled the safe detonation of what was initiallfound nmadanal, evidence that remained even after the mass shooter simultaneously set his home on fire while he shot

and killed nine of his coworkers at this really hard wednesday morning. >> there was a pot on the stove at the residence at it was likely turned on, inside the pot they located ammunition. around the pot there was excel events. >> reporter: neighbors were surprised to hear what was hiding next door. >> i didn't expect all the stuff inside, i thought he was a normal person. i just found out and it was a little scary. now i'm safe. >> reporter: according to the sheriff's office investigators uncovered an estimated 25,000 rounds of ammunition, a dozen guns and 17 molotov cocktails. they say cassidy's guns were not locked away rather stashed near different doorways in various parts of the home ready to use. >> if he was to be contacted by someone else or law enforcement he would have access to those weapons at various areas of the house. >> reporter: but how does one person a mass such an arsenal without raising flags? taking into a count the ammo that he had when he opened fire on his coworkers.

>> the weapons he purchased legally we have a record of but magazines you can purchase without registering. >> reporter: at the railyard 11 miles away cassidy first killed several coworkers in one building then was seen on the surveillance video calm lee walking over to a second building where he murdered several more. >> reporter: the fbi who was assisting in the investigation says evidence collection teams are still hard at work at the railyard crime scene, they will remain here in the days to come. in san jose i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. >> i am left speechless at the unity, and the human kindness i have witnessed the last two days. a vigil was held last night to honor the life of paul megia one of the nine shooting victims, dozens of people gathered in mountain house near tracy where the family lives, paul megia was married and had three children. the family had been planning to visit disney land is weekend. you can support the families of the victims in this tragedy, head to abc7

coite on and employment, disagrees with the second aspect of the proposal. >> if the state is going to mandate these types of regulations like the n-95 mask then there needs to be some sort of funding to that. >> are you concerned these guidelines are going to push some businesses out of california? >> 100%. some of them will move out. >> reporter: under the proposal social distancing continues unless employees are fully vaccinated or getting tested for the virus at least once a week. companies would need to pay for that testing. santa clara county is getting ahead of the state, they are giving employees after june 1 to document vaccination status of all their employees before the go back to the office. >> i think there's a good amount of concern about whether or not tuesday is enough time to really figure out what was just issued in a way that they

can be compliant. >> reporter: with over 40% of california fully vaccinated, will the state follow santa clara's example and also require for employers to keep track of vaccination records? >> i don't think that we will do that. >> reporter: cal osha's luz pena sand standards board is set to vote on the proposal on thursday, in san francisco, abc7 news. area health officials are weighing in on whether schools should reopen full-time in the fall, the city of berkeley which has its own health department released a letter yesterday supporting the reopening of schools for all five weekdays. the weather -- has not only thrown a wrench into the workplace but affected mental health. happening today san francisco's department of public health is hosting to vaccination clinics focused on families, they will feature free snacks, entertainment and raffle prizes to encourage

people to get the shot. the first location is on broad street, in the lakeview neighborhood and that will open from 9 am to 2 pm. the clinic at zuckerberg san francisco general hospital runs from 9 am to 4 pm, both locations are open to anyone 12 and older and you do not need an appointment. in the east bay kaiser is hosting a health festival at lake merritt. there is a covid-19 vaccine clinic, preventative health screenings and health info boots. booths. anyone 12 and older is eligible, you do not need an appointment. the festival goes from noon to 4 pm this afternoon. happening now with more than half of u. s. adults now fully vaccinated millions of americans are on aaa predicts more than 37 million will travel for the memorial day weekend but

is a 60% increase from last year. 34 million will hit the road and that includes about 4.5 million californians. tsa says it is expecting to screen 6 million passengers to the end of tomorrow. an unpleasant surprise awaits the millions of drivers hitting the road, we are seeing the highest gas prices in seven years. not surprisingly california leads the nation and the bay area is really no exception. according to aaa on average a gallon of gas is going for $4.33 in san francisco, drivers in oakland and san jose are seeing $4.25. airports across the bay area are expecting upticks for the holiday weekend as well and you are looking live here at sfo this morning where the airport says nearly 40,000 people passed through yesterday. that is still only half of normal pre-pandemic levels but one thing is clear. more vaccinations mean more people ready to check out for at

