building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc7 news. taking a live look outside across the bay, it may be a nice evening, but come monday there will be areas just scorching. there was weather for pretty much everyone today, but brentwood and other areas got a preview of what's to come when a heat advisory will go into effect tomorrow. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dion lim. you are watching abc7 news at 11:00 live here on abc7, hulu live and wherever you happen to stream. right away let's get to meteorologist drew tuma with a look at the forecast. going to be a hot one. >> yeah. inland tomorrow we'll find temperatures we haven't seen in about six to seven months is, a heat advisory will begin at noon. today we made it into the 80s and 90s in our hottest spots. tonight we're holding onto a

little bit of that warmth. look inland from clovedale to clearlake to brentwood, we're in the mid-and upper 70s right now. tomorrow morning temperatures in the 60s and 70s and by lunchtime our hottest cities into the mid-90s and we still have several more hours of warming to go. here's your hot holiday. we had the heat advisory and excessive heat warning beginning at noon tomorrow for the north bay and the inland east bay. we'll talk about how hot it gets where you live coming up in the full accuweather forecast in a few minutes. bay area beaches were packed today and expect crowds today as well. this is ocean beach and the beach at santa cruz earlier today, some people relaxing in the sun while others were surfing and playing volleyball. despite the hot weather in the east bay today people were getting outdoors to get

together with friends and family, some of whom they haven't seen for months. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone was in pleasanton and got some advice on how to make the most of the heat. >> if you guys are wearing a jacket, take it off because it is hot. >> reporter: 6-year-old zoe little was braving the elements, the 90-degree weather in pleasanton, when we spoke with her on sunday. >> we were getting ready to go over here. when i got in my seatbelts, all the seatbelts were burning. >> reporter: yes, it was hot, but even a little heat couldn't stop this birthday party from happening at bernal community park, especially seeing that it's expected to get even hotter on memorial day monday with the heat advisory going into effect. >> when we first got here, it was 82 and then it turned up to be 90. so it's burning up here. >> my sister said it was going to be in the 80s today, it was

stone, abc7 news. >> the kids kind of stole the show, didn't they? moving on, there are no fire watches or warnings this weekend, but there is a higher risk. the healdsburg fire department performed a controlled burn to clear dry vegetation. santa rosa's assistant fire marshal says with the warmer weather and people getting outdoors fire danger is already here. >> knowing that there is the potential for incidents this weekend we're again asking our communities to just be mindful whether it's adhering to the heat advisory and making sure you're staying hydrated, but also making sure that you're reducing and/or limiting those activities that could start another wildfire. >> keep in mind gas powered lawnmowers could start a fire. firefighters do suggest moving that work into the morning. and we sent this push alert on our free abc7 news mobile app earlier this evening with a look at the forecast tomorrow. if you want to check out the weather where you live anytime,

that app is free to download. law enforcement is expected to give an update this week on the investigation into the vat railyard shooting. today a memorial in downtown san jose continues to grow. nine vta employees were killed this past wednesday when one of their co-workers opened fire killing himself. tonight a vigil was held in union city. abc7 news reporter luz pena was there and says some victims are now being hailed as heroes. >> reporter: emotionally distraught, taptejdeep singh's father spoke about his son. a loss for the sikh community who gathered to honor the nine victims including the 36-year- old vta operator, his brother coming back home to say good- bye to his best friend. >> to honor my brother in his memory to help out as many people as i can in my life. >> reporter: vta workers

honored their colleagues by telling stories. chris alvarez thanking paul megia for being there one last time. >> you take care of what you need to do. just last week he had brought in muffins that he was so proud that he had baked himself and he was cutting them in half so that he could share them with everybody. >> reporter: several bay area council members and the sikh community calling for an end to gun violence. according to gun violence archives, wednesday's mass shooting was the 18th mass shooting in california this year. >> call our congress people. call them and our senators so that we can make sure that this has got to stop and take action. >> reporter: as they wait for change, what's helping the families heal are these stories of heroism. >> the woman told me that he pushed her in that room and

who allegedly was heard threatening to kill asians. i spoke to one of the witnesses who jumped into action to save that officer. it's an interview you'll see only on abc7. surveillance video shows the terrifying moments friday evening when an asian sfpd officer responds to a call about a man attempting to assault women in chinatown and is assaulted herself. >> he's a big guy. he was not letting go. he had a death grip on her. he was not letting go. >> a witness called 911 the day before saying the man identified by documents i obtained as 33-year-old geraldo contreras, says he specializes in killing asian people. the witness called police once again friday and this is what happens. >> stop right there. >> when the officer wearing a beanbag gun slung across her bag engages -- >> stop. turn around. >> -- asks him to turn around, put his hands on his head and asks if he has a weapon -- >> put your hands on your head.

