attributes continue to pour in for the nine people who lost their lives in ms shooting in san jose. good evening and thank you for joining us. your are watching abc7 news at 5:00 . law enforcement is expected to give an update on the investigation into the vta railyard shooting. and memorial in downtown san jose continues to grow as the committee grieves. flowers, photos and signs of support are part of the memorial outside city hall. nine vta employees were killed last wednesday when one of their coworkers opened fire at the railyard, before killing himself. people spent this afternoon paying respects to the victims. >> my heart goes out to the entire family, the committee and the dta family. it's very sad. >> investigators have yet to

determine a motive. it will take them several days to collect evidence. happening as we speak, the vta family is receiving support from across the bay area. you are getting a live look at a vigil getting underway in union city's kennedy park. you can see a number of members from the sikh committee gathered. organizers say that community is standing together to pray for the victims and their loved ones. much more on this at 6:00. vta says it's light rail service will remain canceled until further notice but buses will continue to replace the train. passengers are advised to plan for much longer trips than usual. the vta is also asking workers not to come to the guadalupe railyard. you can help support the families of the victims in this tragedy. just go to abc7news.com /take

action. shifting gears now, many of us are taking a big this memorial day weekend and hitting the road and getting away. some cases for the first time since the pandemic began. in the north bay wine country is seeing some of its biggest crowds they've seen in a while, which has been great for small businesses. abc7 reporter cornell bernard joins us live in hillsboro and you can see a lot of folks coming out to enjoy the sun. >> reporter: big time. in fact, many have come here to memorial beach. the parking lot here was closed for most of the day, because it was totally jammed. sonoma county is a hot destination this holiday weekend. as a vaccine rates increase people are coming out and having a good time again. it's a great weekend to make a splash on the russian river. water levels are low, but there

today it wasn't super crowded, but people were taking advantage of the sunshine. you can see folks playing volleyball on the fan. others hitting the surf. they made a family date out of it, indeed. and the beach is a hotspot in santa cruz as well. a lot of people hitting the sand. and the water. keep in mind there are no fire watches or warnings this weekend, but there is a higher risk. the healdsburg fire department performed a controlled burn to help prevent the spread of potential wildfire. firefighters monitor the flames and allowed it to burn up to the backyard of some homes santa rosa's assistant fire marshal says with the warmer weather and people getting outdoors, the danger is already here. stick with knowing there is the potential for incidents this weekend we are, again, asking communities to just be mindful. whether it is adhering to the heat advisory and making sure

gunmen armed with high- powered rifles opened fire into a crowd just outside of miami. two people were killed and at least 20 hurt the attack happened after midnight at a banquet hall that had been rented out for a rap concert. three suspects got out of an suv and started to shoot into the crowd before driving away. the shooting was targeted. and is the second mass shooting in the miami area over the holiday weekend. police are preparing for what could be a violent summer. >> it's very disheartening, but it's a trend you've seen around the country. just yesterday we were talking about expanding a violent summer . >> there is a $100,000 reward for information leading to the killers. the city of san jose is hosting a drop in vaccination event for those 12 and older today. a steady stream of people visited the mayfair community

san francisco's asian- american and pacific islander community is looking ahead with its annual arts festival. this year the event is called foraging futures and featured theater performances, educational workshops and visual art displays. organizers wanted to confront hate against the aapi community and bring healing as well. >> that's one of the reasons we wanted to do this event in chinatown, to shine the light on chinatown. this is a way to bring how the arts bring hope and joy back to san francisco. and it is a coming-out party from the pandemic. >> the festival runs until june 27th. the is and pacific islander cultural center has been showcasing music, dance, film and art from the aapi artists

again. it's light, but makes a huge difference this time of year. tomorrow it's a similar set up check we will keep the coast pretty comfortable, but away from the coast it turns dangerously hot with heat advisories going into effect starting at noon tomorrow. overnight tonight there is no marine layer. we have clear skies from the coast to inland. temperatures settling in the 50s, but warm cities like cloverdale, lakeport and antioch will settle only in the 60s tomorrow morning. that creates a launching pad for a hot day in some cities. tomorrow this is probably going to be one of our top three best beach days of the year. we have nothing but sunshine, comfortable temperatures. it it's not too hot, but it feels nice. 60s to 70s and low 80s. please take note, the ocean water temperature is called, it is 53 degrees. you really never want to travel too deep into the ocean because your body can get hypothermia

finally now, a man who is taking on a big challenge and he may even set a guinness world record doing it. check it out, that is. he must be french. he's in the big white kayak. starting tomorrow he will attempt a solo 2400 mile journey from sausalito to honolulu. today the larkspur man and his supporters paddled out to celebrate. his kayak moves by pedaling, which he plans to do for the next 60 to 70 days. 64 would be the record. the 22 foot kayak has space for sleeping and taking shelter inside. he will have an emergency locator beacon just in case. what a great day to start his journey. hopefully we can keep up with them as he continues along. best of luck to him and his team. that is all the time we have for this edition of abc7 news at 5:00. on behalf of all of us here,