told us he would highlight some of the issues they faced in his speech. >> covid, a reckoning with race and police brutality, mass shootings and gun violence, striking for fair wages for teachers. after all the trials and tribulations we've emerged stronger. >> reporter: this small group heard a recorded speech given by mohammed the first african- american male to be named valedictorian at tech. i asked him why it took so long for that acknowledgment. >> i think it comes down to a lack of opportunity that existed for such a long time but i think now we are starting to see that we actually have the power to change it. >> reporter: he's like a role model for most black boys especially at the school because he's the first black boy to receive valedictorian which is really an achievement. >> we are stepping into a real world with different choices and different paths. >> all the potential is within us and it's untapped and immeasurable so if we keep

since the body of iowa college student mollie tibbetts was found in a cornfield and finally some justice for her family. as a farmworker has been convicted of her murder. now a juror is speaking about the verdict exclusively to gma, >> we the jury find the defendant cristhian bahena rivera guilty of the crime of murder in the 1stb0. >> reporter: this morning a ici murder trial of iowa college student mollie tibbetts. jurors finding this man cristhian bahena rivera guilty. rivera seen nodding as the verdict was read, the court concluding that rivera was the man who killed the 20-year-old after she went for a jog in brooklyn iowa three years ago. the jury foreman speaking out. >> my heart was pounding in my chest to be honest with you, it became very real for me because this is it. we went through two weeks of this trial and it came down to this so it was very emotional at that point.

>> reporter: scene at the end all the jurors we able to come up with the same verdict. >> even when we went through deliberation we were all very understanding and willing to listen to each other and make sure that we were all on the same page. >> reporter: weeks after her disappearance her family desperately searched for clues. >> you can't give up hope. i mean i know if it were me that were missing molly would not give up hope. >> reporter: that hope crushed after investigators said rivera , a farmworker and undocumented immigrant, confessed to the murder leading them to her body in a cornfield. overnight family and friends saying they are relieved with the verdict. >> molly will never be forgotten. she is a beautiful soul so seeing these ribbons is a sign of molly, like i said i know she's looking down on everybody. >> reporter: sentencing is under july,

-- life in prison without parole. zohreen shah, abc news los angeles. in the east bay a new class of officers was sworn into the oakland police department, 23 officers took the oath at yesterday's ceremony, the first since the start of the pandemic. over the last year oakland has seen a dramatic rise in violent crimes, newly appointed police chief lauren armstrong says this is the first academy where they emphasized de-escalation. it is part of the department shift to community policing. education is one of the foundations of building a better bay area no matter whether it is remote or in person. the controversy throughout this pandemic seeming to follow sf ust at every turn. san francisco unified only recently brought students back to class and now at least one state assembly member says the district should not get $12 million in extra funding which was meant as an incentive to reopen. abc7 news education reporter leanne melendez explains. the plan to push school districts to reopen was

meant to be simple, have kids in the lower grades back in the classroom and fully reopen one entire middle or high school grade by may 15. assembly bill 86 offered $2 million as an incentive. except that in the letter to the state controller the three lawmakers that signed it argued that san francisco unified never met that criteria. instead the school district offered graduating seniors the option to come back for only a few days a week. the school district only reopened eight high schools and waited until the day before the deadline to bring the seniors back. >> like so many parents there is nothing more important to me than having our kids back in school especially when san francisco has some of the highest vaccination rates across the entire state and country and some of the lowest covid rates in our state. >> reporter: assemblyman king says san francisco unified should not be entitled to the 12 million it was supposed to receive. abc7 news has confirmed that the state superintendent of public instruction tony