>> -- contreras turns around and attacks the officer knocking her to the ground. bystanders quickly jump into action. >> get off of her! >> michael waldorf in the printed shirt had just finished eating dinner at a nearby restaurant. >> i felt like it was an emergency. i felt like he could really do damage, that if we don't get him off of her right away, he could really do some damage. >> sfp d-backup quickly arrived on the scene and the man is arrested. according to the documents i obtained, this isn't contreras' first run-in with the law. he's been arrested for assault, elder abuse and for assaulting police officers in other parts of california. it's unclear if he was ever convicted. >> some people are not safe for society. clearly he's not. he should not be let out. >> the responding officer sustained minor injuries and is expected to be okay. >> i'm glad she's okay and i appreciate her service. next on abc7 news a botanical burglary, the break- in this weekend at a uc

the director of the garden says he received a call about a greenhouse that had been broken into between 6:00 last night and 9:00 this morning. when he arrived, the door was smashed, but no plants were stolen. the burglar took electronics from inside offices located on the garden grounds instead. >> it was a greenhouse which had cacti and succulents in it and those are very popular these days. so we were really concerned. it's disheartening, but fortunately the plants were not damaged. none that were taken as far as we can tell and the things that were lost we can replace. >> that is a relief. professor feldman says he is still taking inventory to determine how many items were stolen. he says this is the first time the botanical garden has been broken into. turning now to the coronavirus, sonoma county says more than 70% of its residents 12 and older have received at least one vaccination dose. 59% of those people are fully

vaccinated. a total of over 17.3 million californians are fully vaccinated against covid-19 and another 4.3 million are partially vaccinated. the centers for disease control says about 135 million americans or 41% of the population is fully vaccinated. speaking of the city of san jose hosted a drop-in vaccination event for those 12 and older today. a steady stream of people visited the may fair community center throughout the day. the city of san jose has teamed up with local nonprofits and healthcare providers to deliver vaccines to underserved communities. they say reaching these neighborhoods is key to boosting vaccination numbers. to the north bay where wine country is seeing some of its biggest crowds in a while this memorial day weekend which has been great for small businesses. abc7 news reporter cordell barnard found for many visitors it felt like a big step as we emerge from the pandemic. >> reporter: it's a great

encouraging to mayor evelyn mitchell. >> i was thinking about how many people there are here today than i've seen in many, many, many months and a lot of tourists are here which we're happy to welcome back. >> reporter: after a tough year local businesses love to see customers returning, but many are short staffed. ozzy jimenez needs more help at his ice cream and pie shop, noble folk. >> that's kind of one of the things about the pandemic is that a lot of folks left our community and so, you know, right now many businesses, especially small businesses, are looking to hire. >> reporter: yeah, he says lots of hiring is happening across sonoma county's hospitality industry for anyone looking for work, but this weekend many small businesses just happy to greet visitors back once again. they say it's a step forward out of the pandemic. in healdsburg, cornell barnard, abc7 news. tourism is big business in san francisco and this memorial day weekend it is coming back, but we are not all the way there yet. >> it will be several years before we are fully recovered

picture, sutro tower now showing you the sparkling lights of san francisco. we have no fog. we have high pressure building in. it's nothing but sunshine start to finish tomorrow, but you will notice some haze in our atmosphere. we do have a spare the air day in effect tomorrow. you'll notice moderate to poor air quality across the region. so you will notice that thin layer of haze, especially tomorrow afternoon. right now temperatures around the bay shoreline mainly mid- 50s to low 60s, but away from the coast some of our warmest spots right now are in the mid, if not upper 70s. so we still have some warm temperatures even at this late night hour. overnight tonight clear skies, numbers mostly falling into the 50s. some of our warmer spots well away from the coast will actually hold in the low and mid-60s first thing tomorrow morning. future tracker wind gusts, we will have an onshore breeze tomorrow. it will be breezy along the coast gusting from 16 to 29 miles per hour. that's going have a huge impact on our temperatures. we'll have the wide range of

afternoon highs where the coast is pretty comfortable for this time of year, but inland you have scorching hot temperatures. if you're trying to beat the heat tomorrow and going to the area beaches, tomorrow is a really nice beach day, wall to wall sunshine, 60s and 70s, if not low 80s, 70 at stinson beach, 82 at santa cruz. put on that sunscreen. uv is running very high tomorrow and your ocean temperature is today, 51 degrees. i think few people dare to dip more than their toes in that water tomorrow. starting in the south bay, 90 in san jose, 93 morgan hill, 90 in cupertino, 88 sunnyvale. along the peninsula 88 redwood city, 86 mountain view, 84 san mateo, the coast cool with that onshore breeze mid- to upper 60s. downtown san francisco we'll hit 71 tomorrow with sunshine, but you move about seven miles to the west along the coast it's much cooler, sunset about

abc news reporter elwyn lopez has more. >> reporter: more than 37 million americans are on the move this memorial day weekend by car and by air. >> i remember last year it was like empty and now it's all seats are full. >> reporter: the tsa says it screened 5.4 million travelers from thursday through start, up dramatically from the same weekend last year, but still screenings were down about 24% from 2019. >> we are coming out of one of the biggest shocks, perhaps the biggest shock that the modern american transportation system has ever seen in terms of demand schedules. >> reporter: airlines are gearing up for a busy summer. >> we have almost the same number of daily flights to destination we had two years ago. 2020 obviously became the worst year we've ever had. 2021 is in the middle and we're growing back towards 2019 levels. >> reporter: vaccination rates began to slow in april and may, but recent eligibility of 12 to 15-year-olds has helped drive

up numbers. more than 2.5 million have gotten their first shot accounting for about a quarter of all new vaccinations in the last couple weeks. more than half of all americans have received at least one dose and the daily number of cases of covid-19 in the u.s. has plummeted nearly 70% in the past six weeks. >> the real game changer has been the vaccine. >> reporter: as cases decline, americans seemingly anxious to get back to the things they enjoy. the indianapolis 500 welcoming the largest crowd at a sporting event since the start of the pandemic. >> we're a mile long by a half mile wide. so 135,000 people spread over that space is quite a big distance. >> reporter: there is news out of vietnam where the health ministry announced the detection of a new highly contagious variant. this new variant has not been detected in the u.s. and there is no reason to believe the vaccines won't work against it. elwyn lopez, abc news. developing news now, gunman armed with high powered rifles opened fire into a crowd just

outside of miami. two people were killed and at least 20 were hurt. the attack happened after midnight at a banquet hall that had been rented out for a rap concert. investigators say three suspects got out of an suv and started to shoot into the crowd before driving away. they say the shooting was targeted. this was the second mass shooting in the miami area over the holiday weekend. police are preparing for what could be a violent summer. >> it's very disheartening, but it's a trend that you're seeing around the country. we're expecting a violent summer and unfortunately miami- dade county is not immune to that. >> there is a $100,000 reward for information leading to the killers. hundreds gathered in the streets of tulsa, oklahoma, today marking 100 years after one of the worst acts of racial violence in american history. in 1921 an angry white mob

destroyed the city's prosperous neighborhood known as black wall street. thousands of homes and businesses were burned. people were killed. >> it's a black eye on america and i think that people are having to wake up to it and having to acknowledge it. >> people also gathered at the historic vernon ame church for sunday service. the church was one of many landmarks destroyed in the massacre but rebuilt even stronger. in his first memorial day address as commander in chief, president biden paid tribute to those lost while remembering his late son beau, a veteran who died six years ago to the day. >> we must remember the price that was paid for our liberties. we must remember the debt we owe those who have paid it, the families left behind. my heart is torn in half by the
